CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 11, 2015

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 15, Albion 14

ALBION - The Calvin women's lacrosse team used nearly every second of Saturday's 60-minute game at Albion to secure an improbable 15-14 win.

Sophomore Amanda Davio scored a go-ahead goal with one second left in the first half and then scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left in the second half to lift the Knights to the stunning come-from-behind victory.

Calvin (6-5 overall, 3-0 MIAA)), trailed 14-10 with five minutes remaining but scored five unanswered goals including the game-winner by Davio to win the game and take sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.

"It was an incredible win but it was the result of our entire team," said Calvin women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "Every team member stuck with our game-plan and our defense started creating some opportunities into transition offense at the end."

Calvin never trailed in the first half and led 6-5 at halftime as Davio scored on a break through the right win in the closing seconds of the first half. The Britons (8-2 overall, 2-1 MIAA) turned up the tempo in the second half however with a four-goal spurt that gave Albion a 13-9 advantage.

"Albion has an extremely quick and athletic team," said Boehm. "Our primary focus was to cut down their speed and attack. We were on the defensive for big sections of this game but once we found a way to start possessing the ball, we started to regain the momentum."

The momentum began with a goal by sophomore Emily Cefaratti that cut Albion's lead down to 14-11 with 4:46 remaining. Davio then scored with three minutes left and again with 1:14 remaining to bring the Knights within one at 14-13. Cefaratti then won the ensuing draw control and was able to score just seven seconds later to tie the score at 14.

"We had to start winning more of the draws to get back in the gain," said Boehm. "That was obviously a big key for us possessing the ball."

Albion had a shot on Calvin's goal but junior goalkeeper Corry Remy came up with a clutch save with 35 seconds remaining - one of 13 she would collect on the day to keep the game tied. The Britons then turned the ball over and Davio was able to get loose near the Albion goal. With time ticking down, Davio was fouled and was awarded a free position attempt which she converted into the game-winning goal with only 10 seconds remaining.

The game-winning goal was the eighth of the game for Davio which marked a new career-high for the freshman from Okemos. Cefarrati also had five goals while junior Carolyn Forbes and freshman Madeline Baas had one goal apiece.

"Amanda (Davio) and Emily (Cefaratti) had huge games but they would be the first ones to tell you that their open shots were the results of all six of their teammates in the offensive zone playing their roles. Everyone did what they were supposed to do on offense with our attack and that created space for our goal scorers."

Boehm also mentioned that a collective team effort was critical to the team's defense. "Corry Remy came up with some huge saves for us but I can't say enough about the defenders around her," said Boehm. "Albion's offense is extremely explosive and it took everyone on defense to pitch in and they did that wonderfully. We still have some things to improve on but this was a great win for our team today."

Calvin finished with a 38-33 shots at goal advantage but Albion held a 21-10 edge in draw controls including 10-2 in the first half. Remy finished with a near .500 save percentage as she saved 13 of the 27 Albion shots on goal.

Cefarrati and senior Karissa Reed had four ground balls apiece while Reed caused four Albion turnovers.

Calvin will now prepare to travel to Saint Mary's for a conference game next Wednesday at 5 p.m.

In the opener, Calvin took a 3-0 lead behind run-scoring doubles by freshman Nate DeZwaan and senior Grant VanPutten and a fieling error by the host Britons.

Albion struck back with four runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead off of starter Ben Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle was able to settle in and keep the Britons off the scoreboard over the next two innings however.

Meanwhile Calvin (11-13 overall) scored twice in the top of fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Senior Peter Cupery and sophomore Patrick Avila put back-to-back doubles together to bring in the first run. Avila then moved to third and scored on a passed ball.

Calvin tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh, using three hits, an error and a wild pitch to take an 8-4 lead. Junior Jordan VanderWall had a run-scoring double while Cupery drove in a run on a groundout.

Junior Kyle Wasserberger tossed a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the win and gain the save while Guilfoyle picked up his third win of the season.

Calvin had nine hits in the win with Cupery, VanPutten, Avila, and DeZwaan all collecting two hits apiece.

In game two, Calvin scored three in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to give its pitching staff all the run support it would need.

Cupery started the game on the mound and allowed just one run in three innings. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate while driving in a run. Avila, senior Ben Wohl and DeZwaan all had two hits apiece with Wohl collecting an RBI double.

Freshman Ryan Stewart picked up the win in relief of Cupery with freshman Kyle Vens, senior Austin Juza and Wasserberger also coming on in relief.

"It was a total team effort this weekend," said Calvin head baseball coach John Rypel of his team that took three of four games in the weekend series with Albion. "We received great starts from all four of our starting pitchers this weekend and our bullpen did a great job. Offensively I thought we were very strong on the basepaths and stayed aggressive at the plate, executing on several occassions in two-strike counts."

Calvin stole nine bases in Saturday's doubleheader with VanPutten, Cupery, Wohl and Avila all stealing two bases apiece.

Calvin will host Illinois Tech next Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at Calvin slated to start at 2 p.m.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Saint Mary's 3

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women's tennis team completed a big week of conference play with an important 6-3 league win at Saint Mary's Saturday. The Knights are now 8-6 overall but more importantly tied for second in the league standings with Kalamazoo at 3-1.

The Knights dropped two of the three doubles points but fought back by claiming five of the six singles points to achieve the win.

"It's not the conventional way of winning a match but I'm proud of this team for fighting for this one and getting the result," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "Against a quality opponent, it's always difficult to dig back from a 2-1 hole after doubles but my team showed a lot of heart to come back. All the credit goes to the players on this team."

Senior Megan Visser and sophomore Clair Spoelhof did come up with a key point in doubles play however, winning a 9-8 decision including a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker.

Visser then kept the momentum going in singles winning 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Ellie Benzel won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, freshman Jessica Bouma won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, senior Ali Roode won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and freshman Kari Kroeze won 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

The win completed a week of conference victories as the Knights recorded a 5-4 triumph over Albion on Wednesday. A year ago, Calvin dropped conference matches to both Albion and Saint Mary's.

"It was a big week," said VanHaitsma. "We got wins over teams that finished ahead of us in the conference standings last year. The key was we continued to battle in every match, didn't back down and just kept on fighting for each other."

Calvin will host Kalamazoo on Tuesday in a conference match at 4 p.m.
