Men's Lacrosse Downed by Albion;
Women's Tennis Loses at Spring Arbor / Men's Tennis Falls at Kalamazoo
MEN'S LACROSSE
Albion 17, Calvin 6
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team fell short against the Albion Britons on Wednesday afternoon. The Britons topped the Knights, 17-6. Calvin moves to 5-8 on the year and 0-4 in the MIAA. Albion remains undefeated in MIAA action at 4-0 and improves to 8-4 on the season.
"One of the things we have been focusing on is playing with pride," said head coach Luke Griemsman. "We are not going back to the bad habits we have had. We have to try to battle through the whole game and that is a tough thing with the limited numbers we have. Things could be a lot worse but it is the pride that we just kept going back to and it helped us today."
The Knights got on the scoreboard first on Wednesday with Calvin scoring on a man advantage. Junior Joel Schaefer put the ball in the back of the net off of a pass from junior Chris Griffin.
The Knights led after the first quarter, 1-0.
The Britons responded with two-straight goals to retake the lead.
Chris Griffin tied the game at two with 11:38 remaining in the second quarter, with an assist to freshman Jonathan Miller.
Albion scored eight-straight goals to regain the lead.
Joel Schaefer put the ball in the back of the net again with 1:19 remaining in the half. Chris Griffin was credited with an assist.
The Britons went into halftime leading, 9-3.
Jonathan Miller cut the Albion to 10-4 with a goal with 9:33 remaining in the third quarter.
Albion scored the final five goals of the quarter to lead 15-4, after 45 minutes.
Joel Schaefer was able to get the ball past the Albion goaltender with 5:06 remaining in the game.
Freshman Jonathan Miller cut the Albion lead to 16-6 with a goal at the 2:46 mark of the fourth quarter.
Freshman Tristan Parece recorded 20 saves on the day.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights travel to Adrian.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Spring Arbor 5, Calvin 4
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team came up just short on Wednesday afternoon against Spring Arbor. The Cougars edged the Knights 5-4. Calvin is now 10-6 on the year and Spring Arbor improves to 14-7.
"Today was a tough loss," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We had our chances today but we just came up short. We showed a lot of fight and we are going to use today to help us prepare for a very important conference weekend."
The Cougars started the day winning two of the three doubles points on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles. The team of sophomore Lark Foote and junior Liz Turner defeated Alyssa Bart and Jewell Allen, 8-2.
Sophomore Jessica Bouma was victorious at No. 3 singles over Monika Wynne, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 4 singles, sophomore Micaela Seazzu earned the victory over Emma Joseph, 6-1, 6-2.
Liz Turner won at No. 5 singles over Morgan Keeler, 6-1, 6-1.
The Knights return to MIAA play on Friday afternoon when they travel to Adrian to face the Bulldogs.
MEN'S TENNIS
Kalamazoo 9, Calvin 0
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team fell to the Kalamazoo Hornets on Tuesday afternoon, 9-0. The Hornets are ranked 37th in the most recent ITA rankings. Calvin moves to 9-5 on the year and 2-3 in the MIAA. The Hornets are now 13-4 overall and 5-0 in MIAA play.
"Today was a tough battle," said head coach John Ross. "We have the weekend off and we have to use that to get ready for a very important week. We have two really important matches next week that we need to do well in."
The Hornets started the day taking all three doubles points.
Freshman Andrew Airgood and freshman Jason Wolters put up a fight at No. 2 doubles, but fell, 8-6.
Kalamazoo continued on to sweep the singles completion to win 9-0.
The Knights return to action on Monday for the final home match of the year. The Knights will host the Alma Scots in a key MIAA battle.
