NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships Day Three Recap;
Spring Sports Roundup
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GREENSBORO, NC - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team picked up its first All-America berth of the NCAA III Championships on Friday and it came from a familiar source. Senior Jordan Cochran (Mount Vernon, Oh./Mount Vernon HS) earned the fifth NCAA III All-America citation of his career by placing fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 54.82. It marked the third consecutive All-America berth for Cochran in the event.
Calvin also garnered an honorable mention All-America berth in the 800 freestyle relay as the team of senior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS), freshman Andrew Kasper (Batavia, Il./Marmion Academy), sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia/Ionia HS) and sophomore Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) took 14th with a time of 6:45.57.
In the morning prelims, junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville HS) had a time of 1:51.53 but did not advance to the finals as he finished 21st.
In the 100 backstroke prelims, sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia/Ionia HS) had a time of 50.58 and freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) a time of 50.63 but neither swimmer advanced. Junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) also had a prelim time of 56.56 in the 100 breaststroke but did not advance.
In the one-meter diving competition, sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) placed 23rd with a score of 363.30 points.
"We had a solid day," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was great to see Johnson grab another All-America award and go under 55 seconds. He has had a tremendous career at Calvin and he has one more day of competition left."
Heading into the final day of competition, the Calvin men's swimming and diving team sits in 16th place with 47 points.
Set to compete for Calvin on Saturday are Cochran in the 200 breaststroke, Buma, freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS) and Kasper in the 100 freestyle, Fish in the 200 backstroke, senior Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) in the 1,650 freestyle and a Calvin quartet in the 400 freestyle relay.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GREENSBORO, NC - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team picked up an honorable mention All-American berth at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships as its 800 freestyle relay team of senior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Anna Serino (Pinckney/Pinckney HS), freshman Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) and sophomore Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took 16th with a time of 7:36.31.
With the finish, Calvin is now 17th place in the team standings with 37 points.
Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday are Van Harn in the 100 freestyle, sophomore Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) on the three-meter diving board and a quartet in the 400 freestyle relay.
WOMEN'S GOLF
PALM DESERT, Ca. - The Calvin women's golf team took fifth in a field of six teams at the Augustana Spring Fling at the Classic Club Golf Resort on Friday. The Knights posted a team score of 375. Augustana (SD) took first place with a score of 310.
Senior Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) and freshman Emilee McCusker led Calvin with rounds of 90. Freshman Grace Bolt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 94.
Senior Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) was next with a 101. Gen Best and Katherine Ryan had rounds of 111 while junior Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) had a 112.
Emily Israelson of Augustana was the tournament medalist with a round of 74.
Calvin is back in action on April 2 when it takes on Cornerstone in a match play competition.
MEN'S GOLF
BEAUMONT, Ca. - The Calvin men's golf team took first at the Pomona Invitational with a team score of 307 strokes. Host Pomona Pitzer tied for second with Calvin's "B" squad with a team score of 332 strokes. Friday's competition was held at the Oak Valley Golf Club.
Calvin's "A" squad was led by sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who claimed medalist honors with a round of 69. Sophomore John VanNoor (Troy/Troy Athens HS) wasd next with a 78 while freshman Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79.
Senior Jason Zeigler (Gilead, Oh./Gilead Christian HS) had an 81 while sophomore Matt Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morning Star Academy) had an 84.
Calvin's "B" squad was led by freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 76. Senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 83. Freshmaan Alec DeJonge (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 86 while sophomore Sean Behrens (Arlington Heights, IL/Rolling Meadows HS) had an 87 and sophomore Alex Wagner (Pentwater/Pentwater HS) had an 89.
Calvin returns to action on April 11 when it competes at the Steve Tyler Memorial hosted by Kalamazoo at the Moors Golf Club.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 10, Piedmont 4
DEMOREST, Ga. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team improved to 4-2 on the year with a 10-4 win at Piedmont College Friday afternoon. The Knights finish their spring break swing through the state of Georgia with a 2-0 record.
Calvin took control early, leading 5-2 after one quarter and 8-3 at halftime. The Knights then hunkered down and played stellar defense over the final 30 minutes, limiting Piedmont to just one second half goal to claim the win.
"It was a great effort on both sides of the field but our work on ground balls and our goalie play really sealed up this victory," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Luke Griemsman. "There are certainly things that we need to work on to help us compete as we finish up our non-conference schedule but we are pleased to pick up a victory today."
Junior Chris Griffin (Hartland/Hartland HS) led the Calvin attack with a goal and five assists. Sophomore Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) had four goals on eight shot attempts. Sophomore Nate Ray (Northville/Northville HS) tallied two goals. Freshman Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a goal and five ground balls while also causing three Piedmont turnovers.
Freshman Jonathan Miller (Boise, ID/Ambrose School) had a a goal and an assist. Freshman Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills/Brother Rice) had a goal and junior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) had an assist.
Sophomore Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) had a team-high eight ground balls to go with four caused turnovers. Freshman Hunter Naggs (Cedarburg, Wisc./Cedarburg HS) was 6-for-10 on faceoffs. Freshman Tristan Parece (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary HS) had a great day in goal, making 13 saves in 16 shot attempts. Miller also saw time in goal and collected one save.
Calvin scooped up 36 ground balls as a team in the win and forced Piedmont into 17 turnovers.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Capital University on March 26 for a game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
BASEBALL
Western New England 10, Calvin 3
AUBURNDALE, Fl. - The Calvin baseball team ran into an undefeated squad from Western New England College Friday morning and came away with a 10-3 loss.
Western New England broke open a 3-3 game with a four-run seventh to build a 7-3 advantage. The Golden Bears (8-0) tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth to seal the win.
Calvin (4-6) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run homer by junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS). The home run was the fourth of the spring for Wolfe.
Western New England tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth and then broke the game open in the late innings.
The Golden Bears rapped out 18 hits against five Calvin pitchers.
Calvin had eight hits with freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) and senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) collecting two hits apiece.
Freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) went the first five innings for Calvin, scattering nine hits and allowing three runs. Senior Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) took the loss in relief for the Knights.
Calvin closes out its swing through Florida with a Saturday morning game against Trinity College of Connecticut slated to start at 9:15 a.m.
SOFTBALL
Bethel 8, Calvin 3
Transylvana 10, Calvin 2
CLERMONT, Fla. - The softball team came up short twice on Friday afternoon against Bethel and Transylvania. The Knights started the day falling to Bethel, 8-3, and finished the day falling to Transylvania, 10-2. Calvin finishes spring break with a 6-4 record.
"I am proud of what we accomplished this week," said head coach Tim Syrek. "This was a long week, we played 10 games which is a lot and to add the warm weather on top of that makes for a challenging week. The team handled themselves well and learned a lot this week and will use this week to make ourselves better."
The Knights struck first against Bethel in the first inning. Senior Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Goble HS) flew out to center field and scored freshman Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS).
The Royals would take control of the game in the second inning posting five runs in the inning. They would also score a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
Freshman Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, IA/Valley HS) crossed home plate in the sixth inning with a walk with the bases loaded.
In the seventh inning, sophomore Jessica Brasser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled to left center to score Rachel Borden from first base.
The Calvin pitchers recorded seven strikeouts in the loss with five from Anna Gernant. The pitching highlight of the game was freshman Kayla Carter (Holbrok, Mass./Shoreline Christian HS) recorded six outs, while only throwing eight pitches.
Rachel Borden led the Knights with two hits.
Calvin would strike first again on Friday, this time against Transylvania. Freshman Kristen Newman would get the scoring started in the second inning with a single up the middle to send home Lydia Gildea.
The Pioneers would score a run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game and added three more in the third to lead, 4-1.
Freshman Abby Colon (Caledonia/South Christian HS) belted a shot to left center to score Gildea from first base.
Transylvania would add two more in the fourth and scored four in the fifth inning to force the mercy rule.
The Pioneers held the Knights to only four hits on Friday, two of the hits coming from Lydia Gildea.
The Knights return to action on Friday when they head to Ohio to face Defiance for a double header.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Lawrence 2
ORLANDO, Fla. - The men's tennis team closed out spring break with a 7-2 victory over Lawrence on Friday afternoon. Calvin improves to 4-2 on the year and Lawrence falls to 5-3.
"It was a nice way to end a tough spring break," said head coach John Ross. "Lawrence is a very well coached team and they battled all day. I am proud of how the guys did today and this week."
The Maroon and Gold started the day sweeping doubles. Sophomore Matt VanWinkle and junior Taylor Asfour defeated David Jumes and Brian DeCorte at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, senior Matt Buesing and sophomore David Brown defeated Bill Schuman-Kline and David Brooker, 8-6 and freshman Jason Wolters and freshman Andrew Airgood won at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
David Brown was victorious at No. 3 singles, defeating Bill Schuman-Kline, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 4 singles, Taylor Asfour won over Adam Busch, 6-0, 6-2.
Sophomore Christopher Dausman notched a victory over Ethan Perushek at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Jason Wolters topped Izaya Turenne at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Lawrence won at No. 1 and 2 singles on Friday.
The Knights will return to the courts on March 30 when they travel to Spring Arbor.
