VOLLEYBALL

SATURDAY RECAP
Calvin 3, Chicago 0

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Calvin volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Chicago at the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic. The Knights downed the Maroons, 25-11, 25-9 and 25-22. Calvin won all three matches at the Gargoyle Classic with victories over Millikin and Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday.
"We came out with a lot of intensity," said head coach Amber Warners. "We played with a steadiness throughout the whole match that we didn't see yesterday. I am very happy with our defense and serving."
The Knights jumped on the Maroons early on Saturday, starting the match on a 9-1 run. At the 10-4 mark of the first set, Calvin would go on a 3-0 run and would not let the Maroons get closer than eight points the rest of the set and would take the set, 25-11. The Knights would hit.469 in the first set, led by junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) with five kills.
Calvin would take an early lead again in set two against Chicago. Leading 6-4, the Knights would extend the lead behind the serve of sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) and two aces to take an 11-4 lead. Calvin would not look back and would take the second set, 25-9.
The third set would be the closest of the three on Saturday. The Knights would get some separation while leading 11-9, with a 4-0 run, to take a 15-9 lead. Calvin would push the lead to 24-18 when Chicago would go on a 4-0 run to cut the Calvin lead to 24-22. Senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) would close the door on the match with a kill from junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian).
Sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) and Tessa Van Laare had a game-high 11 kills. Junior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Keilahna Castillo both tallied four aces in the victory. Freshman Abby Gorter (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) recorded her first kill at Calvin and junior Megan Van Solkema (Escondido, Calif./Calvin Christian) recorded her first kill since 2014. Freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) led the Knights with 1.5 blocks. Laura Danhoff tied her career high in digs with nine. Jenna Lodewyk had a game-high 32 assists.
Laura Danhoff, Sarah DeVries and Anna Kamp were all named to the Gargoyle Classic all-tournament team, Danhoff was named the Tournament MVP.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as the face MIAA foe Albion. The game has been moved to Van Noord Arena at Calvin due to safety concerns for the student-athletes with the temperature rising in the state of Michigan.

FRIDAY RECAP

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Calvin volleyball team started the 2016 season in winning fashion on Friday afternoon. The Knights started the Gargoyle Classic with a thrilling, 3-2 victory over Millikin. Calvin would go onto close the day with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Maroon and Gold are 2-0 on the young season.
"I am pleased with how the team responded today," said head coach Amber Warners. "It was a long and hard day and we were able to preserve and get two wins against two really good teams. We have to get ready for tomorrow, because we know that tomorrow will be tough again."
The Knights found themselves in a battle with Millikin in the first match. The Knights take the first set, 25-23. Millikin would not go away and would take the next two sets 28-26 and 25-23. The Knights would fight back and would force a fifth set, taking the fourth set, 28-26.
Calvin recorded 14 aces in the five-set victory, junior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) had seven and senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) notched five. The Knights had three players finish with double-digit kills, Laura Danhoff had 17, freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had 16 and sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) had 14. The Maroon and Gold finished the match with 8.5 blocks, junior Alyssa Scholten (Byron Center, Mich./Covenant Christian) and Laura Danhoff both finished with 3.0 blocks. Junior Jenna Lodewyk recorded 52 assists and Kristen Vyletel led the Knights with 16 digs.
Calvin would close the day sweeping the Blugolds of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 3-0. The Knights would win in straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.
Sarah DeVries finished with a team-high 10 kills. Jenna Lodewyk finished with 27 assists. Sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) finished with a team-high three aces and 12 digs. Laura Danhoff notched 2.5 blocks against the Blugolds.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The 21st-ranked Calvin men's cross country team rolled to a first place finish at its own Calvin Knight Invite on Saturday, posting a team score of 21 points. The Knights took four of the top five spots and placed six runners in the top 13 to run away with the win.

Senior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was the top individual collegiate finisher with a time of 25:31. Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) was next for Calvin in a third place time of 25:46. Sophomore Jamison Koeman (Milford, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fifth in 25:57 and junior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) sixth in 25:59.

Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's fifth man, placing 12th in 26:12 while junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./Mount Prospect HS) took 13th (26:14).

Also placing in the top 20 for Calvin were sophomore Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) in 16th (26:21), senior Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) in 17th (26:27) and freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) in 20th (26:35).

Temperatures were moderate Saturday morning leading to a fast course according to Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "It was a beautiful day at the Calvin cross country course," said Diemer. "It was crisp and cool just like a fall morning and we showed that we are ready to start dreaming. Today there were certain things that we needed to accomplish. The thing I noticed is that we were more about just individual running. We were a team."

Calvin will now break for two weeks and will prepare its varsity group for a trip to the state of Washington where the Knights will compete at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational on September 17. Meanwhile another group from Calvin's cross country team will compete at the Spartan Invitational that same day.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The 20th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team motored its way to a first place triumph Saturday morning at the Calvin Knight Invite.

Calvin posted a first place team score of 32 points. The Knights placed five runners in the top 10 led by senior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, Mn./St. Croix Preparatory HS) who placed third with a time of 17:51.

Senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was sixth in 18:16. Senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) then led a tight pack of three as she placed eighth (18:36) while freshman Johanna Admiraal (Cincinnati, Oh./Towson HS) was ninth (18:37) and sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) 10th (18:38).

Calvin four more runners inside the top 20 with junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) placing 15th (19:09), freshman Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian HS) taking 16th (19:10), junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) placing 18th (19:16) and freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing 19th (19:18). Sophomore Lindsey Fox (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 21st (19:22) and junior Kate McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) 23rd (19:26).

"I was extremely impressed with the way we supported one another," said Calvin head coach Brian Diemer. "We did not run as individuals. We ran as a team. I loved our pack running and the way we worked for the finish line. This team has big dreams and big goals and today was a solid first step in where we want to go."

MEN'S SOCCER

SATURDAY RECAP
Ohio Wesleyan 2, Calvin 1

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops came out on top against the Knights on Saturday night, walking away 2-1 winners. The lose snaps a 36 regular-season match unbeaten streak for Calvin that had stood since Sept. 5, 2014, when the Knights lost at Wheaton.
"Tough loss against a really good side," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We have been able to know them quite well over the past few years and we have a ton of respect for OWU. We have to learn from this. I'm not sure we gave the greatest account of ourselves tonight, but I'm hopeful that we can pick up some things and keep moving forward."
Both teams had their chances in the first half, but neither were able to capitalize. Heading into halftime, the Knights outshot the Battling Bishops, 5-3.
The Battling Bishops struck first in the 68th minute off of a header from Luke Bean.
Ohio Wesleyan struck again in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick caused by a handball in the box.
Senior Isky Van Noord (Calgary, Alberta/Western Alberta) had a well-placed ball into the upper corner in the final few minutes but the OWU keeper was able to come up with the key save.
Freshman Ben Mast (Grand Haven, Mich./Spring Lake) was able to get Calvin on the scoreboard with three seconds left in the match. The goal was his first at Calvin College. Junior Derek Williams (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was credited with the assist.
Calvin outshot Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday night, 16-7.
Junior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) made some big saves on Saturday and tallied four saves on the night.
Junior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth) and Isky Van Noord both had three shots for Calvin.
The Knights return to action on September 9 when they open the home schedule against Benedictine.
FRIDAY RECAP
Calvin 4, Ohio Wesleyan 1

DELAWARE, Oh. - Calvin opened its 2016 season in winning fashion, defeating Capital University 4-1 at the Fred Myers Invitational Friday afternoon on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Senior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) scored pair of first half goals to stake Calvin to an early 2-0 lead. Hooker's first goal came 12:09 into the match as he ripped a shot off the crossbar and then smacked in his own rebound to put the Knights on the board. In the 23rd minute, Hooker redirected a centering pass from sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS) into the back of the net.

Capital (0-1) countered with a goal in the 36th minute to cut the deficit in half leading into halftime.

The Knights took early control in the second half however as senior Isky Van Doorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) lofted a beautiful ball into the box that sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was able to head up and over the Capital goalkeeper. The Vegter goal was the first of his collegiate goal and gave the Knights a 3-1 lead.

Calvin completed the scoring in the 68th minute as senior David Waterson (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) broke free through the left side of the box and tucked a shot just inside the right goalpost.

Calvin finished the game with a 10-7 shots at goal advantage. Junior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) picked up the win for Calvin in goal.

"It was great to get a win right away," said Calvin head coach Ryan Souders. I am proud of each guy on our team. It was a good team result. We certainly have some things we will need to work on but we're happy to get a win away from home against a quality opponent."

Calvin will close out competition at the Fred Meyers Invitational Saturday night at 7 p.m. against host Ohio Wesleyan. The game will feature a meeting of nationally-ranked teams as Calvin is ranked fourth and Ohio Wesleyan 18th.

MEN'S GOLF

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Knights finished the two-day Lou Collins Memorial Tournament in fourth place. Calvin shot the second-lowest round of the day at 289, for a two-day total of 594 strokes. Hope College took first place with a two-day total of 575 strokes. Calvin's round of 289 is 16 shots lower than on Friday.
"I saw some solid stuff from our guys today," said head coach Brian Bolt. "Fourth place was not our goal for the weekend, but we learned a lot of things. We are excited to get back out on the course for next weekend."
Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian) finished the tournament with a sixth-place finish. Van Noord improved his score by one stroke on Saturday at 71, for a two-day total of 143 at one under par for the weekend.
Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) landed in eighth place for the tournament with a one under par round of 71 on Saturday.
Shooting a round of 72 on Saturday was junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morning Star Academy) to finished tied for 26th place. He shot six shots better on Saturday than he did on Friday.
Sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a round of 75 on Saturday to take 28th place in the tournament with 153 stokes on the weekend.
Sophomore Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) improved upon his Friday performance with a round of 79 to finish tied for 43rd place.
Freshman Joshua Song (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) tallied a 14th-place finish with a round of 74 on Saturday.
Sophomore Alex DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Niles) finished the two-day tournament tied for 29th place, notching a Saturday round of 75, four shots better than on Friday.
The Knights return to action on Saturday for the first MIAA Jamboree of the year hosted by Trine.

WOMEN'S GOLF

BRISTOL, Wis. - The Calvin women's golf team finished the Shootout on the Border in 10th place. The Knights finished the two-day tournament at 718 strokes. Calvin had a combined round of 348 on Saturday, 22 strokes better than Friday. Wisconsin-Whitewater took first place with a two-day score of 645 strokes.
"Today was a confidence builder for us," said head coach Jerry Bergsma. "For us to shoot under 350 helps with the confidence. We had four scores under 90 today, which is a good day for our team."
Sophomore Nicole VanderYacht (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian) was the top finisher for Calvin this weekend in 27th place. VanderYacht recorded a round of 86, a shot better than on Friday.
Also shooting a round of 86 on Saturday was sophomore Grace Bolt (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). A five-shot improvement from Friday to finish tied for 33rd place at 177 strokes.
Senior Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had a seven-stroke improvement on Saturday at 87 strokes. She finished the competition tied for 46th place.
Junior Emilee McCusker (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) had a stellar day in her home state with a nine-shot improvement from Friday with a round of 89 on Saturday to finish tied for 56th place.
Junior Gen Best (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) tallied a round of 102 on Saturday for the Knights.
The Knights return to action on Friday as they travel to the two-day Olivet Invite.
