MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 8, Olivet 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin treated a large Calvin Homecoming crowd to an 8-0 victory over the visiting Comets of Olivet Saturday evening at Zuidema Field.
Calvin led 2-0 at halftime and popped in six more goals in the second half. Eight different Calvin players scored goals on Saturday.
Scoring goals for Calvin Saturday night were senior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS), juniors Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS), Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) and Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) and Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Shaeffer Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS).
Junior Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had three assists on the evening. Hinds Witte and freshman Jack Lee (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) all had single assists on the evening.
Calvin senior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) tallied one save and collected his seventh shutout victory of the season.
"It was good to get a conference win in front of a homecoming crowd," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I was pleased to see the committed effort of our entire team tonight. Every single player on our team focused on the job they had to do and they did it well. Now it's time to refocus for a tough road game in three days."
Calvin will travel to Albion next Tuesday for a key conference match. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Olivet 2, Calvin 1
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team hosted Olivet College on Saturday evening in the first game of the Knights' Homecoming Weekend. In a hard-fought conference battle, the Knights fell to the Comets by a score of 2-1.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 9-3-0 overall and into second place in the MIAA standings with a 6-2-0 conference mark. The Comets improve to 7-4-0 and 5-3-0 in the MIAA.
Olivet took an early lead when senior Isabelle Leon capitalized on a breakaway chance in the fifth minute.
Freshman Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the Knights' first shot in the 20th minute, sparking Calvin's offense. The Knights controlled play for the remainder of the half, firing four additional shots before the break.
At the half, the Knights held a 5-2 shots advantage.
Four minutes into the second half, freshman Grace Visser (Coopersville, Mich./Unity Christian) scored her first collegiate goal, knotting the score at one. Senior Sydney Barcey (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) crossed the ball in to center of the box and Visser settled it before firing it into the Comets' net.
After high intensity back-and-forth play, Olivet regained its lead in the 79th minute as Leon scored on another breakaway opportunity.
In the final 13 minutes of play, Calvin logged five shots. Despite late pressure from the Knights, they were unable to find the back of the net for the game-tying goal.
Calvin finished with a 16-10 shots advantage, including six off the foot of freshman Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian).
Freshman goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hill Northern) recorded two saves on the evening.
The Knights are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
WOMEN'S GOLF
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin women's golf team placed seventh at MIAA Jamboree #4 on Saturday with a team score of 369 strokes.
Saturday's MIAA Jamboree was hosted by Adrian College at the Lenawee Country Club.
Calvin remains in seventh place in the overall team standings and despite finishing in seventh, remains just 15 strokes back of sixth place Albion.
Freshman Linnea McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater HS) came up with a season-best round of 85 to finish tied for eighth individually. The round marked the second consecutive season-best effort for McDonough as she fired a round of 89 on Wednesday in an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Calvin at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club.
Junior Nicole VanderYacht (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jessica Zylstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had rounds of 92.
Junior Katy Hamilton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) had a score of 100 and senior Gen Best (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) a round of 105.
Freshman Amanda Scholten (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) also had a round of 103, competing individually for the Knights.
Saint Mary's took first place on Saturday with a team score of 324 strokes. The Belles now lead in the MIAA overall team standings by 13 strokes.
Summer Stillson of Saint Mary's was the tournament medalist on Saturday with a round of 75.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin men's cross country team put together a superb afternoon at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday.
Competing in a field of Division I teams in the Gold Division, Calvin put together a performance that would have placed third in the final team standings. As the only Division III team in the field however, Calvin was not given a team score due to Division I cross country rules.
Calvin placed six runners in the top 57 spots led by the tandem of seniors Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) and Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Philipose took 14th in the 8K race with a time of 25:04 while DeJong was 15th in 25:07.
Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) had an outstanding race, finishing 30th in a time of 25:29 while junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was 36th in 25:36.
Sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) had a career-day, placing 54th in 25:56. Freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind, finishing 57th in 25:59.
Senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) provided strong support. Rylaarsdam was 72nd (26:11) and Smith 76th (26:16).
Junior Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) rounded out Calvin's finishers, placing 106th (26:51).
"I am extremely pleased with how our team ran today," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Our guys were not intimidated by the competition and ran like they belonged here. I thought up-and-down our lineup we ran extremely well and pushed each other. This was our best race so far of the season and it's a huge confidence booster for our team. We continue to improve and I am excited about what lies ahead for this group."
Temple University took first place in the Gold Division with a team score of 75 points.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin women's cross country team had a strong showing in the Gold Division of the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday afternoon.
Calvin placed three runners in the top 100 in the race. The Knights were the only Division III institution competing in the race. The remainder were Division I schools. As the only Division III team in the field, Calvin was not given a team score due to Division I cross country rules.
Junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) had another outstanding race on Friday, taking 24th individually in the 5K race with a time of 17:57.
Senior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) was 71st (18:37) with sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) finishing 100th (18:57).
Junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) was 111th (19:02) and senior Kate McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) 124th (19:10).
Junior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 155th (19:42) and sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville-South HS) 170th (20:01).
Sophomore Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 177th (20:08)junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) 185h (20:25) to round out Calvin's finishers.
"I thought we had a very good afternoon," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "We were able to shrink our time gap down from our the front to the back of our pack. I thought we competed well and made positive strides. This was a confidence builder and I think good things lie ahead for this team."
The University of Northern Iowa took first place in Friday's race with a team score of 86 points.
MEN'S TENNIS
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team finished the ITA Central Regional Tournament on Saturday. The Knights record one victory on Saturday.
"I thought we looked good today," said head coach John Ross. "I was very pleased with our victory today and our weekend as a whole."
The double team of Matthew VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) started the day with a 8-5 victory over Connolly and Vaca of Illinois College. The Knights then fell to Park and Yi of Wheaton 8-3.
The Knights return to action on February 17 against Concordia.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Calvin swimming & diving teams competed in the fun filled Water Carnival on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Knights swam against a pair of NCAA Division I schools, including Oakland.
"It was a great way to start the season," said Calvin head coach Dan Gelderloos." I saw a lot of smiles all day long and it really gave great perspective on having fun. We really had a great time. Michigan was a fantastic host."
In the 2x200-yard medley relay, the Knights took seventh place. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Texas/ Regents School of Austin) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) clocked in a time of 3:32.53.
Junior Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was the fastest Knight in the mixed 300-yard butterfly with fins at 3:03.13.
In 14th place in the mixed 50-yard freestyle with fins underwater was Lucas Holcombe at 21.05.
The team of freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) placed sixth in the mixed 500-yard freestyle variable distance relay at 4:21.88.
Sophomore Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) was the fastest Knights in the 100-yard IM at 57.47.
The Knights took ninth place in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay with fins. The team of Nathan Olberding, sophomore Luke Herman (Waterford, Wis./Burlington), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) and senior John Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee) touched the wall at 1:23.17.
Julian Iturbe was in eighth place in the mixed 300-yard IM at 3:16.42.
In the mixed 25-yard knockout, senior Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished in fourth place.
On the men's side, junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) placed fifth.
The Knights closed the day with a fifth place finish in the mixed 400-yard freestyle. The team of freshman Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian), Tanner Vincent, sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) and Ryan Gelderloos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished at 3:17.57.
The Knights return to action on October 20 against Grand Valley.
