The Calvin Knights baseball game went into the day on Saturday a game ahead of Kalamazoo and two games ahead of Hope. The Knights were looking to grab the second seed in the MIAA tournament for the second straight season. All that stood in their way was the first-place Bulldogs of Adrian College.

Calvin achieved its goal, splitting the twinbill while the Hornets lost twice and Hope split with Olivet.

The first game was a rough one for the Knights. After three scoreless innings, Adrian struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth.

The Knights responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring one on a sacrifice fly to right by sophomore Patrick Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS).

Adrian extended its lead by scoring one in the top of the fifth and then two more in the sixth, bringing the score to 6-1.

The game was still in reach for the Knights heading into the seventh, but that is where the wheels came off. Adrian scored seven runs in the top of the inning to take a commanding 13-1 lead.

Calvin did manage another run in the bottom of the frame through an RBI single by junior Justin VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS), but that was it for the game as Adrian took game one, 13-2.

Notable offensive performances in game one included senior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) going 2-4 with a triple, senior Peter Cupery (Holland/Holland Christian HS) reaching base in three out of his four at-bats, and freshman Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) getting 2 base knocks in 3 at-bats.

Mike Wieringa (Lombard, IL/Timothy Christian HS) took the loss on the hill for the Knights.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Knights got on top early. An RBI single by Avila helped the Knights take a 2-0 lead in the inning.

After Adrian retook the lead with a run in the second and three in the third, Calvin plated 4 in the bottom of the third. Avila hammered a 2 RBI double while sophomore Matt Kotva (Elkhart, IN/Concord HS) and Van Putten both had RBI singles, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of the Knights.

Calvin added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings and senior Austin Juza (St. Joseph/Lake Michigan Catholic HS) slammed the door in the seventh to give the Knights the 8-4 victory.

Offensively, the Knights were powered by a 3-4, 4 RBI performance by Avila. Additionally, Van Putten went 4-4 and Cupery went 2-3.

Freshman Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) earned the win in relief for Calvin, throwing 3 shutout innings while only allowing one hit.

Today was pretty typical of our season, said head coach John Rypel. Weve shown resiliency all season, especially after dropping the first four MIAA games to Kalamazoo and then two of our first three to Hope. That last victory against Hope really got us going and the same thing happened today. We got smoked in game one but then came back and put up 8 runs in game two. This team knows how to bounce back.

Calvin will host the first round of the MIAA tournament on Wednesday against Hope at 4 p.m.

Coach Rypel also discussed the keys to that key upcoming game. We definitely need to limit their run production early. Well be throwing Nate Schepers so its key that we get that early goose egg and then throw up some runs of our own and back him up.

Grant Van Putten broke the MIAA single-season record for hits today. He has 49 on the year after going 6-8 today. The previous record was 46 set by Jeremy Stephens of Alma in 2009. Additionally, with only a doubleheader between Albion and Alma to go in conference play, Van Putten holds the MIAA lead in batting average with a blistering .471. He is followed closely by fellow senior and Holland Christian Maroon Peter Cupery, who is batting .467.

Calvin and Albion faced off at Zuidema Field in the MIAA Tournament Final on Saturday. Both teams were looking for their first NCAA Tournament berth with the conference's qualifying bid on the line.

The Knights defeated the Britons 15-14 in a come-from-behind win during the regular season.

This game, much like the first meeting, was tight and hard-fought all the way through. Neither team saw an advantage of more than two goals, and in the end, it was the Britons avenging the regular season one-goal loss with a single-goal defeat of Calvin, 11-10.

The Britons netted the first two goals of the game, both from Ashley Glenn, to take a 2-0 lead less than five minutes in.

Calvin responded with three straight goals, two from junior Carolyn Forbes and another from senior Karissa Reed, to turn the tables and go ahead 3-2.

Glenn then scored two more, with Knights senior Paige Noordyke answering with one of her own, as the game headed into halftime tied 4-4.

Despite the tied score, Albion held the upper-hand in the opening period. The Britons outshot Calvin 12-8, held an 8-1 draw control advantage, and collected 34 ground balls to the Knights' 11. Calvin was just 6-for-11 on clear attempts, while Albion was 5-for-6.

After the break, the teams each scored a goal before the Britons scored two straight to take a 7-5 lead with 22:44 to go.

Senior Lindsey Ryskamp then netted a goal for Calvin, but it was quickly answered by Glenn.

Back-to-back tallies from Forbes and freshman Amanda Davio then knotted the contest at 8-8 midway through the second half.

After an Albion goal, Noordyke and Ryskamp scored two straight as Calvin saw its first lead since early in the first half at 10-9 with 11:50 remaining remaining in the second half.

Again, Glenn answered quickly, just 90 seconds later, to tie up the game at 10-10.

With 7:22 to go, Glenn found the back of the net one more time to put Albion on top 11-10. The goal proved to be the game winner as the Britons held the Knights to just one more shot in the remaining time.

The Knights were outshot 22-18 for the contest. Albion also held a 46-22 ground ball advantage and 20-3 draw control edge. Calvin completed just 11-of-20 clear attempts compared to 8-of-11 for the Britons.

Individually for the Knights, Forbes scored three goals and collected two ground balls, while Reed had two goals, two assists, and two ground balls. Noordyke and Ryskamp each added two goals, with Davio adding the final tally.

In goal, junior Corry Remy put in a fantastic performance, totaling eight saves.

For Albion, Glenn had seven goals and seven ground balls. Julie Wood contributed one goal, four assists, and four ground balls.
The Calvin defeat ends an amazing 10-game win streak for the Knights that began on April 1 and continued throughout the month.

The loss also ends the careers of Calvin seniors Karissa Reed, Paige Noordyke, Delaney Callahan, Erin Leegwater, Lindsey Ryskamp and Epiphany Donat.

Im proud of the season we had, said Calvin head womens lacrosse coach Blake Boehm of his squad that captured the schools first MIAA regular season title last month. We had a great group and we really meshed well during the latter half of the season. Its difficult to lose a close game like this one but we had a good run and gave it our best effort.

Calvin's season ends with a 12-6 overall record.
