Swimming and Diving Teams Take Two From Kalamazoo;
Track and Field Teams Compete at Weekend Invitationals
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 154, Kalamazoo 88

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 12-ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team downed the Hornets of Kalamazoo, 154-88. The victory moves Calvin to 4-0 against MIAA competition and 8-3 overall. The Knights won nine of the 13 events on Saturday.
"Today was a very productive day," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We were able to give some of our top athletes a day off while training at home and we were able to give some more opportunities for some of our depth to score points and have some meaningful roles. The team was strong all day long and won many close races. I feel that we are starting to turn the corner positivity towards championship season."
The day started with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), sophomore Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) won with a time of 4:10.61.
Freshman Laura Barbachyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:42.17.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Libby Engle won with a time of 2:00.24.
Hannah Chao led a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Chao won with a time of 25.56. Jenna Oezer placed second at 26.36. Chao also won the 100-yard freestyle at 56.11.
Sophomore Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) sank the Hornets in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:22.55. Freshman Audrey McFarland (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) was in second place at 2:23.67 and junior Kara Komerak (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central) finished in third place at 2:28.38.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) had a successful Saturday on the 1-meter board with 272.65 points in first place.
Sophomore Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led a Calvin sweep in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.87. Emily Slenk secured a second-place finish at 1:06.04 and sophomore Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) finished third at 1:06.50.
The Knights closed the pool with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), junior Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego), Sydney Boyer and Libby Engle won with a time of 1:43.54.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday for senior day against arch-rival Hope.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 131, Kalamazoo 106

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 25 ranked Calvin men's swimming & diving team clipped the Hornets of Kalamazoo on Saturday, 131-106. The win moves Calvin to 3-1 on the year in MIAA competition. The Knights won seven of the 13 events on Saturday.

The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), freshman Lucas Holcombe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman) won at 3:35.67.
Sophomore Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) kept the winning streak alive in the 1000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:30.81.
In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a victory at 1:47.01.
The winning ways continued in the 50-yard freestyle, where Ben Holstege touched the wall first at 21.47.
Julian Iturbe hopped on the victory streak in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:00.14. He also took the 100-yard freestyle crown on Saturday with a time of 48.54.

SATURDAY RECAP

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Calvin men's track & field team competed in a field of NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA competition on Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Meet. The Knights finished in 10th place with 16 points.
"We really had some solid performances today," said head coach Bret Otte. "I was really impressed with some of our performances today. I am excited to build off today and head into next week."
Senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 400-meter dash at 50.33 in 16th place.
Senior Nate Veldboom (East Jordan, Mich./Ellsworth) crossed the finish line at 2:04.44 in the 800-meter run in 41st place.
In the 1-mile run, freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clocked in at 4:29.66 in 25th place.
Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Ill./John Hersey) scored points for Calvin in the 3000-meter run in third place at 8:28.50. The 14th-fastest time in NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Jason Klaassen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) led a pack of Knights in the 5000-meter run in 21st place at 16:15.32.
In 17th place in the pole vault was sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), clearing 13-11 ¼ feet.
Junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Calif./Arrowhead Christian) had a leap of 21-4 ¼ feet in the long jump on Saturday to finish in fourth place. He recorded his second fourth-place finish of the day in the triple jump at 42-1 1.2 feet.
In the shot put, junior Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the Calvin pack in 18th place with a throw of 42-11 feet. VanHouten had the longest Calvin throw in the weight throw in 14th place at 50-9 ½ feet.
The Knights return to action on Friday at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas.

FRIDAY RECAP

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team had Andrew Huston and Christopher Visser participate in the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza on Friday afternoon. The Knights competed in a field filled with NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA schools.
"I thought that the guys did well today," said head coach Bret Otte. "They went up against some really good competition today and we look to build off this performance."
Sophomore Andrew Huston (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) placed seventh in the heptathlon with 548 points. In eighth place was sophomore Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) with 500 points.
In the long jump, Visser placed eighth at 5.27 meters. In ninth place was Huston at 4.96 meters.
Andrew Huston clocked in at 8.04 in the 60-meter dash in seventh place. Christopher Visser finished eighth at 8.21.
The shot put saw Visser place seventh with a throw of 10.84 meters. Huston placed ninth at 8.51 meters.
Andrew Huston finished in eighth place at the high jump at 1.53 meters.

Junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) placed 10th in the 1-mile run at 4:55.52. The third-fastest time in NCAA Division III.
Freshman Annie Needs (Peru, Ill./Saint Bede Academy) clocked at 11:14.48 in 38th place in the 3000-meter run.
In the 5000-meter run, sophomore Jena Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) placed 32nd at 21:01.13.
The highest Calvin-finish of the day came from senior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) in the 60-meter hurdle. Dyksen crossed the finish line at 8.94 to take third place. The time is the fifth-fastest in NCAA Division III.
The pole vault saw junior Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) finish in 23rd place at 8-11 ¾.
The Knights return to action on Friday at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas.

FRIDAY RECAP

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Erin Van Lenten participated in four events at the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational on Friday afternoon. Van Lenten competed in a field filled with NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NAIA and Canadian schools.
A junior from Hawthorne, New Jersey, Van Lenten placed ninth in the pentathlon at 3006 points.
"I thought that Erin did a good job today," said head coach Bret Otte. "She went up against some really good competition today."
In the 60-meter hurdles, she placed 10th at 9.64.
She cleared 1.54 meters on the high jump.
Van Lenten placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 8.70 meters.
In the long jump, she finished ninth in the long jump at 4.89 meters.
Her highest finish of the day came in the 800-meter run in sixth place at 2:39.07.
