Calvin Soccer Players Receive CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors;
Swimming and Diving Teams Crack National Polls – Van Harn Named Division III National Swimmer of Week
MEN'S SOCCER
Three members of the nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team have been named to the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District 6 team.
Named to the team from Calvin are seniors David Waterson and Stephan Hooker and sophomore Jacob Witte.
The CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District 6 team includes players from the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Individuals are voted to the all-district team by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association of America.
As a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, Waterson, Hooker and Witte are now all eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
A defender, Waterson is from DeWitt and a graduate of DeWitt High School. Waterson has been a three-year starter for the Knights and started 68 of a possible 80 games in his collegiate career for a program that has captured four consecutive MIAA regular season championships.
A year ago, Waterson was named to the All-MIAA second team.
A strong two-way player who links the defense with the offense, Waterson has a goal and six assists during his collegiate career including a goal and two assists this fall.
He is a tri-captain for Calvin's 2016 team that is currently ranked 20th nationally.
Waterson is a biochemistry major who has been a regular member of the Calvin Dean's List and the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. He plans to attend medical school after graduating from Calvin.
A midfielder, Hooker is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. Hooker is also a tri-captain on this year's Calvin men's soccer team.
Hooker has seven goals and two assists this fall including four game-winning goals. He also has 12 goals and five assists in his career. He was named to the All-MIAA first team in 2014 and 2015 and was named the 2013 MIAA Newcomer of the Year. He was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Central Region first team selection in 2015 and a second team choice in 2014.
Hooker is a business marketing major with minors in psychology and kinesiology. He was a member of the 2014 MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Witte is a sophomore from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A wing forward, Witte has six goals and three assists this fall in his first year as a full-time starter. He tallied five goals and four assists in a reserve role as a freshman in 2015 and scored a memorable game-winning goal inside the final 10 minutes of regulation last November in a 1-0 NCAA III Tournament quarterfinal win over Kenyon College.
A speech pathology major, Witte was a member of the 2016 MIAA Academic Honor Roll and is a two-time member of the Calvin Dean's list.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin College senior Kailey Jo has been named to the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District team in women's soccer.
Jo is a member of the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District 6 team which includes players from the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Individuals are voted to the all-district team by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association of America.
As a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, Jo is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Jo is in the midst of a standout senior campaign as a defender for the Calvin women's soccer team.
On the defensive end, she has been a linchpin on a Calvin defense that has posted six shutout victories. She has also joined the Calvin offensive attack, posting two goals and three assists while taking the bulk of Calvin's corner kicks.
In Calvin's 2-1 overtime victory over Alma Wednesday afternoon, she was part of Calvin's game-tying goal in the final five minutes of regulation as she bent a corner kick into the box that was redirected into the goal by teammate Emily Van Veldhuizen.
Jo is a speech pathology major at Calvin. A three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Jo has also been on the Calvin Dean's list three times.
Jo is one of five women's soccer players from the MIAA on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team as she is joined on the team by Grace Smith and Christina Dandar of Kalamazoo, Isabelle Leon of Olivet and Elizabeth Perkins of Hope.
The Calvin women's soccer team is currently 10-7-1 overall and in third place in the MIAA standings with a 9-4-1 conference mark.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams have cracked the initial College Swim Coaches Association of America Division III Top 25 poll.
The Calvin men are ranked 16th in the men's poll while the Calvin women are ranked 14th in the women's poll.

Both teams are competing at Olivet on Saturday in dual meets scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin junior Abby Van Harn has been named the Division III National Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Van Harn had a standout set of performances this past weekend as the Knights kicked off their 2016-17 campaign.
At the MIAA Relays Friday night in Holland, Van Harn anchored Calvin's first place 200 freestyle relay with a split of 23.94. She also led off Calvin's first place 200 butterfly relay that finished in a time of 1:53.35. In addition, she was a part of Calvin's first place 500 freestyle relay team that clocked in with a time of 4:47.34.
On Saturday in a triangular with Grand Valley State and Hillsdale at Calvin's Venema Aquatic Center, Van Harn captured first place in the 50 freestyle (24.29) and 100 freestyle (52.98). She was also part of Calvin's 200 medley relay team that placed third and its 400 freestyle relay team that placed second.
Earlier in the week, she was named the MIAA Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for the third time in her collegiate career.
