Basketball Teams Claim Saturday Wins / Swimming and Diving Teams Have Strong Performances at Winter Invite / ACHA Hockey Team Completes Weekend Sweep of Hope
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 79, Wheaton 66
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team picked up its second win of the weekend, defeating Wheaton 79-66 at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. The game was part of the second day of action of the Midwest Challenge with teams from Hope and Carthage also competing.
Calvin (4-3) fell behind 9-2 in the opening minutes of Saturday's game but after a timeout, regrouped to forge a 27-25 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Tony Canonie with 5:38 left in the first half. The triple by Canonie was part of an 18-5 run to end the half for the Knights.
Calvin led throughout the second half, building a 49-36 lead on a layup by sophomore Mike Siegel with 14:32 remaining.
Wheaton (3-4) fought back to close to within five at 53-48 and 55-50 but a triple by Calvin sophomore Michael Wilks put the Knights up 58-50. Wheaton got no closer than seven points the rest of the way with Calvin extending its lead to as much as 17 points on a triple by Wilks with 5:21 to go.
Calvin was led by senior Jordan Daley who pumped in 24 points to go with six rebounds while Wilks had a career-high 19 points.
Ricky Samuelson had 19 points to lead Wheaton. Michael Berg and Jonathan Berntsen added 16 points apiece.
Calvin was 10 of 23 from three-point range in the win including 15 of 16 at the charity stripe. Calvin also held a 33-29 rebounding advantage.
"We came out slow and that was a little disappointing because before we got on the bus this morning, we discuss coming out with energy right away," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "After we called that first timeout, we got our focus together and from there it was just a lot of fun. We played hard and got after it on the boards and on defense. It was a collective team effort with different guys stepping up. The more this team plays, the more comfortable the guys will get with one another."
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Grace Bible at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 91, Saint Mary's 45
The Calvin women's basketball team improved to 6-1` overall and 2-0 in the MIAA with a 91-45 victory over visiting Saint Mary's College on Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin outscored the Belles 28-11 in the third quarter to pull away for the win.
Calvin was led by sophomore Ali Spayde with 18 points while junior Anna Timmer had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Lauren Goldthorpe tossed in 12 points off the bench including a pair of triples.
Freshman Rachel Warners also had a strong game off the bench with six points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Eleni Shea lead Saint Mary's (0-8 overall, 0-2 MIAA) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
"It was a good conference win and was good to get a game in at home," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "It's always good to get lot of players playing time. That will help improve our depth as the season goes along."
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Albion at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team finished in third place at the three-day Calvin Invite. The Knights finished the weekend with a score of 1027. Grand Valley finished in first place at 2035.
"We took a lot of meaningful strokes this weekend," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We definitely built some confidence and we are going to move forward with some great motivation."
Freshman Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) finished in seventh place in the 500 freestyle at 5:14.15. Serino recorded the sixth-fastest 500 freestyle time in school history in the prelims at 5:09.88.
Senior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) swam the fastest 200 backstroke on the day for Calvin. She touched the wall at 2:10.39 in the prelims and in 13th in the finals at 2:10.91.
Junior Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux City, Iowa/Unity Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 100 fly in 14th place. She finished with a time of 59.60.
In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Klara Oh (Kent, Wash.) was the fastest-Calvin swimmer in 12th place at 2:30.50. Oh was also the fastest Calvin swimmer in the 200 IM at 2:15.92
Sophomore Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the second-fastest time in school history twice on Saturday. VanHarn swam the fastest prelim time on the afternoon at 51.66. Her time was a NCAA qualifying B cut. VanHarn then tallied a time of 51.16 in second place. Sophomore Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) swam the 10th-fastest time in the 100 freestyle at 52.82.
Sophomore Nicole Langerak (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was the top Calvin diver on the 1-meter boards, with a score of 358.85.
The Knights will return to the pool in 2016 with Calvin hosting Alma on January 8. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.

For a second-straight day, the Calvin men broke a school record, this time in the 200 medley relay. The team of freshman Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon), senior Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and freshman Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) finished with a time of 1:31.54. The previous record was 1:31.67.
Senior Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, Va./Trinity Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 500 freestyle in eighth place. Meindertsma touched the wall at 4:39.26.
Sophomore Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) had the fifth-fastest time in the 200 backstroke prelims this morning at 1:52.91. Fish took fifth in the finals at 1:53.89.
Junior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) recorded a time of 50.49 in the 100 fly prelims on Saturday morning. Stoughton would take fourth place with a time of 50.78. In fifth place was Jared Britton with the seventh-fastest 100 fly time in school history at 51.03.
Johnson Cochran touched the wall in sixth place in the 200 breaststroke at 2:04.73. Cochran swam a 2:03.77 in the morning prelims. Junior Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) finished in ninth place with the fourth-fastest time in school history at 2:09.11.
In the 100 freestyle, Brandon Muma recorded the seventh-fastest time in school history at 46.44. Muma finished in sixth place at 46.58. Senior Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) had the eighth-fastest time in school history in fifth place at 46.55.
Sophomore Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) was the fastest Calvin swimmer in the 200 IM in eighth place at 1:57.36. Vincent swam a 1:56.64 in the prelims.
Sophomore Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) took a fourth-place finish on the 3-meter boards on Saturday with a score of 430.40.
The Knights will return to the pool in 2016 with Calvin hosting Alma on January 8. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.

ACHA ICE HOCKEY
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin ACHA men's ice hockey team pulled off a successful weekend sweep of rival Hope, defeating the Flying Dutchmen 2-1 Friday night in Grand Rapids and 5-0 Saturday in Holland.
Calvin is now 13-5-1 overall.
In Friday's win, freshman goaltender Alex Gross came up with 32 saves while junior Jordan Duncan scored an early goal off a feed from freshman Tommy Rietema to help pace the win.
In Saturday's win, senior John Conz scored the opening goal for the Knights and near the end of the first period, Duncan got loose for a breakaway shorthanded goal to put Calvin up 2-0.
Sophomore David Zwiers added another goal in the second period to put Calvin up 3-0.
In the third period, sophomore Ryan Bradley and freshman Sam Shaver scored to complete the 5-0 win.
Calvin now breaks until January 14 and 15 when it competes in a weekend series with Adrian.
