ANGOLA, Ind. - The Knights won their 31st-straight road match with a 3-1 victory at Trine on Tuesday evening. The Knights improve to 12-3 on the year and Trine falls to 8-7 in 2017. The 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-12 victory pushes Calvin to 36-0 all-time against Trine.
"There is never an easy night in the MIAA," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "I thought that Trine played a really good match. There are some things that we are continuing to learn and building on. I am really pleased with the grit we showed tonight."
At the halfway point of the MIAA season, the Knights stand alone at the top of the standings with an unblemished record of 8-0. The Knights are a game ahead of No. 25 Hope at 7-1. Trine is now tied for third place at 4-4.
The two teams started the first set with neither team creating much separation. The Knights broke the set open with a 4-0 run behind the serve of sophomore Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian). The Knights closed the set at 25-17 with a service ace from senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian).
The Thunder block was successful in the second set and helped Trine hold the lead for a majority of the set. Trailing 17-12, the Knights would close the gap to 20-19. The Thunder tied the match at one with a 25-23 victory.
A pair of kills from sophomore Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) got the ball rolling for the Knights in the third set. With the set tied at four, a service error would give the Knights the lead for good. The largest lead of the set came at 21-15, after a service ace from junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian); freshman Sydney Segard (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) threw the ball down for a kill. Trine would cut the lead to 24-23, but the serve of Lindsey DeCamp went long and the Knights took the set, 25-23.
The Maroon and Gold cruised in the fourth set and hit a blistering .625 in the fourth set. The serve of junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) gave the Thunder issues in the beginning of the fourth set and the Knights jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Leading 10-5, Calvin rode a 7-1 run to put the set away. An Anna Kamp kill ended the match at 25-12.
Sarah DeVries led all players with 15 kills. Senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) was an issue for the Trine defense with seven kills and hitting. 500 on Tuesday, she also had a match-high 38 assists and career-high three blocks. Sydney Segard notched a career-high five kills at Trine. Emily Blankespoor finished with a match-high three service aces. Ally Fea tallied four blocks and Anna Kamp led the Knights with 10 digs.
