WEEKEND WRAP-UP
MEN'S GOLF
Battle Creek, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf captured the MIAA Championship on Saturday, capping off its record-breaking fall season.
The Knights held an eight-stroke-lead after the first day of the MIAA Fall Tournament on Friday. On Saturday morning, the course at Battle Creek Country Club was deemed unplayable, and Calvin was declared the MIAA champion.
The championship is the third MIAA title in Calvin men's golf history, joining the titles won in 2010 and 2012. Hope had won the last four MIAA regular season titles.
As the 2017 MIAA regular season champion, Calvin will host two of the three rounds of the four-team MIAA Spring Tournament next April which determines the league's automatic qualifier to the 2018 NCAA III Championships in May.
The Knights' finish their fall season boasting an average of 290.3, setting a new MIAA men's golf record.
The standout senior duo of Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian) both had record-breaking individual seasons for Calvin. VanScoyk slated a season average 71.4, including a 71.8 average in MIAA play. Van Noord averaged 71.6 overall, also finishing with a 71.8 conference average.
The Knights were solid all season, claiming at least a share of first place in all four MIAA Jamborees. Calvin finished in second at the first day of the MIAA Fall Tournament, just two strokes behind Hope.
Van Noord and freshman Sam Holland (Novi, Mich/Detroit Catholic Central HS) both earned MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week honors. After shooting a 69 to finish first at the third MIAA Jamboree, Van Noord landed the spot on the week of October 2. The following week, Holland also fired a 69 to earn medalist honors at the fourth MIAA Jamboree.
In non-conference play, the Knights placed third at the Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament where Van Scoyk shot a team-best 71-70-141, finishing just one stroke behind medalist honors.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Elmhurst 0
Calvin 3, Ithaca 1
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 6 ranked Calvin volleyball team posted a 4-0 record at the Midwest Invitational this weekend. On Saturday, the Knights defeated Elmhurst 3-0 and Ithaca 3-1. The Maroon and Gold are now 19-3 on the year. Senior Jenna Lodewyk and junior Anna Kamp were named to the all-tournament team.
"I am pleased with how we played this weekend," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "We were challenged this weekend and the team responded positively. There were a lot positives from this weekend and we are excited to get back to work on Monday."
The serve of Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) broke open the first set. Leading 9-8, Calvin won the next seven points behind the serve of Lodewyk. The Knights closed the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-13. Calvin held Elmhurst to a -.061 hitting percentage in the first set. Jenna Lodewyk had three service aces for Calvin in the first set.
A pair of service aces from senior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) gave the Knights separation in the second set. With the set tied at 11, the Knights broke away with a 5-1 run. Leading 16-14, Calvin used a 5-0 run to close the door on the set and win 25-17.
The Knights started the third set with an 8-2 run with the serve of senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) and Kristen Vyletel. The Knights cruised the rest of the set to win 25-12.
Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) led all players on Saturday with 16 kills and 13 digs. Jenna Lodewyk had 31 assists, 10 digs and three assists. Sophomore Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) recorded three blocks against Elmhurst and junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) led Calvin with four service aces.
Calvin opened the Ithaca match with a 15-0 run. The serve of Kristen Vyletel gave the Bombers issues to open the match. Calvin easily won the set at 25-6. The six points is the second fewest points Calvin has given up in a set this year. Calvin only allowed five points against Kalamazoo.
The Bombers took an early 5-3 lead in the second set. The Knights rode the serve of Kristen Vyletel again to take the lead back at 8-5. Ithaca rallied from a five point deficit to take the lead back at 20-18 and took the set at 25-21.
Ithaca rode the momentum of the second set victory into the third set and pushed the lead to 13-8. The Knights responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 14. The Bombers extended the lead to 22-18 before Calvin would catch fire and close the set on a 7-1 run. Sarah DeVries had two kills in the run.
Leading the fourth set 7-5, Calvin broke the set open with a 5-1 run. The Knights cruised in the fourth and closed the set on a 4-1 run, to win the set 25-14.
Tessa Van Laare led all players with 13 kills on Saturday, hitting .370 against the Bombers. Sarah DeVries was a force at the net with a career-high nine blocks and 12 kills. Jenna Lodewyk led the match with 35 assists and 15 digs.
The Knights posted a season-high 13 blocks on Saturday.
Calvin finished the Midwest Invitational as the only undefeated team. Calvin led the tournament in blocks with 31, service aces with 39 and held opponents to a .083 hitting percentage.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday against Alma.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Adrian 1
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 5-1 victory at Adrian College Saturday evening.
Ranked No. 1 nationally, Calvin improves to 13-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the MIAA. The Knights are 11 points clear of second place Adrian with four league match-days left on the regular season schedule.
The victory came nearly a year after Calvin had suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Bulldogs at Adrian's Docking Stadium.
Calvin led 2-0 at halftime and received a hat-trick performance from freshman Schaeffer Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) and outshot Adrian (6-5-2 overall, 5-3-2 MIAA) 20-12.
The Knights took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 9:19 into the match with senior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) collecting an assist on the play.
Smith then scored his first goal of the night off a feed from sophomore Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with six minutes left in the first half.
Adrian's Brandon Katona scored in the 52nd minute to slice the Calvin deficit in half but sophomore Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) lashed a shot into the left hand corner of the net from in the 59th minute to allow the Knights to regain a two-goal advantage.
Smith scored unassisted in the 65th minute and completed the hat-trick with a goal in the 73rd minute on another feed from Adams to close out the scoring.
Calvin senior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) chalked up six saves in posting his 13th victory of the year in nets.
"It was a great team win tonight at a really tough road venue," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "We've traditionally struggled at Adrian. It's a difficult place to play so to come in and get a result was huge. Our guys moved the ball well and for the most part, defended really well. We're excited to be back at home Tuesday night to take on a committed Alma side."
Calvin's home match against Alma on Tuesday night at Zuidema Field is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Alma 3, Calvin 2
Alma, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team fell to Alma, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard. A late Alma goal in the competitive contest lifted the home team to victory.
In the first meeting of the season between the two teams, the Knights claimed a 4-0 win.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the MIAA. Alma improves to 3-9-2 overall.
The Knights came out strong, logging five shots on goal in the first six minutes of play. Despite the early pressure from Calvin, the Scots got on the board first when Amanda Mladenovski scored from 35 yards out.
Calvin knotted the score before halftime as freshman Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central) capitalized in the 41st minute off a scrum in front of the net.
At the halftime break, the Knights held a 9-5 shots advantage.
The Knights took the lead in the 66th minute, as senior Emily VanVeldhuisen (Brookeville, Md./Washington Christian Academy) converted on a penalty kick opportunity. Calvin's advantage was short-lived, as Alma's Whitnee Foote tied the game two minutes later.
Alma's Mladenovski scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
Final shots were 15-11 in favor of Calvin. Mouw led the Knights with six shots, including two shots on goal.
The Knights are back in action on Wednesday when they host rival Hope College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
ELSAH, Il. - The 10th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team received a preview of the NCAA III Championships competition course on Saturday as it competed at the Principia College Cowbell Classic. Principia will host the NCAA III Championships on November 18.
Competing in a loaded field of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin took ninth with a team score of 257 points.
Calvin was led by senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) who finished 21st on the 8K course in a time of 25:35.
Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) also ran in his home state on Saturday and responded by placing 37th individually with a time of 25:54.
Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 65th (26:16) and junior Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) 70th in 26:17.
Senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was 74th in 26:21 with freshman teammate Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) right behind in 75th (26:21).
Sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korean/Seoul Foreign School) rounded out Calvin's top seven by placing 78th in 26:59.
Top-ranked North Central won Saturday's competition with a team score of 47 points. Isaac Cassani-Garcia was the individual race winner with a time of 24:41.
Calvin will now break until October 28 when it competes at the MIAA Championships hosted by Adrian College.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
ELSAH, Il. - The 15th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team received a preview of the NCAA III Championships competition course on Saturday as it competed at the Principia College Cowbell Classic. Principia will host the NCAA III Championships on November 18.
Competing in a field of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin took 16th with a team score of 433 points.
Sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's top finisher, placing 65th on the 6K course in 23:20.
Senior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) was 77th in 23:29 followed by sophomore Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) in 84th (23:40).
Senior Kate McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) was 86th (23:41). Junior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 155th (24:42).
Junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was 159th (24:46) and sophomore Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 164th in 24:53 to round out Calvin's top seven.
Top-ranked Johns Hopkins won Saturday's team competition with a score of 74 points.
Taryn Cordani won Saturday's race individually with a time of 20:45.
Calvin will now break until October 28 when it competes at the MIAA Championships hosted by Adrian College.
