Calvin history professor Doug Howard will be teaching a graduate workshop
titled "Islam and Politics in the Twentieth Century" from July 8-12.

An expert on the middle east, Howard will help his students understand the
relationship between religion and politics in the Islamic world in the 20th
century, the role of European and North American nations in shaping this
relationship and the development of Western attitudes toward Islam.

The course begins with an introduction to the Islamic religion, including a
summary of the history of the rise of Islam and an examination of the basic
tenets of the Islamic faith, as understood in the 20th century. The topics
covered will include the Prophet Muhammad, the Qur'an and the spread of Islam.
The course then will look at case studies of the relationship between Islam and
politics, including Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan and Palestine. The case
studies also will allow an examination of American and European political
relations with these Islamic states. Finally the course will examine the
history of Western, Christian attitudes toward Islam.
