Volleyball Opens Wittenberg Tourney With Win Over Heidelberg;
Men's Golf Second Through Day One at Irish Hills Invite

VOLLEYBALL

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The No. 3 Calvin volleyball team improved to 8-0 on the year with a 3-0 victory over Heidelberg on Friday evening. Calvin opened the Wittenberg Fall Classic with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 victory. Heidelberg falls to 7-4 on the year.
"I am very happy with our intensity and resolve," said head coach Amber Warners. "Heidelberg is very strong and scrappy team. It was a great win for us. We need to come ready to play some volleyball tomorrow."
Heidelberg went ahead year in the first set, pushing the lead to 3-0 and 7-2. Calvin would not slink away however, and would go on a 6-0 run behind the serve of sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) to take a 10-9 lead. With the set tied at 11, the Maroon and Gold would push away with a 9-1 run. The Knights would go on to take the set, 25-14.
The Knights would take an early lead in the second set at 6-2, to see Heidelberg come back and tie the set at nine. Calvin would counter the Heidelberg attack with a 9-2 run to secure the set. The second set would go to Calvin, 25-18.
The third set was tight throughout and had six ties. Calvin led a majority of the set and pushed the lead to 16-12 with a kill from senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard). Heidelberg would chip away at the Calvin lead and would tie the set at 19. Calvin would take the lead and Heidelberg would tie the set until the 23-23 mark. Laura Danhoff once again gave the Knights the lead with a kill and Anna Kamp would seal the deal with a kill from junior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian).
Junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) and Laura Danhoff both finished with 12 kills. Jenna Lodewyk tallied 31 assists and sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) had 13 digs. Freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had a career-high four total blocks. Emily Blankespoor had a game-high three service aces.
The Knights have a tough Saturday schedule ahead, starting the day with No. 5 Juniata and closing the day at No. 8 Wittenberg.

MEN'S GOLF

JACKSON, Mi. - The Calvin men's golf team is in second place in a field of eight teams at the Irish Hills Invitational hosted by Adrian College.

The Knights fired a round of 297, six strokes behind Hope. Calvin is 10 strokes ahead of third place Adrian heading into Saturday competition.

Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) led the way for the Knights with a round of 69. Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a 74 while sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 75.

Sophomore Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79 with sophomore Alec DeJonge (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) rounding out Calvin's finishers with an 82.
