NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Calvin women's basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with an 85-48 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night.
Calvin trailed 22-21 after the first quarter but turned up the jets in the second quarter, outscoring the host Spartans 20-6 to lead 41-28 at halftime.
Calvin then outscored Manchester 31-7 in the third quarter and never looked back in claiming the victory.
Calvin received 18 points from sophomore Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) while sophomore Bre Luurtsema (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 14 points and junior Anna Timmer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) 12 points.
Calvin shot 46.6 percent from the field and forced Manchester into 34 turnovers.
"We came out a little sluggish in the first quarter and missed some layups that we should have made," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "The good thing is that we kept working hard, kept up the pressure on defense and the shots started to fall after that. It was a good team effort and a good win going into Thanksgiving break."
Calvin returns to action on December 2 when it travels to Kalamazoo for its MIAA opener. The Calvin/Kalamazoo game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 89, Manchester 77
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the year with a victory at Manchester University on Tuesday evening. The Knights defeated the Spartans, 89-77.

With the Knights leading, 53-52, Calvin would go on a 9-0 run behind seven points from senior Austin Parks (Niles, Mich./Niles).
