Calvin College will celebrate a variety of additions to its Knollcrest East
apartments with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, September 12 at 4:30 pm.
This summer the school closed a road that ran through the apartment complex
and built a variety of things intended to create more community for students
living in the apartments. The new amenities include:
*an amphitheater with a water feature (think Rosa Parks Circle downtown)
*a sand volleyball court which will be an ice rink in the winter
*permanent gas grills for outdoor cooking
*a variety of outdoor seating
Calvin administrators say the new additions have a philosophical foundation.
They're intended to give upperclass students (junior and seniors) more reasons
to live on campus. And why is that important?
"We feel like students gain a lot when they live on campus," says vice
president for student life Shirley Hoogstra. "But our underclass students -
the sophomores and first-year students - also benefit from interacting with the
older students."
The schedule for this afternoon is:
4:30pm - Gathering in the Plaza
4:40pm - Welcome by Shirley Hoogstra
4:45pm - Ribbon cutting by President Byker
There also will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a cook-out, sand volleyball
games, a Bible study and more going on after the official ribbon-cutting.
