Jordan Daley Named CoSIDA Academic All-American in Men's Basketball;
Bethany Love Named MIAA Indoor Field Event MVP - All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field Teams Released
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College senior Jordan Daley has been named a Division III Academic All-American(r) in men's basketball as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Daley has been named to the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America first team. Daley is the fifth individual in Calvin men's basketball history to be named a (CoSIDA) Academic All-American. Steve Honderd (1992 and 1993), Chris Knoester (1993 and 1994), Aaron Winkle (1999 and 2000) and Jordan Brink (2015) were previously so honored.
Daley recently concluded a standout four-year Calvin career. Last weekend he was named to the All-MIAA first team. A three-year starter, Daley led Calvin in scoring this year with an average of 18.3 points a game while finishing second on the team in rebounding at 6.0 boards per contest.
In conference games, he finished fourth in the MIAA scoring race, averaging 17.6 points per contest. He also finished eighth in rebounding averaging 5.9 points per contest.
During the season he became the 25th player in Calvin men's basketball history to hit the 1,000 point plateau. He now ranks 20th on the Calvin career list with 1,067 points. This year, Daley was named to all-tournament teams selected at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic and D3hoops.com Classic. He collected three double-doubles over the course of the 2015-16 season including a 27-point, 11-rebound performance at rival Hope on January 27. In addition, he scored a career-high 32 points in a February 3 game against Albion.
Daley is majoring in psychology and holds minors in Spanish and kinesiology. Daley is a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. This past summer he was named to the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Honors Court. He is currently serving an internship with the Calvin Center for Social Research.
Daley is one of three individuals from the MIAA to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in men's basketball as Jared Holmquist of Trine was named to the first team and Ben Gardner of Hope named to the third team. Holmquist was also named to CoSIDA Division III Academic All-American of the Year in men's basketball.
Calvin student-athletes have now received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 116 times including four times during the 2015-16 academic year with Taylor Ten Harmsel (women's soccer, 2nd team), Jenna Lodewyk (women's volleyball, 3rd team) and Maggie Kamp (women's volleyball, 1st team) having previously been so honored.
The Division II and III Academic All-America(r) program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 DII and DIII Academic All-America(r) teams program.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin women's track and field has landed four of its members on the inaugural All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field Team.
Sophomore Bethany Love leads the list as she has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Event Performer as well as earning a spot on the all-conference squad.
A native of Kentwood and a graduate of East Kentwood High School, Love captured the women's shot put title last Saturday at the MIAA Indoor Championships with a throw of 42-9. She also placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 52-6.
Also landing spots on the all-conference squad are senior McKenzie Diemer, junior Lauren Strohbehn and sophomore Jenna Dyksen.
Diemer is from Caledonia and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School. She took home a title in the mile run with a time of 5:15.97 last Saturday while placing second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.70.
Strohbehn is from St. Croix, Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Croix Preparatory High School. At the MIAA Championships, Strohbehn captured the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:54.21 to finish six seconds ahead of the rest of a talented field. She then came back to place third in the 3,000 meters later in the day with a time of 10:28.13.
Dyksen hails from Hawthorne, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Eastern Christian High School. Dyksen was one of the top point producers at the MIAA Championships on Saturday, winning titles in the 60 meter hurdles (9.24) and triple jump (35-0) while also placing fourth in the long jump (17-2). In addition, she ran on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that placed second.
Calvin captured the MIAA title last Saturday by recording a first place team score of 183 points, finishing 50 points ahead of second place Hope.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's track and field team has landed a league-leading nine individuals on the inaugural All-MIAA team for men's indoor track and field.
Landing spots on the All-MIAA indoor track and field squad are seniors Lucas Wolters, Eric Jipping, Ethan Anderson, Matt Oram; junior Nathan Van Haitsma; sophomores Hendrik VerMeulen, Andrew Philipose and Ethan Valentine and freshman Luke Peterson.
Wolters is from Vincennes, Indiana. He is a graduate of South Knox High School. Wolters captured the MIAA title last Saturday with a vault of 15-3.
Jipping is from Canton and a graduate of Plymouth Christian High School. He claimed the MIAA title in the shot put with a throw of 48-5 while placing sixth in the weight throw (48-2).
Calvin's distance medley relay team claimed a win in one of the most exciting races of the meet, clocking in with a first place time of 10:29.92, finishing just ahead of Hope's team that took second with a time of 10:30.12. Calvin's distance medley relay team consisted of Oram, Peterson, VerMeulen and Van Haitsma.
Oram is from Toledo, Ohio. He is a graduate of Toledo Christian High School. He led off Calvin's winning distance medley relay team with an opening 1,200 meter leg. Peterson is from Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School. He ran the 400 meter portion of Calvin's DMR. VerMeulen is from Bright's Grove, Ontario. He is a graduate of St. Patrick's Secondary School. He ran the 800 meter leg of Calvin's distance medley relay. The relay was completed by Van Haitsma who ran the final 1,600 meter portion of the race for the win. Van Haitsma is from Olympia, Washington. He is a graduate of Olympia High School.
Anderson is from Stillwater, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Stillwater High School. Anderson was the MIAA Champion in the 5,000 meters, winning the race in a time of 15:06.68.
Philipose is from Mount Prospect, Illinois. He is a graduate of John Hersey High School. At the MIAA Championships, Philipose pulled double-distance duty, winning the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:51.37 while placing third in the 5,000 meters (15:22.47).
Valentine is from Mason, Ohio. He is a graduate of William Mason High School. Valentine provided fireworks in the 400 meters on Saturday, winning the race with a season-best time of 49.29 that currently ranks 22nd nationally. He also ran on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that placed sixth.
As a team, Calvin took second at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a team score of 166.5 points, finishing just 4.5 points behind league champion Trine University.
