MIAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY THREE REPORT;
TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS COMPETE AT GVSU TUNE-UP INVITE
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team remained in first place after the third day of the four-day MIAA Championships at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. The Knights recorded one victory on Friday to finish the day with 571 points. Kalamazoo passed the Flying Dutch to take second place at 458 points; Hope is in third place at 426 points.
"Our 200 medley had a great performance," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "I was really pleased with them. The highlight of the night was our 200 freestyle, to take the top-three spots was impressive. Our depth has been key for us this year and it was again tonight."
The evening started with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), freshman Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee), freshman Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), and junior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clocked in a season-best time of 1:46.87.
Freshman Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 400-yard individual medley in fifth place at 4:47.08. In sixth place was sophomore Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./home school) at 4:50.25.
Emily Gunderson recorded the ninth-fastest 100-yard butterfly time in school history with a sixth-place finish at 59.51.
The Knights dominated the 200-yard freestyle on Friday with a 1-2-3 finish. Abby Van Harn led the way with a season-best time of 1:51.58. Sophomore Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) had the fourth-fastest time in school history at 1:52.91. In third place was freshman Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) with a season-best time of 1:56.37.
Junior Klara Oh (Kent, Wash./home school) was the fastest Calvin swimmer in the 100-yard breaststroke. Oh touched the wall at 1:09.77 to finish in sixth place. In seventh place was senior Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux City, Iowa/Unity Christian) at 1:11.16 and Anna Kutschke was in eighth at 1:12.16.
Calvin was able to get four swimmers into the 100-yard backstroke finals. Abbey Wellman was the fastest Knight in fourth place at 59.14. Wellman had the fourth-fastest time in school history in the prelims at 58.82. Sophomore Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) had the seventh-fastest time in school history in sixth place at 59.46. In seventh place was sophomore Daniella Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) at 1:01.54 and freshman Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) checked in at 1:01.69 to finish in eighth place.
The MIAA Championships resume on Saturday for the final day of competition.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team is in second place after day three of the four-day MIAA Championships at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. The Knights tallied one first-place finish on Friday to stand with 522 points. Albion leads with 685 points; Hope is in third place at 458 points.
"We had some things that didn't quite go the way we were hoping," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "But that is what happens in life and the lesson learned is to put it behind you and keep grinding. I am happy for Ben Holstege. He kept his chin up, worked hard and got the victory. We have to regroup and come back with our best effort tomorrow."
The Knights started the day getting nipped at the finish line in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville), and sophomore Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) clocked in a season-best and NCAA B-Cut time of 1:31.50. Albion won with a time of 1:31.26.
Junior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) notched a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley for a NCAA B-Cut time of 4:05.16. Freshman Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) was in sixth place at 4:14.75.
Calvin had two of the three fastest times in the 100-yard butterfly. Jared Britton clocked in at 49.41 to take second place with the third-fastest time in school history. In third place was Brett Stoughton at 49.49, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Both times are NCAA B-Cut times.
Freshman Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:42.26 with the eighth-fastest time in school history. Junior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) was in fifth place at 1:44.31. DeYoung had the 10th-fastest time in school history in the prelims at 1:42.96. Sophomore Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was in eighth place at 1:47.08.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Eli Holstege touched the wall at 58.38 to take third. Sophomore Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) was in seventh place at 1:00.47, Lensing had the 10th-fastest time in school history in the prelims at 59.91.
Ben Holstege posted the first Calvin victory at the MIAA Championships in the 100-yard backstroke. Holstege touched the wall first at 49.98 with a NCAA B-Cut time. Holstege is the only swimmer is Calvin history to swim under 50 seconds.
The Knights finished the night with junior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) finishing in seventh place on the 3-meter boards at 423.80.
The MIAA Championships resume on Saturday for the final day of competition.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE, Mich, - The Calvin men's track and field team competed at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up Invitational Friday night.
Calvin had a handful of notable performances. Those performances included:
*Junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fifth in the 400 meters (50.47).
*Senior Jeiel Burrel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fourth in the high jump (6-2 3/4).
*Senior Brendan Van Houten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking 12th in the shot put (43-5) and 16th in the weight thtorw (47-7 3/4).
*Sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) taking fifth in the long jump (21-0 3/4).
*Junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) taking 10th (13-11 3/4) and freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) placing 13th (13-3 3/4) in the pole vault.
*Junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing 11th in the mile run (4:22.88).
*Senior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS) taking 12th (1:57.50) and junior Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) taking 13th (1:57.68) in the 800 meters.
*Junior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) placing sixth (8:55.11) and freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) taking eighth (9:00.80) in the 3,000 meters.
*Junior Nathan Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) taking second in the 5,000 meters (16:19.85) and freshman Jason Klaasen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) taking fourth (16:31.62).
*Junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) placing eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.90).
*Calvin's 4x400 meter relay of Schaap, Vermeulen, junior Nate Veldboom (East Jordan, Mich./Ellsworth HS) and freshman Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) taking third in a time of 3:29.31.
Calvin will now prepare to host the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships next Saturday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center and the Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

*Love taking 10th in the weight throw (49-9).
*Junior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) taking fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.06).
*Junior Caroline Boss (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) taking ninth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:19.64.
*Junior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Skyline High School) placing 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 27.30.
*Sophomore Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) taking 10th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:24.53.
*Freshman Jenna Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) taking second (20:20.05) and freshman Lindy Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) taking third (21:14.11) in the 5,000 meters.
*Junior Bethany Van Eck (Cliffton, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) taking 10th in the high jump (4-11), freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) taking 11th (4-9) and sophomore Erin VanLenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) taking 13th (4-9).
*Junior Kayla VanLenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) taking eighth in the pole vault (9-10) and sophomore Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) taking 10th (8-10 1/4).
