MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team produced a banner night of performances at the MIAA Relays Friday evening inside the Venema Aquatic Center. Friday's competition was unscored but featured all six MIAA schools that sponsor men's and women's swimming and diving.
Calvin took first in seven of a possible nine swimming events and set five MIAA Relays records in the process.
The annual MIAA Relays featured a handful of traditional relay events as well as several non-traditional relays.
Calvin opened the meet with a bang as the relay of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) took first place with an MIAA Relays record time of 1:34.98. The time surpassed the previous record of 1:35.21 set by Calvin last year. It also ranks as the eighth-fastest time this season in Division III men's swimming.
Calvin's quartet of freshman Lucas Holcombe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS), Ben Holstege, junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia HS) and freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) followed with a first place swim in the 200 backstroke relay with an MIAA Relays record time of 1:36.52. The time surpassed the previous record of 1:37.03 set by Albion last year.
Calvin's 200 breaststroke relay of sophomore Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS), sophomore Nick Pecoraro (Chicago, Il./Nazareth Academy), Lensing and Sam Holstege took first in a time of 1:52.18.
The Knights followed with a win in the 500 progressive freestyle relay with Lensing, Britton, senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) and Iturbue clocking in with an MIAA Relays record time of 4:11.75, eclipsing the previous record of 4:12.88 set by Calvin in 2015.
Calvin's 1500 freestyle relay of sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Iturbe and senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) took first in a time of 15:52.55, just missing the MIAA Relays record of 14:52.40.
In the 4x100 individual medley relay, Churchwell, Vincent, Ben Holstege and Iturbue crused to a win with an MIAA Relays record time of 3:39.49. The previous record was 3:39.85 set by Albion in 2015.
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay of Lensing, Iturbe, DeYoung and Britton won gold with an MIAA Relays record time of 1:26.22. The previous record was 1:26.97 set by Albion in 2013. Calvin's winning time currently ranks ninth in Division III men's swimming this year.
The Knights placed second in the 200 butterfly relay with a time of 1:35.85. The relay consisted of junior Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS), freshman Ryan Gelderloos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Holcombe and Britton.
Calvin also competed in the mixed 200 medley relay as the co-ed team of Ben Holstege, Lensing, freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second with a time of 1:40.81, finishing three-hundreths of a second behind the winning team from Albion.
The MIAA Relays also featured mixed diving competition. In the one-meter diving competition, Calvin helped produce two of the top three scores. Freshman Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) combined with Hope's Kyle Weck to place second on the one-meter board (194.10) while senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) and Colin Grogan of Kalamazoo took third (192.20).
On the three-meter board senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and Kevin Franz of Hope took second (228.90). Moentmann and Grogan were third with a score of 208.70).
"We came out swinging," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It's great to see early-season speed. That's something we take pride in. We had good energy, good team energy and good performances. Overall it was just a win-win night for us."
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it hosts a quadrangular with Albion, Carthage and Ohio Northern at the Venema Aquatic Center.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team came up with a strong set of performances at the annual MIAA Relays Friday night inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Calvin took first place in all three freestyle relay events while finishing third or better in the remaining six events.
Highlighting the evening was the performance of Calvin's 500 progressive relay as the team of sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS), senior Abby Van Harn, junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS) and junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) took first place with an MIAA Relays record time of 4:45.87, breaking the previous record of 4:46.34 set by Kalamazoo in 2015.
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Van Harn, Gunderson, junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) took first place in a time of 1:39.71, just missing an MIAA Relays record. The winning time also currently ranks eighth nationally in Division III women's swimming.
In the 1500 freestyle, Smith, junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) and Serino took first place with a time of 16:16.78.
Calvin's 200 butterfly relay of Gunderson, freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) and freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) was third in a time of 1:48.86. The Knights finished less than two-tenths of a second out of first place in a tight three-way finish for the lead.
In the 200 medley relay, junior Daniella Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Ca./Northgate HS), Chao, Gunderson and Van Harn were second in 1:51.43. Calvin's 200 breaststroke relay team of junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Tx./Regents School of Austin), freshman Kelly Makela (Boise, Id./Boise HS), Mattson and freshman Katie Hulst (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was third (2:16.58).

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0
ALBION, Mich. - The No. 4 ranked Calvin volleyball team improved to 23-3 on the year and 15-0 in MIAA play with a 3-0 victory at Albion on Friday night. The Knights defeated the Britons, 25-19, 25-9, 25-23. Albion falls to 14-13 and 8-7 in MIAA action.
"Tonight was a nice victory over a very tough Albion team," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "I thought we hit the ball very well tonight and we will now have to focus on a very good Trine team."
The Britons claimed the lead early in the first set. Tied at two, the Brits pushed the lead to 5-2. Calvin fought back and tied the set at six. The Purple and Gold pushed the lead back up to three at 12-9. The Knights reclaimed the lead with a 9-1 run. Calvin closed the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-19. Senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) led all players with five kills in the first set.
The serving of senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) helped the Knights jump out to a 7-1 lead in the second set. Calvin kept the pressure on the Britons and pushed the lead to 12-2. The Knights cruised to a 25-9 victory in the second set. The Knights hit .455 in the second set. Emily Blankespoor recorded four service aces in the second set, including back-to-back aces to make it 23-8.
The third set started with neither team being able to create any separation. The largest lead of the set came at 17-13 with a kill from senior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian). The Britons did not fold in the third set and cut the Calvin lead to 22-21. The Knights responded with a 3-0 run force match point. After two Briton points, Tessa Van Laare hit the final nail in the coffin with a kill at 25-23. Tessa Van Laare and junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) both notched six kills in the third set.
Anna Kamp led all players with 15 kills and hot .448 on Friday. Jenna Lodewyk hit a blistering .692 at Albion and recorded nine kills, nine digs and 26 assists. Freshman Sydney Segard Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) tallied seven kills on 11 attacks. Emily Blankespoor and junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) both had 15 digs on Friday, with Blankespoor leading the match with four service aces.
The Knights close the regular season on Saturday when they host Trine.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Adrian 2, Calvin 1
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team was edged in a hard-fought MIAA battle on Friday at Adrian, 2-1. The loss moves Calvin to 12-7 on the year and 9-6 in MIAA play.
The Knights now stand in fifth place heading into the final match of the year on Monday at Olivet.
Senior Sydney Barcey (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) scored off a long pass from senior Emily VanVeldhuisen (Brookeville, Md./Washington Christian Academy). Barcey snuck the ball past the Adrian keeper to give the Knights the lead in the 16th minute.
Adrian tied the match with 51 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a second-half corner and found the back of the net in the 76th minute for the winning goal.
Freshman Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) posted two saves on Friday.
Calvin out-shot the Bulldogs 10-4 on Friday, with freshman Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) leading the way with four shots.
The Knights close the regular season on Monday at Olivet. With the victory over Albion, the Maroon and Gold secured a spot in the MIAA Tournament and will play again on Thursday.
