Kalamazoo 70, Calvin 69

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday night at Kalamazoo, falling at the buzzer 70-69.

Kalamazoo's Jimmy Paprocki converted a put-back as time ran to give the Hornets the victory.

Calvin (6-10 overall, 2-3 MIAA) led 37-30 at halftime and scored the first four points of the second half to build a 41-30 second half.

Kalamazoo (6-10 overall, 1-4 MIAA) responded with a 17-2 scoring run to take a 47-43 lead with Ben Reiter scoring 15 of the 17 points in the Hornet surge.

Kalamazoo maintained its lead until the final 2:07 of play as sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) drained a triple to tie the game at 64 and then converted a pair of free throws to give the Knights a 66-64 advantage with 1:41 remaining.

Reiter responded with a deep triple from the left side of the arc to put the Hornets back up 67-66 and a free throw by Paprocki gave Kalamazoo a 68-66 lead with 39 seconds remaining.

Calvin then fired up three consecutive shots that were off the mark but the Knights were able to snare the offensive rebound on all three shots. Senior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven HS) was able to corral the third offensive rebound of the series and drove to the basket, coverting a layup while being fouled with 11 seconds remaining.

Canonie swished the free throw to give the Knights a 69-68 lead setting up the final seconds of play.

Kalamazoo moved the ball up the floor on the ensuing possession and missed a contested shot from the left side of the lane with time ticking down. Paprocki was able to snare the miss and tip the ball into the net as time expired to give the Hornets the win.

DeVries led Calvin in scoring with 20 points to go with seven rebounds. Junior Austin Bykerk (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 13 points and eight boards while Canonie had 11 points, seven assists and four steals without committing a turnover.

Reiter led all scorers with 28 points as he was 10 of 13 from the floor including 6 of 7 from three-point range. Roger Hood had 14 and Paprocki 12.

Calvin shot 32.9 percent from the floor overall but did connect on 17 of 18 (.944) at the free throw line. The Knights outrebounded Kalamazoo 37-34 but the Hornets shot 51.9 percent from the floor including 52.4 percent (11 of 21) from three-point range.
