A Leadership Institute for area police officers will feature a plethora of
interesting speakers for its final week-long session, including Sam Harris, the
former police chief of Benton Harbor.

That last session (the third of three) will take place December 4-8 at Calvin
and will include not only Harris, but also improv specialist Mary Jane Pories
and presidential studies guru Gleaves Whitney. Topics will range from thinking
on your feet to presidential leadership styles to lessons from the Benton
Harbor riots.

Calvin agreed to host the third GRPD Leadership Institute this fall. In
exchange members of the college staff are able to attend the sessions. Dan
Gordon, operations manager for Campus Safety, plans to attend two of the three
week-long sessions, while Bill Corner, the director of Campus Safety, plans to
drop in as he is available (Corner came to Calvin after a career with the
GRPD).

Gordon attended one week of last year's Leadership Institute and says the
experience taught him a lot. He was eager this year to take part in the two
sessions he was not able to attend last year.

"Last year," he says, "I learned about strategies to maximize our staff's
potential by providing effective leadership. "It also gave Calvin's Campus
Safety Department an opportunity to effectively network with local law
enforcement agencies. It's a great program."

In the first week of classes, held October 2-6, the Leadership Institute
attendees heard from a variety of outside speakers, including fellow police
officers, but also such leadership experts as former GVSU president Arend
Lubbers. Topics ranged from leadership ethics to communications skills for law
enforcement leaders to leadership styles.

The October 30-November 3 session was with Bill Westfall of the
Gallagher-Westfall Group, a Pennsylvania-based company that says it bridges the
gap between insurance and risk management on one side, and law enforcement and
corrections on the other side.
