    October 15, 2002 == MEDIA ADVISORY

A $25 million construction project at Calvin College will be officially
dedicated on October 25, the start of two days of celebration for the Calvin
    campus.

"Stepping East By God's Grace" is the name that has been given to a project at
Calvin that includes a 380-foot span across the East Beltline (Calvin's
Crossing), a state-of-the-art communications building (the DeVos Communication
Center) and a tranquil hospitality center (the Prince Conference Center).

On October 25 Calvin will celebrate the official completion of all three
components of the project which gives the school a significant presence on the
east side of the East Beltline (hence the "stepping east").

The day will begin with a 10 a.m. tree-planting ceremony near Calvin's Crossing
in memory of Kevin De Rose, who was killed in 1989 crossing the Beltline. At
10:30 the school will hold a Chapel service followed by an 11 a.m. or so
processional from the Chapel to the DeVos Communication Center and the Prince
Conference Center. At about 11:15 a.m. there will be short (15 minutes)
services of dedication for the DeVos and Prince centers. And from approximately
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. there will be lunch served in the Prince Conference
Center and on the Commons Lawn.

The afternoon, and most of the day on Saturday, will see a wide variety of
lectures, reunions, workshops and more, primarily for the communication arts and
sciences department and the political science department (the two academic
departments housed in the DeVos Center).

For instance, on Friday, October 25, from 1:30-2:45 p.m., the communication
department will host a panel discussion called "Christians in Hollywood" with
writer/producer David McFadzean (of Home Improvement fame) and producer Ken
Wales (Christy) to be moderated by Calvin professor Quentin Schultze. Meanwhile
on Saturday, October 26, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., the political science department
will host a faculty panel discussion on the November elections and from 11 a.m.
to noon will host a talk on the role of the United States in world politics.
