CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 20, 2017

BASEBALL
Maryville 8, Calvin 7
Calvin 7, Maryville 4

MARYVILLE, TN - Calvin split a non-conference doubleheader at Maryville College Monday night, dropping game one 8-7 and winning game two 7-4.

In game one, Calvin fell behind 4-2 after one inning of play but used a three-run second to take 5-4 lead. Senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids HS) belted a two-run RBI double. Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) brought home another run with an RBI groundout.

Maryville (14-12) responded with four runs in the third to build an 8-5 lead. Calvin came back with a two-run to right field in the fifth by junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Ca./Whitter HS) to trim the deficit to one.

Calvin went down in order in both the sixth and seventh as Maryville blocked a comeback bid by the Knights.

Freshman Micah Berlage (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) went the first 2.1 innings and took the loss for the Knights. Freshman David Dahms (Darien, Il./Hinsdale South HS) went the final 3.1 innings for the Knights in relief.

Senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) continued his red-hot start at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) had two hits as did Salgado with Salgado driving in four runs.

Game two was a scheduled nine-inning contest.
After falling behind early 1-0, Calvin came up with two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to right by Wolfe and a sacrifice fly by Kotva.

The Knights (3-5) came up with a big surge in the eighth as senior Pat Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) and Kempton delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles. Wolfe then unloaded a three-run homer to left, giving the Knights a 7-1 lead. The home run by Wolfe was the 20th of his Calvin career, pushing him past Matt Schepel and into first place on the Calvin career home run list.

Maryville pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth but got no closer as the Knights sealed the win.

Freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was credited with the win as he tossed 3.1 innings of relief. VanDuyn is now 2-1 on the season. Sophomore Jimmy Dirksen (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) went the first 3.1 innings while freshman Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) also saw time in relief.

Kempton went 3-for-5 in the win to boost his season batting average to .387. Wolfe also went 3-for-5 with fourn runs batted in. Avila and freshman Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) also had two hits apiece as part of Calvin's 12-hit attack.

Calvin will now break until Thursday when it travels to Knoxville to face Sewanee in a doubleheader slated to start at noon.

SOFTBALL
Fontbonne 10, Calvin 2
Calvin 2, St. Catherine 1

ORLANDO, FL - CLERMONT, Fla. - The Calvin softball team moved to 6-2 on the season after a pair of games at the PFX Spring Games. The Knights started the day with a 10-2 loss to Fontbonne, but rallied to upset the No. 15 ranked Wildcats of St. Catherine, 2-1.
"We weren't on top of our mental game against Fontbonne," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "It showed with some of the mistakes we made in the field and on the base paths. Game IQ is something we can control, and it was certainly one of the areas we struggled to make adjustments."
The Griffins struck first on Monday with two runs in the first inning.
Calvin tied the game with a pair of runs in the top half of the second inning.
Freshman Jordan VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) scored junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) on a single. Sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) later brought home VanEerden on a single.
Fontbonne closed the game on an 8-0 run to secure the victory.
Maddie DeGroot led the team with two hits.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) posted a season-high three strikeouts.
The second game on the day proved to be a defensive battle with the No. 15 Wildcats.
St. Catherine struck first on Monday when a shot snuck through the middle of the infield to score Anna Hinderaker.
Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) tied the game at one in the top of the fifth inning with a blast to right field that scored junior Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo).
The Calvin defense stood strong in the bottom of the sixth, with the game-winning run on first base, the nights turned the unconventional 2-1-5-4 double play to get out of the inning.
Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) tallied the winning hit with a double down the leftfield line, scoring Anna Gernant from first base.
"I was very pleased how we bounced back after a tough morning game," said Hilgert. "St. Catherine's is a top-notch program and our team was prepared for a tight battle. I credit Anna and Kaley for doing a great job as our battery unit and our defense answered the call with the big double play in the bottom of the sixth inning. "
Anna Gernant held St. Catherine to five hits on the day. She recorded eight strikeouts.
Jessica Brasser and Maddie DeGroot both finished the game with two hits.
The Knights will face UW-Whitewater and Bowdoin on Tuesday.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Luther 5, Calvin 4

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women's tennis team was edged by regionally-ranked Luther College 5-4 Monday morning as the Knights opened their spring break trip schedule.

Calvin (3-3) fell behind 2-1 after doubles play and were unable to make up the deficit as the Knights split the six singles points.

In doubles action, junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) pulled out a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles. Calvin's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and senior Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) fell 8-5 while its No. 2 doubles team of junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home Schooled) and senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian HS) fell 8-3.

In singles action, Bouma was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles. Freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian Hs) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles and Foote a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 winner at No. 6 singles.

Spoelhof fell 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Benzel dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match at No. 3 singles and Seazzu lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Luther entered Monday's match ranked 19th in the ITA Division III Central Region rankings.

"We had a very tough opponent to open our week but I liked the way we competed," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Ultimately this match came down to doubles and which team could get two of the three points. We tried to rally in singles but came up just short."

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday for a pair of matches. Calvin will face Grinnell College at 1 p.m. and Lawrence College at 6 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS
Luther 8, Calvin 1

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Luther College Monday morning on the opening day of its spring break trip.

The loss was the first of the year for the Knights who are now 7-1 on the season.

Senior Tony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) claimed an 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles. Junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) and senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fell 8-4 at No. 1 doubles while junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) and freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon HS) fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Luther swept the six singles points. VanWinkle put up a strong fight at No. 3 singles before falling 6-3, 7-6. Vroon also dropped a tough 6-2, 7-5 match at No. 5 singles while Wolters fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Calvin is back in action on Tuesday, facing Lawrence College at 1 p.m.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
CENTRE 15, Calvin 12

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team came up short on Monday morning in Florida against Centre. The Knights were nipped 15-12 and move to 1-4 on the year.
"I'm very proud of the way the team played today," said head coach Blake Boehm. 'We're learning a lot about ourselves and pushing our limits. This was the best 'team lacrosse' I've seen us play. There are still plenty of things we need to work on, but we're excited by the progress we are making."
Sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) got the scoring started at the 22:52 mark of the first half, with an assist to Madeline Baas.
The Colonels took the lead with two-straight goals.
Sophomore Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) tied the game up with a goal on a free position shot.
Senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) tie the game up again at three with a goal on a free position shot.
Centre responded with a 4-1 run, the lone Calvin goal coming from junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos).
Davio struck again with 3:23 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 7-5 going into halftime.
Emily Cefaratti scored her second goal of the game with 28:50 left.
Centre got some separation with a 5-1 run that lasted 13 minutes. Amanda Davio scored her third goal of the morning during the run.
Calvin finished the final 10 minutes of the game on a 5-2 run. With three goals from Emily Cefaratti. Freshman Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) and freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) were the two other goal scorers for Calvin.
Emily Cefaratti had a game-high nine shots.
Sophomore Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Country Day School) recorded three saves on Monday.
Calvin held a 27-19 advantage on ground balls, including four from Ellis Chalfant and Emma Verrett.
Junior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) had a team-high three draw controls.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday against Clarkson.
