CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 3, 2015

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 0, Hope 0 (2OT)
By Paul Kluitenberg

The Calvin College Women's Soccer Team took on the Flying Dutch of Hope College today on a cold and rainy afternoon at Zuidema Field in front of a crowd that was 400 strong. Both teams looked to take sole possession of first place in the MIAA with a win this afternoon.
The Dutch came out strong with two shots, one of those on goal, in the first nine minutes of gameplay. Calvin quickly took control of the game taking three shots, two on goal, and three corners in the remaining 35 minutes of the first half and entered halftime with momentum.
Hope dominated the majority of the second half taking eight shots and continually pressuring the Knight defense. Hope's best opportunity to score came with 41 seconds left in the second half when Rachel Braginton (Grandville, Mich / Grandville) broke away from the Calvin defense and put a shot just over the cross bar. The Knights and Dutch headed to sudden death overtime.
Calvin began overtime with a hunger for victory. The Knights had the shot advantage over hope 6-0 over the two periods of overtime. Calvin's best opportunity of the evening came on a header by junior Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) that sailed just over the crossbar. In the 97th minute, Calvin fired a shot from Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) that was saved by Hope Goalkeeper Mary Clare Theis (East Langsing. MI / Haslett). Junior Carley Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) also came close with a shot in the second overtime. When the final whistle blew, the two teams had settled for a 0-0 double-overtime time.

The tie keeps the two teams locked in a tie for first place in the MIAA standings at 7-0-1 in league play. Calvin is 9-2-1 overall while Hope is 10-1-1 overall.
The Knights ended the afternoon with a 14-10 shot advantage and a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. Carly Veenstra, Kailey Jo, and Taylor Ten Harmsel finished the game with three shots each.
Calvin's defense had a strong outing only allowing three total shots on goal. Holly Ellerbroek (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) played well in the net, making two saves and recording her sixth shutout of the season.
Following the match, Head Coach Mark Recker felt satisfied with his Knights' performance saying "Hope has good players, and they are capable of putting the ball in the back of the net. We walk out of this satisfied with what we displayed on the field." He continued to praise his team stating that "when they buy in and compete with heart and passion and bring it to the field, we can compete with almost every team".
The Knights will take the field again Wed, Oct. 7 at Trine University at 4:00 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Kalamazoo 0 (OT)

The long spidery legs of sophomore Micah Beard allowed the sixth-ranked Calvin men's soccer team to slip past Kalamazoo 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon. Beard's goal with 2:21 left in the first overtime served as the game-winner as the Knights remain unbeaten on the year at 10-0-1 overall and on top of the MIAA standings at 6-0-0 in league play.

Calvin is now six points clear of Alma and Kalamazoo in the league standings and now has an unbeaten streak of 30 games MIAA regular season play.

Saturday's game featured a fight for first place as the visiting Hornets (5-4-1 overall, 4-2-0 MIAA) entered just three points behind Calvin in the league standings.

Playing in blustery playing conditions, Kalamazoo had Calvin back on its heels at times in the first half with the Knights dodging bullets on a pair of occasions.

Kalamazoo's first big scoring opportunity came in the sixth minute as Joshua Robison got behind the Calvin backline and flew a shot just over the crossbar from 10 yards out. In the 31st minute, Kalamazoo's Jordan Veillette beat Calvin goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) with a short chip but Calvin defender Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) was able to clear the ball off the goal-line with an acrobatic flick of his right foot.

Calvin then began to control the tempo in the second half, firing off seven shots. Calvin came close in the 83rd minute on a rip by freshman Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) that was deflected and went just wide of the goal.

In overtime, Calvin continued to pressure and finally broke through when freshman Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to send a cross to the far post to the 6-5 Beard. Beard headed the cross at Kalamazoo goalkeeper Griffin Hamel who made the initial save. Using his long reach, Beard was able to poke the rebound pass Hamel into the corner of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the year including his second game-winning goal of the week.

"It was a great win at home against a very strong Kalamazoo team," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "In the first half I don't think we played the style of game that we are capable of although I credit Kalamazoo for some of that. We started to get into more a rhythm in the second half, connected a few passes and got the goal when we needed it. It's a big three points for us in the standings but we have difficult test ahead so must remain focused."

Calvin finished the game with a 13-6 shots at goal advantage including 10-2 in the second half and overtime session.

Giantsopoulos was credited with one save in picking up his seventh shutout of the season. Hamel had five saves in goal for Kalamazoo.

Calvin will now prepare to travel to Albion next Tuesday for a 4 p.m. MIAA match. Calvin will carry a 31-game unbeaten streak dating back to last year into Tuesday's contest.

MEN'S GOLF

ADRIAN - Calvin's hold on first place in the MIAA standings vanished at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the Lenawee Country Club. Playing at the second-to-last MIAA Jamboree of the season, Calvin took fifth with a team score of 332 strokes, 25 strokes behind first place Hope.

The 25-stroke differential allows Hope to move into first place in the overall MIAA standings with just one league jamboree left to play. That jamboree will be hosted by Hope next Tuesday at the Wuskowhan Player's Club in West Olive. Calvin now sits in second place, 13 strokes behind Hope heading into Tuesday's MIAA finale.

Calvin's lone bright spot was the play of sophomore Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who finished second individually with a round of 75, one shot off the overall lead. VanScoyk leads the overall MIAA individual standings with an average of 73.5 strokes-per-round.

Sophomore John Van Noord (Troy/Oakland Christian HS) was the next best finisher for Calvin with an 84. Senior Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 85 while sophomore Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) and freshman Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had rounds of 88.
