GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin currently stands in seventh place in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings after an outstanding winter season. The Knights have 493.5 points through the recently completed winter sports campaign.
Calvin scored points in five of its six winter sports.
Calvin received 64.5 points from the women's swimming and diving team that placed 12th at the NCAA III Championships. The Calvin men's swimming and diving team finished 36th at the national meet to earn 36 points. Meanwhile the Calvin men's indoor track and field team placed 42nd to earn 29 points. The latest set of winter sports standings includes the NCAA sports of men's and women's basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, skiing, men's wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.
This fall, Calvin produced 314 points as it received points from its women's volleyball team, men's soccer team and men's and women's cross country teams.
The Learfield Directors' Cup race is held at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions. The Learfield Directors' Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA and NAIA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA and NAIA Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90 points. Third place is worth 85 points and fourth place finishes count for 80 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Competition will continue with the spring sports season and conclude in May. Calvin finished in 27th place last year in NCAA Division III with 515.75 points.
Washington University of St. Louis currently leads the standings with 837 points while Williams is second (705.25), Tufts third (699), Johns Hopkins fourth (592.5), Middlebury fifth (584) and Wisconsin-Whitewater sixth (500.25).
