Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Wheaton;
Calvin Student-Athletes Named to 2014-15 MIAA Academic Honor Roll

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin women's soccer team opened its 2015 season in tough fashion, falling at 18th-ranked Wheaton College Tuesday night at Joe Bean Stadium.

Wheaton grabbed a 2-0 halftime advantage behind first half goals from Ally Witt and Kristin Rauh. Witt's goal came in the 15th minute while Rauh's goal came 10 minutes later as she headed in a cross in the Calvin box.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Wheaton took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Morgan Whitman.

Calvin countered with a goal by sophomore Emily VanVeldhuizen (Brookville, MD/Washington Christian Academy) as she redirected a loose ball into the Wheato net.

The host Thunder Struck back less than three minutes later with Madison Peebles scoring to give Wheaton a 4-1 lead.

Wheaton held a 15-8 shots at goal advantage including a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Holly Ellebroek (Holland/Holland Christian HS) came up with four saves in her debut as Calvin's starting goalkeeper.

Calvin is back in action on Friday with a game scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (CDT) at fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan.

MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL LIST

The 2014-15 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook and 134 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2014-15 academic year.
A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.
This year's Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 12 are from Calvin.
The 12 Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Beradino Guilfoyle (Baseball - Romeoville, IL/Plainfield East HS), Kayla Engelhard (women's basketball - Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS), Josh Ferguson (men's cross country/track and field - Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) Kate Ardinger (women's cross country/track and field - Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Sarah Danner (women's cross country/track and field - Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS), Kimby Penning (women's cross country/track and field - Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Nathan Terschak (men's swimming and diving) - St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy), Lexi Scott (women's swimming and diving - Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), Erik Holstege (men's track and field - Keswick, VA/Monticello HS), Amy Sybesma (women's track and field - Cerritos, CA/Valley Christian HS), Elise Biesboer (volleyball - Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and Stacey Kamp (volleyball - Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS).
