Calvin Sports Information Student Employee Selected to Attend Upcoming CoSIDA Convention;
Brett Stoughton & Sarah Bradley Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

COSIDA CONVENTION

Calvin College junior Gina de Haan will participate in the inaugural CoSIDA Student Program at the CoSIDA Convention June 11-13 in Orlando, Florida.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, de Haan is one of a select group of students that will participate in the convention conducted by the College Sports Information Directors Association of America.

The CoSIDA Student Program allows selected students to participate in Division III Day, be exposed to the CoSIDA convention, its members and the athletics communication profession. Grant recipients will attend welcome and debrief meetings and be assigned a mentor. The goal is to build the pipeline in an effort to ultimately diversify the Division III athletics communication landscape. This effort is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III initiative.

While in Orlando next week, de Haan will be mentored by Sage College Sports Information Director Ann King - a 30-year veteran of the sports information field.

"I am excited to learn more about the sports communications field and I am excited to represent Calvin College," said de Haan. "It will be an honor to be mentored by Ann King and I am eagerly looking forward to the convention."

At Calvin, de Haan has been a three-year student employee in the Calvin Sports Information Office. As a student employee, de Haan has worked as a statistician, writer and social media contributor. She contributes game recaps and feature stories to the Calvinknights.com website on a weekly basis and serves as an official scorer for soccer, baseball, and lacrosse games. This past March, she was the primary contact for Calvin's ACHA hockey team that reached the ACHA Division III National Finals. She also provided assistance with Calvin hosting the NCAA III Women's Basketball Finals in March at Van Noord Arena.

"Gina has been an invaluable student employee over the last three years," said Calvin sports information director Jeff Febus. "She has a passion for sports and a passion to learn. She is fast-developing into a skilled communicator and has a bright future ahead of her."

She is no stranger to the sports information field as her father Phil de Haan served as Calvin Sports Information director for 12 years.

As a student, she is majoring in organizational communication while holding a minor in Spanish. de Haan spent the fall semester of the 2015-16 academic year volunteering as an elementary school teacher aid in Nicaragua.

de Haan is an avid follower of the National Hockey League and has served as a youth ice hockey official locally.
