Basketball Teams Split MIAA Contests Against Adrian
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 74, Adrian 46
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team cruised to a 76-47 over MIAA rival Adrian on Wednesday evening. The win moves Calvin to 8-5 on the year and into a tie for third place in the MIAA at 3-1. With the victory, Calvin remains perfect at Van Noord Arena on the season and sends Adrian to 4-8 and 2-3 in MIAA play.
The Bulldogs came out swinging on Wednesday and started the game with a 12-5 lead. The Knights responded with a 13-3 run in the final five minutes of the first quarter. Junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) started the run with a layup. A three-point basket from senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) tied the game at 12 points. The Knights would take the lead for good with a pair of free throws from senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian). Calvin would head to the bench with an 18-15 lead.
The Maroon and Gold used a 4-0 run to push the lead up to 22-15. Adrian cut the Calvin lead to 24-20, baskets from Bre Luurtsema and sophomore Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) pushed the lead back to eight points. Junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian made a layup as time expired in the half to send Calvin to a 32-22 lead at halftime.
It was all Calvin in the third quarter, the Knights opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach. Kara Minderhoud led all players with five points in the run. A late 10-0 run in the third quarter but the Bulldogs to bed and set Calvin into the fourth quarter with a 56-33 lead.
Kara Minderhoud drained a three-point basket to start the scoring in the fourth quarter, the Calvin defense responded with a block from sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower). The Knights pushed the lead up to 29 points in the fourth quarter with a layup from junior Logan Winton (Fairview, Mich./Fairview) with 4:24 remaining. A layup from freshman Caitlyn Demaree (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) sealed the victory at 74-46.
Freshman Rebecca Boeve (Grandville, Mich./Covenant Christian) made her Calvin debut on Wednesday and finished with two rebounds and a steal. Sophomore Jordyn Schluter (Novi, Mich./Mercy) recorded her first assist and steal of the season.
Bre Luurtsema led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Kara Minderhoud chipped in 11 points, with Becca Richards tallied 10 points and junior Sarah Cassel (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) clocking in with nine points in the win.
Ali Spayde had a game-high three assists and nine points. Sophomore Ashton Bowersock (Van Wert, Ohio/Lincolnview) followed behind with a career-high two assists.
Rachel Warners rang in the new year with a block party against the Bulldogs with five blocks, eight points, six rebounds and two steals.
The Knights dominated the glass on Wednesday, outrebounded the Bulldogs, 41-24. The Maroon and Gold held a 36-16 scoring advance in the paint.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights host Alma.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Adrian 76, Calvin 67
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team opened its 2018 MIAA campaign with a 76-67 defeat at Adrian Wednesday evening at the Merillat Center.
A late surge at the end of the first half and also second half allowed Adrian to claw its way to the win over the visiting Knights.
Adrian closed out the first half on a 16-7 run to take a 39-32 halftime lead and closed out the second half with a 15-5 run to seal the win.
Calvin (4-8 overall, 0-1 MIAA) led 25-23 on a layup by sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) with 5:23 remaining and led 27-25 on a bucket by junior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma HS) with 4:40 left. Adrian (10-2 overall, 1-0 MIAA) scored the next seven points however to take a 32-27 lead and followed with a pair of layups inside the final 38 seconds of regulation to take a seven-point halftime lead.
The Knights trailed 50-41 five minutes into the second half but Calvin ripped off a 10-0 scoring run capped off by a dunk by junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) to take a 52-51 lead.
The lead then changed hands six times but the final lead change came with 4:18 left to play on a three-point play by Jordan Harris that put the Bulldogs up 64-62. Calvin had taken the lead moments before on a three-point shot by junior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS).
The three-point play by Harris however kick-started Adrian's game-ending 15-5 run as the Bulldogs remained unbeaten (5-0) at home this season.
Calvin featured a balanced scoring attack led by Amoros-Gutierrez with 14 points off the bench while Bykerk had 13 points. DeVries and senior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 12 points apiece while Walter had 11 points in a reserve role. Junior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) snared a team-high 10 rebounds.
Adrian put four players in double-figures in scoring led by Jeremy Kalonji with 20 points while Justin Webster had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Calvin shot 45.8 percent from the field. Adrian shot 55.4 percent from the floor.
Calvin will travel to Alma on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
