Swimming and Diving Teams Conclude Busy Dual Meet Weekends
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
SATURDAY RECAP
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team posted two victories on Saturday with a split squad in Michigan and Indiana. The No. 13-ranked Knights traveled to Franklin, where they fell to the host Grizzlies, 157-140. The Maroon and Gold downed DePauw 186-113. Calvin won seven of the 16 events in Indiana. The Knights also picked up a home MIAA victory over Alma, 145-80.
"We split up trying to get everyone the races that they needed," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "The team that stayed at Calvin was very enthusiastic, which made me very proud. We came to Indiana for some tough racing during a tough month to race and I feel that we came away battle tested and got some valuable racing that we will use to sharpen our skills. Not all of the races went our way and I am fine with that because of the way we raced."
In Indiana, junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:57.40. She also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:17.21.
Freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) also notched a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:12.07. She finished the day with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley.
Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clinched the first victory of the day for Calvin in the 50-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 24.32. Van Harn also won the 100-yard freestyle at 52.78.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) earned the victory on the 1-meter boards with a score of 244 points.
The Knights swept the 3-meter competition with a 1-2-3 finish. Bradley won with a score of 248.70, in second place was freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West) at 222.6 and freshman Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Calif./Ripon Christian) placed third at 195.20.
In the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) touched the wall first at 59.74.
The Knights closed the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Jenna Oezer, Anna Serino, senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Abby Van Harn clocked in at 1:40.64.
Against Alma, the day started with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), sophomore Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee), freshman Kiara Bromley (Manistee, Mich./Manistee) and freshman Lydia Ward (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) won at 1:56.90.
Senior Rachel Kehren (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) won the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:53.99.
In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Audrey Brinks (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won with a time of 2:07.95. Brinks also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:56.16.
Emily Gunderson was the fastest swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.24. She also won the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.15.
Freshman Stephany Morrow (Eagle Lake, Minn./Mankato East) held off the Scots in the diving well, winning the 1-meter event with 216.50 points and the 3-meter with 196.35 points.
Anna Kutschke claimed the title in the 100-yard freestyle at 56.25.
The Knights closed the day with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Audrey Brinks, Lydia Ward, senior Rachel Alexander (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Rachel Kehren won at 1:48.78, almost 11 seconds faster than Alma.
The Maroon and Gold return to action on Saturday at Kalamazoo.
FRIDAY RECAP
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The No. 13 ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving sank the Fightin' Engineers of Rose Hulman on Friday night, winning 14 of the 16 events. With the victory, Calvin improves to 5-2 on the season.
The Knights opened the evening winning the first nine events.
The Maroon and Gold recorded the two fastest times in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) won with a time of 1:52.85.
Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) had a successful swim in the 1000-meter freestyle, winning at 11:04.86.
Calvin recorded a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Leading the pack was senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) at 1:56.98. In second place was junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) at 1:59.46 and Alyssa Oezer in third place at 2:03.82.
The Knights swept the 100-yard backstroke on Friday night. Hannah Chao won the event at 1:00.31, with sophomore Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) placing second at 1:03.32. In third place was junior Daniella Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) at 1:04.06 and sophomore Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) secured a fourth-place finish at 1:05.84.
Rachel Mattson touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:12.83.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Kendall Murphy won with a time of 2:19.70. Freshman Audrey McFarland (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) finished in second place at 2:28.38 and freshman Laura Barbachyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) in third place at 2:36.57.
The four-fastest times in the 50-yard freestyle came from Calvin on Friday. Abby Van Harn had a winning time of 24.56. In second place was junior Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) at 25.98, in third place was freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) rounded up the pack at 26.40.
The Knights brought out the brooms in the 100-yard freestyle. The sweep started with Abby Van Harn at 53.11. Sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) secured a second-place finish at 55.59 and Hannah Chao clocked in a time of 55.98. Rachel Mattson secured the sweep at 56.85.
The 200-yard backstroke was all Calvin; Anna Serino secured the victory at 2:16.16. Abbey Wellman swam a second-place swim of 2:18.81, with Emily Slenk taking the bronze at 2:21.65. Sydney Boyer finished the sweep at 2:22.12.
The Maroon and Gold secured the three-fastest times in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday. Kendall Murphy earned her second victory of the evening at 5:23.50. In second place was Madelyn Smith at 5:27.79 and freshman Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) in third place at 5:38.
The Knights owned the diving boards on Friday. Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) won the 1-meter event at 288.45 and the 3-meter at 312.30. Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West) placed second in both events.
Jenna Oezer was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:00.67.
The fastest team in the 400-yard freestyle relay was an exhibition team from Calvin. The team of Madelyn Smith, Anna Serino, Rachel Mattson and Abby Van Harn finished at 3:41.37.
The Knights return to action on Saturday in split action. The Knights host Alma College and travel to Franklin to face Franklin and DePauw.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team recorded two victories with a split squad on Saturday. At home, the Knights defeated Alma, 149-42, winning all 11 events. In Indiana, the Knights were in a tri-meet with No. 18 DePauw and host Franklin. Calvin fell to DePauw 160-134 and defeated Franklin, 174-124. At Franklin, the Knights won seven of the 16 events.

Sophomore Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) notched a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:31.37. He also won the 500-yard freestyle at 5:12.65.
In the 300-yard freestyle, sophomore Luke Herman (Waterford, Wis./Burlington) won with a time of 1:54.88.
Junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) had a successful 50-yard freestyle, winning at 22.05. He also won the 100-yard freestyle at 48.51 and the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:02.95.
Steven Tarske kept the winning wave going in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:09.61.
Luke Herman touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly at 57.76.
Colin Murphy backed his way into a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.16.
Calvin closed the afternoon with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of freshman Sam Norman (Fulton, Ill./Fulton), Luke Herman, sophomore James Kempa (Granger, Ind./Penn) and Colin Murphy won at 1:31.83.
At Franklin, the first Calvin victory came in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) finished at 1:35.17.
Freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:45.86. He also had a second-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:49.42 and 400-yard individual medley at 4:21.22.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Ben Holstege touched the wall first at 51.94. He also earned the victory in the 100-yard freestyle at 47.09
Senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:59.16.
The Knights had a 1-2 punch on the 3-meter board. Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) led the pack at 286.30. In second place was freshman Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) at 232.30 points. Moentmann also won the 1-meter event at 249.10
Jared Britton brought home the victory in the 100-yard butterfly at 52.67.
The Knights closed the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ben Holstege, senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern), Jacob Lensing and Jared Britton finished at 1:26.17.
The Knights return to action on Saturday at Kalamazoo.
FRIDAY RECAP
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team fell short on the road on Friday night at Rose Hulman. The Knights won 10 of the 16 events on Friday but fell to the Fightin' Engineers 152-148.
"I thought that everyone raced much better than a week ago," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Which is a good sign. The men's team lost to a very deep team. There are not many times that you get first in 10 of 16 events and don't win."
Calvin started the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) won at 1:35.38.
Freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman) notched a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle at 9:55.30.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Ben Holstege earned the victory at 52.15.

Jared Britton kept the winning ways rolling in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.83.
Ben Holstege recorded a victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.56.
The Fightin' Engineers won three-straight races, including a close race in the 500-yard freestyle where sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was edged by .09 seconds.
Jared Britton snapped the streak with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly at 52.25.
Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) won on both boards on Friday. He recorded a score of 315.23 on the 1-meter and 305.10 on the 3-meter.
The Knights closed the evening with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ben Holstege, Julian Iturbe, senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and Jared Britton won at 3:09.78.
The Knights return to action on Saturday in split action. The Knights host Alma College and travel to Franklin to face Franklin and DePauw.
