Softball Players Receive All-MIAA Honors / VanPutten Named to D3baseball.com Team of the Week / Baseball Players Receive All-MIAA Honors
SOFTBALL
Two members of the Calvin softball team have received All-MIAA honors. Junior Ashley Riemersma has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Lydia Gildea has been named to the All-MIAA second team.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Riemersma is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. A third baseman, Riemersma batted .522 in league play, finishing third in the MIAA batting race.
In league play, Riemersma was 14-for-24 at the plate with six doubles, two home runs, 18 runs batted in and 14 runs scored. She also collected seven walks and was hit by a pitch once, producing an on-base percentage of .593. In addition, she had a slugging percentage in league games of .783. She finished second in the MIAA in on-base percentage, tied for third in the MIAA in doubles, seventh in runs batted in and eighth in total bases (36) and slugging percentage.
A native of Gobles and a graduate of Gobles High School, Gildea is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the first time. She batted .432 in league games this spring. A catcher, Gildea had six doubles, one home run, 15 runs batted in, a slugging percentage of .636 and an on-base percentage of .491. She tied for third place in the MIAA in doubles and was ninth in on-base percentage.
BASEBALL
Calvin College senior Grant VanPutten has been named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week. VanPutten is receiving the honor for the first time.
He is the second player from Calvin this spring to receive the award as sophomore teammate Colton Wolfe was a D3baseball.com Team of the Week choice last month.
Van Putten, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), hit .654 (17-for-26), scored five runs and had four RBI in seven games for the Knights last week. He went 4-for-4 twice during a weekend series with MIAA champion Adrian that helped him secure the conference batting championship (.471 in conference play). He also set an MIAA record for hits in a season with 49 in conference play, led the league in runs scored with 32, and stole two bases to give him an MIAA career-record 62 steals.
VanPutten is just the second MIAA batting champion in Calvin baseball history. Calvin's Jon Mulder was the first, sharing the award with Jim Pobursky of Olivetin 1965 with a .425 batting average.
Calvin will host Hope in a first round MIAA Tournament game on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
MORE BASEBALL
Six members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are seniors Grant VanPutten, Peter Cupery and Nate Schepers and sophomore Colton Wolfe. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior Ben Wohl and sophomore Patrick Avila.
VanPutten, Cupery and Schepers are all native of Holland and graduates of Holland Christian High School. VanPutten is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third straight year while Cupery and Schepers are being so honored for the first time.
Calvin's starting centerfieler, VanPutten led the MIAA in batting average this spring with a .471 average. He is just the second player in Calvin baseball history to win an MIAA batting title and the first to do so since 1965. Over the course of the league season, he established a new MIAA single-season record for hits (49). He also led the MIAA in runs scored (32), was second in total bases (64) and was tied for third in stolen bases (14). He was recently named the MIAA Position Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
Cupery has served the Calvin baseball team in a variety of roles this spring, seeing time at third base, first base, designated hitter and pitcher. Cupery finished second in the MIAA batting race behind VanPutten with a .467 batting average. He finished second in the league in hits with 43, third in runs batted in (25) and fourth in runs scored (25). He also tied for second in the league in doubles (11) and tied for third in stolen bases (14) and total bases (62). He also appeared in six conference games as a pitcher but did not receive a decision.
Schepers meanwhile has been the ace of the Calvin pitching staff this spring, fashioning a 5-0 record in league with a 2.82 earned run average. He started in nine league games and was credited with four complete games and a pair of shutout victories. Schepers led the league in innings pitched (51.0) and games started and was tied for second in the MIAA in victories and was sixth in earned run average.
Wolfe served as Calvin's first baseman this spring while also seeing occassional duty at the DH spot. A native of Eaton Rapids and a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, Wolfe is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time.
Wolfe was named MIAA Position Player of the Week once during the season. He led the MIAA in home runs (6), was tied for fourth in doubles (10), tied for fifth in runs scored (21), tied for seventh in runs batted in (21), was tied for eighth in hits (32) and finished ninth in the MIAA batting race (.356).
Avila and Wohl are receiving All-MIAA second team accolades for the first time. The duo formed part of Calvin's infield this spring as Avila took over Calvin's starter at third base this spring while Wohl was Calvin's starting second baseman.
A native of Lakewood, California, Avila (Valley Christian High School) Avila batted .324 in league play with 20 runs batted in and 14 runs scored.
A native of Canton and a graduate of Plymouth High School, Wohl batted .347 in league play to rank 12th in the MIAA in batting average. Wohl scored 16 runs in league play and drove in 12.
Calvin finished second in the MIAA regular season standings with a 17-11 conference record. The Knights also hit the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive year and are 20-19 heading into a first round MIAA Tournament game against rival Hope Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field.
