GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team swept the visiting Cornerstone Golden Eagles on Monday afternoon. The Knights improved to 19-13 on the season with a pair of victories over the 11-20 Golden Eagles. Calvin won the first game 9-2 and finished the day with a 5-1 victory. The Knights have now won six of their last seven games.
"We had really good pitching today," said Calvin head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "Kayla, Paige, unfortunately for Paige we didn't get some runs for her and Anna all did a great job today. We had a couple of big two-out hits in both games and we had a couple of seniors really hitting the ball well."
Senior Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) started the scoring for Calvin in the third inning of game one. Gildea singled to center field to score freshman Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS). Sophomore Jessica Brasser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled to center field to score freshman Anna Gernant and Lydia Gildea to give Calvin a 3-0 lead.
Cornerstone got a run back in the fourth inning when sophomore Jessica Wright singled to left field to score freshman Rachel Younts.
The Knights scored two more runs in the fourth inning, Gildea recorded two RBI when she singled to right field, scoring freshman Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and senior Caitlin Bell (Oak Brook, Il./Oak Park River Forest).
Senior Harlie Sherman cut into the lead to a homerun over the center-field fence.
Calvin pushed the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth inning. Senior Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) would score Caitlin Bell on a single down the left-field line. Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS) scored Rachel Borden and Ashley Riemersma on a single down the left-field line. Gernant scored on a single by Jessica Brasser.
Sophomore Makela Chapman (Lowell/Lowell HS) improved to 4-2 in the circle with the complete-game victory. Chapman struck out six in the win and held Cornerstone to seven hits.
Senior Rachel Nelson had a strong outing in the circle for Cornerstone in the loss, recording a strikeout in the first three innings. Sophomore Whitney Denton came in during the fourth inning.
Jessica Brasser and Rachel Borden had a game-high three hits in game one. Borden recorded her first-ever extra-base hit with a double in game one.
The scoring in game two started in the third inning with Calvin striking first. Ashley Riemersma doubled to left center to score Maddie DeGroot from second base.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the fifth inning with a single to left field by junior Ciara Wilke that scored senior Rachel Bode.
Calvin responded with a three-run fifth inning. Ashley Riemersma blasted a two-run shot over the left-field fence, scoring Maddie DeGroot to give Calvin a 3-1 lead. Jessica Brasser scored Lydia Gildea on a single up the middle.
The Knights added another run to the scoreboard in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Riemersma, scoring Maddie DeGroot.
The Calvin pitching staff held the Golden Eagles to four hits in game two. Junior Paige Groom (Potterville/Potterville HS) started the game and recorded two strikeouts. Anna Gernant recorded her 10th victory of the year and finished with five strikeouts.
Sophomore Brooke Leonard had a solid outing for Cornerstone, finishing with three strikeouts in the start.
Maddie DeGroot had a game-high three hits and three runs. Ashley Riemersma had a season-high four RBI.
Calvin returns to MIAA play on Wednesday when the Knights host the Flying Dutch for the final home games of the year.
MORE SOFTBALL
For the first time in her career, Calvin College senior Lydia Gildea has been named the MIAA Position Player of the Week in softball.
A native of Gobles and a graduate of Gobles High School, Gildea batted .632 last week as the Knights went 4-2 over the course of the week including 2-2 in league play.
A catcher, Gildea was 12-for-19 at the plate with four home runs, six runs scored and 12 runs batted in. She had an on-base percentage of .650 and a slugging percentage of 1.316. She did not commit an error in 45 total chances.
During the week, she established a new Calvin single-season record for runs batted in, boosting her season total to 42, surpassing the previous record of 38 shared by Abby Konyndyk and Lina Avila.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
For the third time in her career, Calvin College sophomore Amanda Davio has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse.
A native of Okemos and a graduate of Okemos High School, Davio tallied six goals and six assists last week in leading Calvin to victories over Saint Mary's and Kalamazoo.
In Calvin's 14-5 win over Saint Mary's last Tuesday, Davio came up with four goals and three assists. She then came up with two goals and three assists in Calvin's 12-8 win at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon. Over the course of the week, she was also credited with one ground ball and one draw control while forcing an opponent into one turnover.
Calvin is currently 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA. The Knights return to action on Tuesday, hosting Adrian at 5 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Alma 1
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team claimed an 8-1 conference victory over Alma Tuesday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. The win improves Calvin's season record to 10-5 and its conference mark to 3-3 heading into a key conference match at Trine on Wednesday.
Playing in his final match at Calvin, senior Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, Il./Fremnd HS) had a stellar afternoon, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jared Guy at No. 1 singles. Buesing also teamed up with sophomore David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) for an 8-6 win over Luke Van Fleet and Damien Arthur at No. 2 doubles.
Calvin swept the doubles competition as sophomore Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph/St. Joseph HS) and junior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) topped Jared Guy and Bryan Schutte 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Andrew Airgood (Sturgis/Sturgis HS) and Jason Wolters (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) were 9-7 winners at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Brown topped Schutte 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. VanWinkle claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles with junior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) winning 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Wolters also secured a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win at No. 5 singles.
"It was a really nice win," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "We had some great doubles matches and now we need to get ready for a tough road match at Trine on Wednesday."
Wednesday's match at Trine is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

ALMA, Mich. - Alma swept both ends of a doubleheader from Calvin Monday afternoon at Klenk Park, winning 6-1 and 4-3, allowing the Scots to take all four games of the series that began last Friday.
In game one, Alma outhit Calvin 9-3. Calvin scored its lone run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS). Junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, Il./Olympia HS) took the loss for Calvin in 5.1 innings of work to fall to 2-3 on the year.
In game two, Alma (21-10 overall, 12-8 MIAA) built a 2-0 lead through five innings but an RBI single by junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) in the top of the sixth cut the deficit in half. Alma responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth to build a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, freshman Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs/Northpointe Christian HS) and senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) collected run-scoring singles for the Knights to bring Calvin to within 4-3.
Calvin (10-22 overall, 6-14 MIAA) placed a runner in scoring position in the top of the eighth but could not bring home the tying run. Freshman Ryan Lang (Bedford, NH/Bedford HS) singled in the ninth but was later stranded at first.
Sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) went 5.2 innings for the Knights to take the loss and fall to 0-3 on the year. Senior Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) went the final 2.1 innings on the hill.
Wolfe and sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had two hits apiece for Calvin in the loss.
Calvin is back in action on Thursday, hosting Olivet in a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
