CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 11, 2017

Men's Soccer Ties Hope in Rivalry Contest;
Volleyball Rolls to Win at Saint Mary's

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Hope 1 (2 OT)

HOLLAND, Mich. - The top-ranked Calvin men's soccer team find itself in a fight Wednesday evening at rival Hope and came away from Van Andel Stadium with a 1-1 double-overtime draw.

The tie is the first point taken from Calvin in a game this year as the Knights are now 12-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin remains eight points clear of second place Adrian. The Knights will travel to Adrian Saturday night for a 7 p.m. match.

Calvin struck first in its rivalry match with Hope Wednesday. The Knights scored 4:36 into the match as senior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) sent a ball into the box off a short corner. The cross into the box deflected off the leg of a Hope defender and into the net for an own goal.

Calvin maintained its lead until the 69th minute when Hope was awarded a free kick from the center of the field 30 yards from the goal after a foul. Hope's James Reymann responded with a curling free kick that bent over the Calvin wall and into the top right hand corner to tie the score 1-1.

The Knights pressed the attack in the closing minutes of regulation but came up empty despite receiving a pair of corner kicks in the 90th minute.

Hope came up with a pair of quality scoring chances in the first overtime with a shot by Devon Butler saved by Calvin goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and a subsequent shot by Christian Dault sailing wide.

Both teams had scoring chances in the second overtime with Calvin outshooting Hope 4-3 over the final 10 minutes but neither side could find the back of the net.

"First off I want to to give Hope a lot of credit," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "They came out, they fought and they knew what they wanted. They dictated the pace for parts of the game and created some dangerous opportunities. They certainly deserved the result tonight. On our behalf I don't think we really played great. I don't want to say that we didn't want it tonight but I just didn't think the fight or the edge was there until Hope tied it with the free kick goal. After that I thought we responded with more desire and energy. I think we come out of here with kind of a 'blah' taste in our mouth about what mind have been."
Calvin finished the game with a 21-18 shots at goal advantage. Van Ryn had nine saves for Calvin in goal. Blair McCormick recorded seven saves in goal for Hope.

Wednesday's game was the 104th meeting between the two rivals in men's soccer. Calvin leads the all-time series 58-34-12.

With the first set tied at three, the Knights got some separation with a 7-1 run. The Calvin serve created issues for the Belles offense on Wednesday. A pair of service aces from senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) forced the Belles to call a timeout at the 19-12 mark. A kill from junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) finished the set at 25-15.
The Knights jumped out to a hot start in the second set. The serve of Emily Blankespoor and junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) propelled Calvin to a 7-2 lead. Leading 8-4, the Knights rode a 5-1 run to push the lead to 13-5. The Belles would cut the Calvin lead to four points, but that is as close as they would get. Sophomore Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) closed the set with a kill at 25-18.
The Belles would not go away and took an early 5-2 lead in the third set. The Knight would take the next three points, with two kills from Anna Kamp, to tie the set at five.
