Calvin professor of geology emeritus Davis Young was recently awarded a prestigious geology prize. Young was the recipient of this year's Mary C. Rabbit Award from the Geological Society of America (GSA) for his work on the history of geology-particularly his 2003 book "Mind over Magma."

The award is given annually to an individual for "exceptional scholarly contributions of fundamental importance to our understanding of the history of the geological sciences."

Young was presented with the award at the 2009 GSA annual meeting in Portland. The GSA citation noted that Young, as both a conservative evangelical Christian and a geologist, "is a spokesman for our science with a unique authority."

Young taught in Calvin's geology, geography and environmental studies department for 26 years, from 1978-2004.
