All-MIAA Honors Announced For Indoor Track and Field / Swimming and Diving

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Two members of the Calvin women's indoor track & field team were named All-MIAA selections. The Knights won four events at the 2018 MIAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Trine.
"It was impressive to see Katie and Erin win two events a piece," said head coach Bret Otte. "It is hard to do, especially in a very tough field. It was great to see their progression and their determination to improve."
Katie Diekema - A junior from Kenmore, Washington, Diekema is claiming indoor All-MIAA honors for the second-straight year. She won the 1-mile run with a time of 5:05.03 and took the gold medal in the 3000-meter run at 10:19.16. For her performance, Diekema was named the MIAA Most Valuable Runner.
Erin Van Lenten - A junior from Hawthorne, New Jersey, Van Lenten is earning All-MIAA indoor honors for the first time in her career. She opened the championships with a first-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, six inches. In the long jump, she finished in third place at 17 feet, six inches. Her second victory of the day came in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.37.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's indoor track & field team had eight athletes named to the MIAA men's indoor track & field All-MIAA team for their performance at the MIAA Championships on Saturday. Calvin won with 173.5 points to claim the second-straight MIAA indoor title.
"I am really happy for these guys," said head coach Bret Otte. "Again, it is a matter of determination to excel and to improve, even when you do not feel like it. It is fantastic to watch people achieve and even more so at a conference meet."
Noah Buteyn - A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Buteyn is claiming All-MIAA indoor honors for the first time in his career. He was a member of the 4x400-meter relay that won with a time of 3:22.72.
Mark DeJong - A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, DeJong is claiming All-MIAA accolades for the second-straight year. DeJong was the MIAA champion in the 1-mile run, crossing the finish line at 4:23.11, claiming the title for the second-straight year.
James Jeninga - A junior from Brookfield, Wisconsin, Jeninga is an All-MIAA honoree for the second-straight year. He was a member of the 4x400-meter relay that won with a time of 3:22.72.
Luke Peterson - A junior from Holland, Michigan, Peterson is claiming All-MIAA honors for the third-straight year. He was a member of the 4x400-meter relay that won with a time of 3:22.72.
Andrew Philipose - A senior from Mount Prospect, Illinois, is claiming All-MIAA indoor honors for the second time in his career. Philipose won the 5000-meter race with a time of 15:12.27.
Ethan Valentine - A senior from Mason, Ohio, has been named an All-MIAA selection all three years of indoor track & field competition. He claimed the MIAA title in the 400-meter dash for the third-straight year with a time of 49.10. He also finished third in the 200-meter dash at 22.74. Valentine was a member of the 4x400-meter relay that won with a time of 3:22.72.
Brendan VanHouten - A junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, VanHouten is claiming All-MIAA indoor honors for the first time. He earned the MIAA crown in the weight throw with a throw of 54 feet, three inches. He also placed fourth in the shot put at 46 feet, one inch.
Jonathan Walt - A sophomore from Hudsonville, Michigan, Walt is claiming All-MIAA indoor honors for the second-straight year. He repeated as the MIAA champion at the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, four inches.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team had 10 athletes claim All-MIAA accolades on Wednesday afternoon. Calvin won its 14th -straight MIAA title on Saturday at the Venema Aquatic Center with 929 points, 184 points ahead of Hope in second place. The previous school record was nine selections in 2006.
Sarah Bradley - A senior from Wheaton, Illinois, Bradley is earning All-MIAA honors for the third-straight year. Bradley claimed the MIAA title on the 1-meter boards with a score of 453.60 points. She finished her MIAA diving career with three titles.
Hannah Chao - A freshman from Farmington Hills, Michigan, Chao is claiming her first-ever All-MIAA honor. Chao led off the 200-yard medley relay that finished first on Friday evening. She also finished third in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:09.98, third in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.31 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:06.33.
Libby Engle - A sophomore from Troy, Michigan, Engle is picking up her first All-MIAA selection. Engle was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle and the MIAA and Calvin school record-breaking 800-yard freestyle relays at the MIAA Championships. She also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.38, fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.63 and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:11.70.
Emily Gunderson - A sophomore from Ann Arbor, Michigan, has claimed All-MIAA honors for the second time in her career at Calvin. She was the leadoff swimmer in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that broke the school and MIAA record. Gunderson also clocked in a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.79, finished in third in the 100-yard butterfly at 57.78 and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.44.
Rachel Mattson - A senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mattson is on the All-MIAA team for the third-straight year. She was a member of three MIAA champion relays, in the 200-yard medley relay and in the 400-yard freestyle relay. She also swam the record leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay that broke the MIAA and school record. She earned fourth-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.48) and in the50-yard freestyle at 24.03. She also touched the wall at 53.01 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish fifth.
Kendall Murphy - A junior from Modesto, California, is claiming an All-MIAA title for the second time in her career. Murphy recorded a second-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle at 17:44.83. She also grabbed the bronze medal in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:06.60 and a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:54.98.
Anna Serino - A junior from Pinckney, Michigan, Serino is grabbing All-MIAA honors for the third-straight year. Serino helped close the championship meet with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. She also swam the second leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay that smashed the MIAA and Calvin record. Serino grabbed a trio of silver medals at the MIAA championships in the 400-yard medley relay, the 500-yard freestyle at 5:04.75 and the 200-yard freestyle at 1:51.55. She also took home a bronze medal for her performance in the 1650-yard freestyle at 17:51.18.
Madelyn Smith - A junior from Allegan, Michigan, is being named to the All-MIAA team for the second-straight year. Smith started off the MIAA record-breaking 800-yard freestyle relay at the MIAA Championships and also was the third swimmer in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, that also broke the MIAA record. She also finished in third place in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.36. Smith also recorded fourth-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.30) and 100-yard freestyle at 52.51.
Abby Van Harn - A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Van Harn is claiming All-MIAA honors for the fourth-straight year. Van Harn had a stellar performance at the MIAA Championships, where she claimed the Most Valuable Swimmer honors for the second-straight year with three individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.35), 100-yard freestyle (50.04). She also swam in victorious relays in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.79) and was on four victorious relay teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay and in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay broke the MIAA and school records. Individually, she broke the MIAA and school record in the 100-yard freestyle and the MIAA 50-yard freestyle record. Van Harn finished her Calvin career with 22 first-place medals, with 10 individual titles and 12 relay titles.
Abbey Wellman - A sophomore from Crown Point, Indiana, is an All-MIAA selection for the first time in her career. Wellman led off the 400-yard medley relay that placed second at 3:55.07. She was also the bronze medalist in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:05.93. The Calvin sophomore finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.78 and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:13.02.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving program collected eight All-MIAA selections on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights are coming off a first-place finish at the MIAA Championships, where they claimed the title over Albion with a victory in the final event of the four-day meet. Calvin and Albion tied for the most All-MIAA selections with both schools collecting eight.
Jared Britton - A junior from Falls Church, Virginia, Britton is making his third appearance on the All-MIAA team. Britton was a member of three winning relays at the MIAA Championships, including the 400-yard freestyle relay that clinched the MIAA title on Saturday evening. He also picked up a trio of silver medals in the 50-yard freestyle (20.76), the 100-yard butterfly (49.29) and in the 100-yard freestyle (46.04).
Fear Churchwell - A sophomore from Athens, Georgia, is claiming All-MIAA accolades for the first time in his career. Churchwell earned a bronze medal in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.13. He also finished fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:05.36) and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.83).
Skyler Fish - A junior from Ionia, Michigan, Fish is claiming All-MIAA honors for the third time in his career. Fish was the MIAA champion in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.70. He also recorded a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 50.48 and a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.12. Fish was a member of two winning relays, including the 400-yard freestyle relay that clinched the MIAA title for Calvin.
Ben Holstege - A junior from Keswick, Virginia, earned the honor of MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer, after recording three victories at the MIAA Championships. He is claiming All-MIAA honors for the third-straight year. Holstege won MIAA title in the 50-yard freestyle (20.64), the 100-yard backstroke (48.99) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.84). He also helped the Maroon and Gold win victories in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Julian Iturbe - A freshman from Caracas, Venezuela, Iturbe is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time at Calvin. Iturbe claimed individual MIAA titles in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:40.61 and the 500-yard freestyle at 4:31.87. He was also on four winning MIAA relays, including the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay that out-touched Albion to win the MIAA title. The Calvin freshman also picked up points for the Knights with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:06.87.
Michael Moentmann - A senior from Solon, Ohio, Moentmann is earning All-MIAA honors for the first time in his career. Moentmann claimed the title of the MIAA 3-meter diving champion on Saturday evening. He blew away the competition with 513.85 points, tying the meet, heading into the final event. He also finished in second place on the 1-meter boards at 460.20 points.
Tim Randall - A sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Randall is back on the All-MIAA for the second-straight season. Randall was the third leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay that opened the championships with a victory. He grabbed the silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:38.04 and the bronze medal in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:41.90. Randall also clocked in at 47.24 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish sixth.
Tanner Vincent - A senior from Novi, Michigan, Vincent is collecting All-MIAA honors for the fourth-straight season. Vincent won three events for Calvin at the MIAA Championships. He won the 200-yard individual medley at 1:51.96 and the 400-yard individual medley at 4:01.96. Vincent also picked up a big victory for Calvin in the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday night at 1:51.98. He also swam the second leg of the 400-yard medley relay that won with a time of 3:20.28.
