On April 8 the Paul B Henry Institute for the Study of Christianity and
Politics will host Larycia Hawkins of the department of political science at
the University of Oklahoma for a talk on "The Black Church and Politics:
Implications for Sacred and Secular Life." The lecture will be held in the
Meeter Center Lecture Hall at 3:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Calvin
Multicultural Affairs and Calvin Gender Studies.
On April 19 the Henry Institute will team with the Christian Reformed Church's
Office of Social Justice and Hunger Action for a discussion with Gerald
Vandezande and Mark Vander Vennen on such hot-button issues as gay marriage and
the war in Iraq. Both Vandezande and VanderVennen are well-known activists in
Canada, bringing their unique brand of world renewal to both the religious and
the political arenas. The talk on April 19 is called "Followers of Jesus,
Doers of Justice: Can There Be Peace and Justice for All in a Polarized and
Violent World? " The seminar is open to the public and will take place at the
Calvin Theological Seminary Auditorium on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Contact Peter

Also, the Rev. Dr. Robert Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of
Churches of Christ, will speak at the eighth annual Paul B. Henry Lecture on
April 26. Edgar has headed the NCCC since January of 2000 and was a six-term
member of the U.S. House of Representatives (D-PA). He is an ordained elder in
the Methodist church and a known activist, educator and Christian. The NCCC is
billed as the leading U.S. organization in the movement for Christian unity
with 36 Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox member communions, 140,000 local
congregations and approximately 50 million congregants. That Henry Lecture
will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Gezon Auditorium.
And finally, from April 29 to May 1 the Henry Institute will host the second
biennial Symposium on Religion and Politics, to be held in Calvin's new Prince
Conference Center. Topics will include: Religion and the American Founding,
The Pope and Political Understanding, Religion and the American Presidency,
Catholic Political Thought, Religion and Politics at the State Level, Religion
and International Relations, Islam and International Politics, Evangelicalism
and Political and Social Life and more. See
