WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team opened the 2017 Calvin Winter Invite on Thursday evening. The Knights won one event and stand in fourth place with 144 points.
"It is an odd start to the meet with how disjointed the start was," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "With everyone starting at various times of the night. We had some people starting two hours apart in their events. All day long, we had groups going in from start to finish. I thought on the women's relay, the energy was not quite up to where it needed to be, they still performed well. I believe that our A-relay should have a time to get them into the meet. Our miles, for being eight weeks into the season, I believe we were seven of nine for best times, by chunks of 20, 30, 40 seconds."
The Knights came out flying on Thursday evening in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Knights recorded a second-place finish at 7:34.97, faster than Grand Valley, Hillsdale and Findlay of NCAA Division II. Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) started the relay for Calvin and was followed by junior Madeline Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School). Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) swam a split of 1:51.17, to push the Knights into second place.
The Calvin B-Team placed 10th and dropped 20 seconds off its time. The team of freshman Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian), sophomore Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge), junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) clocked in at 1:54.44.
In the 1650-yard freestyle, Kendall Murphy became a member of the 17-minute club, placing seventh at 17:59.42. Her time is the eighth-fastest time in school history. Robyn Ellens finished in 11th place at 18:36.50.
The Knights return to the pool on Friday morning for the second day of the three-day invitational.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team opened the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational on Thursday evening. The Knights are in fourth place with 137 points and broke one school record.
"It is an odd start to the meet with how disjointed the start was," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "With everyone starting at various times of the night. We had some people starting two hours apart in their events. All day long, we had groups going in from start to finish. Our miles, for being eight weeks into the season, I believe we were seven of nine for best times, by chunks of 20, 30, 40 seconds. In the men's relays, all of the splits were good, best 200 times by far. Ben Holstege had a really good split, who dropped a ton of time off his best. The highlight of the night individually was Jared Britton. A time trial in the 100 freestyle set a school record."

MEN'S SOCCER
A trio of Calvin College men's soccer players have been named United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Americans.
Senior Nate Van Ryn and junior Trent Vegter have been named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III All-America first team while junior Bobby McCaw has been named to the second team.
It marks just the second time in program history that Calvin has landed a trio of United Soccer Coaches All-Americans in the same year.
Vegter headlines the group as a repeat member of the United Soccer Coaches All-America first team.
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter joins his older brother Travis Vegter as a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American with the Calvin men's soccer program. Travis was a first team selection in 2014 and a second team choice in 2013. In addition, Trent Vegter continues to add to to the All-America haul within his extended family as his uncle Bill Sall was a two-time Division III All-American with the Calvin men's basketball team (1989, 1990). Trent and Travis Vegter along with uncle Bill Sall are all graduates of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School.
Also of note, Trent and Travis Vegter now join Kurt Visker (2004, 2005) as the only repeat United Soccer Coaches All-Americans in Calvin men's soccer history.
A three-year starter at centerback, Trent Vegter played a key role in helping the Calvin men's soccer team post 15 shutout victories this fall while allowing only 10 goals on the season. He also played an integral role in Calvin's offensive attack with his consistent long serves into the attacking third while also providing scoring punch himself. Vegter with four goals, 10 assists and 18 points. He scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Kalamazoo on October 21. During the season he was named a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. He was later named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year.
Van Ryn is the third goalkeeper in Calvin men's soccer history to receive United Soccer Coaches All-America accolades with Casey TerHaar (1962) and Niko Giantsopoulos (2014) also receiving the award as goalkeepers for the Maroon and Gold.
Van Ryn is from Grandville and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School. A two-year starter in goal, Van Ryn put together a superlative 2017 campaign, posting a 21-1-1 record in goal that included 15 shutout victories and a goals-against-average of 0.43. His season shutout total is the second-highest and his goals-against-average the third-best in Calvin men's soccer single-season history.
McCaw hails from Dubuque, Iowa. He is a graduate of Hempstead High School. A center forward, McCaw was Calvin's scoring leader this fall with 21 goals, six assists and 48 points. His goal total matched the fifth-highest in Calvin men's soccer history in a season while his point total matched the seventh-highest single-season total. A three-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, McCaw tallied six game-winning goals over the course of the 2017 campaign. He was later named to the All-MIAA first team.
"What an accomplishment for Calvin men's soccer," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders who has seen his players land United Soccer Coaches All-America honors 11 times in his six-year tenure as head coach of the Knights. "We talk about earning things as opposed to deserving things and these men have gone out and earned these accolades. It's a a testimony to their commitment and work rate, and even more to their teammates. These honors do not happen without their support or the success we had as a group this year. I am extremely proud of the entire group."
Calvin recently completed another standout season, winning its 11th consecutive MIAA regular season title as well as its fourth straight MIAA Tournament crown. The Knights finished 21-1-1 overall, reaching the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament for the third consecutive year while also hitting the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season.
