December 1, 2006 == MEDIA ADVISORY
Some 25 students from Calvin College's brand-new Prison Fellowship chapter
will take part in Angel Tree Christmas this Sunday, December 3 from 1 to 3 pm
in the college chapel with about 20 children of prisoners.
Angel Tree Christmas works by connecting parents in prison with their children
through the delivery of Christmas gifts. In most cases, local church volunteers
purchase and deliver gifts and the gospel to children in the name of their
prisoner-parent.
Each Calvin student has purchased a Christmas gift for the child of a
prisoner. On Sunday they will get a chance to give that gift and spend a
little time with the children, reading the Christmas story, decorating cookies
and ornaments and more.
Ginger Aiken, who graduated from Calvin just this past spring, is the campus
initiatives coordinator for Prison Fellowship of Michigan and took the lead in
organizing the event, one which takes place each Christmas at sites across the
country.
"There is so much joy that comes with sharing Christ's love with kids who have
a mom or dad in prison," she says.
Angel Tree Christmas see the incarcerated parent fills out an application for
their child to receive the gifts, along with a few gift requests. The Calvin
students then bought these gifts, which says Aiken, aides the prisoner in
reconciliation
efforts with their families (a tag goes on each gift with a message from the
incarcerated parent).
