Women's Soccer Edged by Hope in MIAA Tournament Semifinals;
Calvin Women's Soccer Trio Receive All-MIAA Accolades

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday night at Van Andel Stadium.
Hope (17-2-1) scored the game's only goal 7:04 into the match as Grace Bubin pounced on a rebound off a free kick and tapped in a shot from close range.
Calvin (12-9-0) kept pace with the Flying Dutch the rest of the way however and pressed the attack for portions of the second half, outshooting Hope 5-1 over the final 45 minutes of play.
Calvin's best scoring chance in the second half came in the 75th minute on a corner kick by junior Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central HS). Second laters, Mouw launched a shot off a scrum in the box that was saved by Hope goalkeeper Jordanne Ellingboe.
Mouw had three of Calvin's shots in the second half. Freshman Maria Vander Lei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a pair of shots in the game including a handful of dangerous forrays into the offensive third of the field.
Hope finished the game with an overall 9-8 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) came up with three saves for Calvin while Ellingboe had two saves for Hope.

"I was very pleased with our performance," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "I could not have asked anything more from this group than what they gave tonight. We had an excellent two days of practice leading up to this game and our team followed the game plan extremely well. We gave up an early goal and we just couldn't find a way to score the equalizer. Credit Hope for gaining the win but I thought at times we had them on their heels in the second half."
Hope advances to the MIAA Tournament Championship final on Saturday with the Flying Dutch hosting Olivet in the title match at noon.
Thursday's game concluded the careers of Calvin seniors Hattie LaCroix (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS), Anica Pausma (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS), Emily VanVeldhuizen (Brookeville, Md./Washington Christian Academy), Camie Rietberg (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and Sydney Barcey (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS).
"We will miss our seniors dearly," said Recker. "They have played a key role in the success of our program over the last four years. They are valued members of this program and we are grateful for their efforts as Calvin women's soccer players, both on and off the field."
Thursday's game marked the sixth one-goal defeat Calvin has suffered this season.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team landed three All-MIAA selections on Thursday afternoon. The Knights had two All-MIAA First Team selections in Camie Rietberg and Kali Mouw. Abby Koops was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
"Being honored by the MIAA and its coaching body is special," said head coach Mark Recker. "These players are provided affirmation of all the hard work they put in during the season. Such honors are not guaranteed and thus a humble appreciation is a natural response. From a program and coaching staff, we are happy and proud of these team members for all they did for the team this season."
Camie Rietberg
A senior from Wyoming, Michigan, Rietberg is earning All-MIAA honors for the first time. Rietberg was named to the All-MIAA First Team as a midfielder. She recorded five goals in MIAA play, including three game-winning goals.
Kali Mouw
A junior from Avon, New York, Mouw is being named to the All-MIAA First Team for the first time in her career. She earned All-MIAA Second Team honors in 2016. Mouw made the All-MIAA team as a defender. Mouw helped anchor a solid Calvin defense and tallied two goals and was sixth in the MIAA in assists with five.
Abby Koops
A freshman from Holland, Michigan, Koops is earning All-MIAA Second Team honors as a forward for the first time in her career. Koops finished MIAA play with four goals and three assists.
