MEN'S SOCCER

KANSAS CITY, MO - The record-breaking season for the Calvin men's soccer team came to an end Friday night as the Knight suffered a 1-0 defeat to Loras College in NCAA III Tournament semifinal game at Swope Soccer Village.

Making its third appearance in the NCAA III Tournament semifinals, Calvin ends its season with an overall record of 24-1-1, marking the first 20-win campaign in program history.

The only goal of the game came off the foot of Loras junior forward Jonah Jacke in the 39th minute of play. The son of former Green Bay Packer placekicker Chris Jacke, Jonah Jacke whipped a left footed shot from the top of the box that curled up and over the leaping stab of Calvin senior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS). The scoring play began with a direct kick inside the Calvin end of the field that was deflected to the top of the of the box. Jacke was able to jump on the ball and score his first goal of the year. It only was just the sixth goal allowed by Calvin this fall.

Both teams had high quality scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes. Calvin junior Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) nearly scored in the opening two minutes and less than 10 minutes later, Calvin got Loras goalkeeper Jacob Peterson out of the box but could not get a solid touch on a wide-open Loras net.

The Duhawks (18-4-1) then rang the Calvin goalpost in the 14th minutes on a shot by Alex Bradley that hit the post and ricocheted just above the goal-line and then out of danger.

Calvin carried the play for the opening 20 minutes but Loras began to press the attack as the first half wore on, finally breaking through for the go-ahead goal.

Calvin finished the game with 10 corner kicks including five in each half. The Knights were unable to capitalize as the Loras defense led by sweeper back Sam Koenig stiffened as the game wore on.

"I first want to congratulate Loras College and their head coach Dan Rothert," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders after the match. "They are a very athletic team and a very committed team and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward."

Souders then spoke about his team's amazing year. "I'm just so proud of our guys. What a year," said Souders. "We set a new bench-mark for our program in terms of wins and getting to a Final Four is just fantastic. Above that, it's the type of young men that we have in our program. That's what it's all about. We're gutted tonight but God's goodness doesn't change and what matters to us and to our program hasn't changed at all."

Loras finished with a 10-8 shots at goal advantage. Giantsopoulos came up with five saves to help keep the game close.

Giantsopoulos was one of seven Calvin seniors who dressed in their final collegiate game Friday night. Also included in the senior class were Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Nolan DuBois (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian /HS), Austin Jorritsma (Redlands, CA/Arrowhead Christian Academy), Jon Filippini (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS).
