CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 20, 2015

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Hope 0
By Paul Kluitenberg

Calvin College picked up its sixth win of the year Saturday afternoon as the Knights defeated rival Hope College 4-0 in front of nearly 1,000 fans at Calvin's Zuidema Field. The Knights are now 6-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAA. Calvin has won eight of its last 10 meetings against Hope.

The Knights came out strong with a goal in the eighth minute of play on a header from Senior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian). The goal came off off a beautiful free kick from freshman defender Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian). Pruis scored his third goal of the season and second of the game midway through the first half on a pass into the box from sophomore Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon).

The Knights defense played a gritty first half not allowing a single shot from Hope College. The stout defense allowed Calvin to maintain possession of the ball much of the first half.

Hope came out with a burst of energy in the second half maintaining possession and taking seven shots. However, a goal at 54:19 by senior Sam Hanover (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns) off a free kick from junior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) took the wind out of the sails of the Flying Dutchmen.

In the final moments of the game, Senior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, Ill / Timothy Christian) scored off a corner kick following a torrent of passes from Sophomore Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich. / Frankenmuth) and team scoring leader sophomore Micah Beard (Ostego, Mich. / Ostego).

Senior Niko Giantsopoulos had two saves in posting his fourth shutout of the season in goal for the Knights.

Calvin finished the game with a 19-9 shots at goal advantage.

Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders was pleased with his team's play.

"I think right from the start we came out strong," said Souders. "Taylor Pruis came up with two big goals right away and showed senior leadership. He was tuned in and ready to go and so were the rest of our guys. Hope is a very good team and I know we will be in for a battle when we travel to their place."

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Alma for a 4 p.m. match that will feature two teams currently holding shares of first place in the MIAA standings.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Adrian 0

ADRIAN - The Calvin women's soccer team stretched its win streak to six games and remained unbeaten in MIAA play with a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory at Adrian College Saturday afternoon.

Calvin peppered the Adrian net with shots throughout the game but could not break through in regulation time. Overtime proved to be a different story however as the Knights provided early pressure in the Adrian defensive end.

Calvin was quickly rewarded with a corner kick that was taken by senior Sydney Kinney (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Kinney's corner skipped through the top of the box untouched until it reached the feat of senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS). TenHarmsel made not mistake in collecting the corner and placing a shot in the lower left-hand corner of the goal to end the game just 1:14 into overtime.

The goal was TenHarmsel's third goal of the year and raised her career point total to 70, moving her into 16th place on the Calvin career points list.

Calvin finished with a 23-4 shots at goal advantage. Adrian goalkeeper Lexi Lewandowski had 13 saves to lead a determined Adrian defensive effort playing in front of a homecoming crowd. Calvin senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had one save in posting her third shutout victory of the season.

"We knew that Adrian would give us their best effort," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "To our credit, we kept our composure, kept pressing and two seniors found a way to make something happen in overtime. This was our fourth game in a span of a week and we found a way to get victories through that entire stretch. It hasn't been easy but now is not the time to let up. We need to keep our foot on the gas pedal and move forward."

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Saint Mary's for a 4 p.m. contest.

VOLLEYBALL

ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 2 Knights started Saturday upsetting the No. 1 Emory Eagles at the Emory National Invitational, 3-1. Calvin was looking to tie the season series with the Eagles after Emory defeated Calvin earlier this season at the Calvin College Labor Day Weekend Invitational, 3-1, on Sept. 4. The Knights improve to 9-2 in 2015, while Emory picks up its first loss of the season at 12-1.

"It was the first time I saw us really compete mentally and refuse to give in," said head coach Amber Warners. "We have worked on that for the past few weeks. We served aggressively and didn't let a few missed opportunities affect the next play. We saw a glimpse of what this team is capable of but still have a ways to go. We need to come out the next match with the same mentality"

In the first set, the Knights and Eagles exchanged blows for the first 12 point. With the set tied at six, the Knights went on a 6-3 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Eagles fought back to cut the Calvin lead to, 12-11. Calvin answered the Emory run with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to, 19-11. The Knights would not look back from there and won the set, 25-17. Senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) tallied seven kills in the first set.

The second set saw both teams coming out firing, with the set tied at seven, the Knights would create some separation with a 9-3 run. The Knights would go on to take the set, 25-19. The second set saw a balanced attack by the Knights, with five players having three or more kills, with sophomore Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/ Toronto District Christian HS) recording four kills in the set.

With their backs against the wall the No. 1 Eagles came away with a victory in the third set. Emory jumped out to an early, 7-1 lead, behind the serve of Sheridan Rice. Calvin would continue to chip away at the lead and tied the set at 11. The lead continued to change until Emory would go on a 4-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. Emory would go on to take the set, 25-18.

The Knights started the fourth set with a spark, taking early 5-2 and 8-4 leads. Emory would push back to tie the match at eight. Calvin would then go on a 3-0 run behind the serve of freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS). With Calvin leading, 16-13, the Knights looked to put away the Eagles with a 7-3 run. Freshman Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) put an end to the match from a kill from sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) to take the set, 25-18.

Maggie Kamp finished with a season-best 19 kills and 14 digs in the match, Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) finished the match with 13 kills, also a season high. Tessa Van Laare and Anna Kamp both tallied 10 kills. Jenna Lodewyk recorded a season-high 47 assists on Saturday afternoon. Tessa Van Laare had 2.5 blocks in the match and Keilahna Castillo finished with a season-high 21 digs.

The Calvin volleyball team fell to No. 9 Cal Lutheran in the final match of the Emory National Invitational, 3-2. The Knights are now 9-3 on the year and Cal Lutheran improves to 11-2.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early lead in the first set to start the match, Calvin tied the set at four but Cal Lutheran took the next point with a kill from Amanda Roberts and kept the lead the rest of the set, taking the first set, 25-18.

Calvin and Cal Lutheran began the second set exchanging the lead from point-to-point, until the Knights went on a 7-2 run to take an 18-13 lead. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) put away the set with a kill.

The third set saw Cal Lutheran strike back and take the third set, 25-20. Cal Lutheran finished the set on a 5-0 run.

The Knights flexed their muscles in the fourth set with Cal Lutheran trying to close out the match. With Calvin leading, 23-21, Cal Lutheran clawed back to tie the set at 23. Senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) gave the Knights the lead with a kill with the assist going to Jenna Lodewyk. Sophomore Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) finished the set in style with an ace.

In the fifth set, both teams saw the lead to continue to change hands. Maggie Kamp put the ball away twice to give Calvin a 14-13 and 15-14 leads, but Cal Lutheran fought back each time and finished the match off with an attack from Allie Eason, taking the set 17-15.

Maggie Kamp finished the match with 24 kills and 18 digs. Junior Laura Danoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) recorded 16 kills and 2.5 blocks. Jenna Lodewyk tallied 50 assists in the match and freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) finished with 23 digs.
