ANDERSON, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped a 102-92 non-conference decision at Anderson University Wednesday evening.
After trailing 53-41 at halftime, Calvin (1-5) trimmed the deficit down to three points at 77-74 on a layup by junior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS) but got no closer.
Anderson (3-1) shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first half including 10-of-15 from three-point range to build a double-digit lead at the break.
Calvin went on a 16-8 run capped off by the layup by Amoros-Gutierrez to cut the lead down to three with 9:45 remaining.
The Knights were able to get a defensive stop on the ensuing possession but could not convert on their end. Calvin got no closer the rest of the way but trailed by just five at 84-79 after a layup by junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) with 6:06 remaining.
Anderson sealed the win down the stretch however by converting 4 of 5 field goal attempts and seven free throw tries inside the final 5:53 of the game.
Calvin was led by senior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) who popped in a career-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting including 5-of-6 from three-point territory. Bykerk and freshman Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) had 14 points apiece while Amoros-Gutierrez matched a career-high with 12 points.
Stanley Duncan led Anderson with 40 points including seven three-point baskets.
Anderson was 12-of-24 from three-point range and 30-of-38 (.789) from the free throw line. The Ravens also shot 61.2 percent from the field overall.
Calvin shot 55.4 percent from the field overall and hit 10-of-24 (.417) of its three-point attempts but was just 10-of-19 (.526) from the free throw line.
Calvin held a 32-24 rebounding advantage with Bykerk hauling down a team-high seven boards.
The Knights will host Martin Luther College (Mn.) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. The game will be part of a women's/men's doubleheader with the Calvin women's basketball team taking on the Martin Luther women's basketball team at 5:30 p.m.
