Calvin softball continued its training in Clermont, Florida, with a pair of games against Washington and Jefferson College and University of Scranton on Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights, dropping game one to the Presidents and game two to Royals, saw their season record move to 3-3.
In the first matchup against Washington and Jefferson, Calvin fell behind early and could not recover.
The Presidents opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning, plating four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Washington and Jefferson's lead grew to 6-0 with two more runs in the third.
Calvin responded with three runs in the fourth, beginning with a single from freshman Kaley Frank that brought senior Christie VanderMeer in to score. A triple from junior Ashley Riemersma brought Frank to home plate, and Riemersma then scored on a fielder's choice to bring the score to 6-3.
The Presidents plated an insurance run in the top of the fifth, then held Calvin scoreless over its remaining three offensive frames to down the Knights 7-3.
Frank led Calvin offensively in game one, going 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while
Riemersma was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
In the circle, freshman Madi Cornish took the loss, pitching 3.0 innings for the Knights.
Against Scranton, it was Calvin jumping out to a quick start.
A single by freshman Jessica Brasser brought in two runs in the bottom of the second.
The Knights then scored again in the third, as junior Alyssa Bryan plated a run with a single, which was followed up by a double from sophomore Maddie Teune that brought home two more.
After three, Calvin led 5-0.
The Royals responded in the fourth, plating four runs to cut their deficit to 5-4.
One inning later, Scranton scored a pair of unearned runs to take the lead 6-5.
The Royals pitching then held the Knights to just one hit in the final three innings, all-the-while Scranton's offense tallied three insurance runs.
Despite the early lead, Calvin fell to the Royals 9-5 in the Knights' second game of the day.
Bryan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Brasser went 2-for-4 with two RBI. VanderMeer also added two hits in four at bats.
Freshman Makela Chapman took the loss in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings.
"We're doing really good things, but we haven't quite yet put together that great offensive night, great defensive night, and great pitching night," said head coach Tim Syrek. "We feel like we're getting closer, and that's what we're down here for - to find out where we need to improve and aggressively attack it through practice. We're not excited about losing two, but we're excited that our young kids are doing good things and our older kids are being the leaders they need to be."
Calvin falls to 3-3 with the pair of losses.
Looking to rebound, the Knights play Indiana Tech in their lone contest on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
BASEBALL
UW-Stevens Point 4, Calvin 0
By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin baseball team faced off against No.13 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday afternoon in Auburndale, Florida. The game was the final contest on the Knights Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State.
The Knights, unable to capitalize on early opportunities, fell 4-0 in a tough loss to the Pointers.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring one run on a single to left field, then adding another on a double to right.
Calvin looked to answer in the bottom of the first. The Knights put their first two batters on base. A steal by senior Grant VanPutten then put him at third with no outs, but a strikeout, runner caught stolen, and strikeout in quick succession ended Calvin's scoring chance.
A solo home run for the Pointers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Calvin ended the UWSP streak of retiring 11 straight Knights batters with a single to centerfield. But, the hit was followed by another strikeout, and the Pointers continued to hold Calvin scoreless.
After three more scoreless innings, Wisconsin-Stevens Point brought in another run in the top of the ninth to move ahead 4-0.
Calvin responded by putting two runners on base with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but a pair of fly-outs ended the ball game as the Pointers closed out a 4-0 win over the Knights.
Sophomore Matt Kotva went 2-for-3 to lead Calvin's offense. VanPutten and sophomores Patrick Avila and Colton Wolfe each added one hit.
On the mound, senior Nate Schepers took the loss. The Knights did see strong pitching from three freshman in middle relief, as Ryan Stewart, Kyle Vens, and Mike Wieringa all pitched at least two innings for Calvin.
"Our pitching did a fantastic job today. We pitched a lot of young guys, threw a lot of different guys at them and changed arm angles and gave them different looks," said head coach John Rypel. "Kalamazoo is a good team to start off (the MIAA schedule) with. Our guys are excited - they felt good about the trip, although we didn't win as many games as we'd like, I think it's going to prepare us for the MIAA."
Calvin now looks forward to the beginning of conference play on Friday, when the Knights host Kalamazoo College. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. Calvin will then travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday to complete the home-and-home series.
