Middle East Awareness Events at Calvin, Aquinas

    Calvin College will host a forum on "Perceptions of Arab Americans, American
    Muslims and Middle East Issues" on Friday October 11 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. as
    part of its Racism Awareness Week activities.

    The event will be held in room 010 of the Calvin Science Building Room and will
    be split into two sections. The first will be a lecture from 4:30-5:30 p.m. by
    Ali Abunimah, co-founder of the Electronic Intifada Website (see
    http://electronicintifada.net/new.shtml), on "U. S. Media Coverage of Middle
    East Events." The talk will be sponsored by the Calvin history and political
    science departments, the Calvin President's office and the student-run Social
    Justice Committee.

    From 5:30-6:30 p.m. there will be a panel discussion, featuring local Arab
    Americans, called "On Being Arab in America in 2001-2002." Speakers will
    include: Karen Henry, a second-generation Arab-American, a Christian and an
    expert on anti-Arab discrimination and stereotyping; Basel Shatara, a
    Palestinian, a Christian and co-owner of Pita Houses in Grand Rapids; Ali
    Metwalli, an Egyptian, a Muslim American and a professor at Western Michigan
    University who also is a member of the Grand Rapids Islamic Center Board; and
    Qais Anani, a Palestinian, a Muslim and President of the Arab American
    Association of West Michigan.

    That discussion is sponsored by the Social Justice Committee at Calvin.

    On Saturday, October 12 there will be an event at Aquinas College called
    "Teach-in! What You Haven't Heard About Palestine, Israel, Iraq and U. S.
    Foreign Policy." Participants will include: Ali Abunimeh (Electronic Intifada),
    Rachel Persico (University of Michigan), Kathy Kelly (Voices in the Wilderness),
    Jim Goode (GVSU), Bert de Vries (Calvin) and David Sole (International
    A.N.S.W.E.R.). It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (with registration at
    8:30 a.m.) at the Aquinas College Jarecki Center on Woodward SE between Fulton
    St and Robinson Rd.
