KENOSHA, WISC - The top-ranked Calvin Knights move on to the third round of the NCAA III Tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays of Elmhurst College. It took four sets with the scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, for the Knights to take this victory.

The Knights advance to play Carthage Saturday at 8pm EST.

The Knights (29-3) started off the match slowly as the Blue Jays took an early lead in the first set and held that lead almost throughout the whole game. About midway through the set the Knights took over the first game with a score of 25-22. "We started off a little slow but when we really got into rhythm and really started playing with a lot more confidence." Said Coach Warners.

In the second set it was all Knights. They had 16 kills with a .400 hitting percentage. They were firing on all cylinders after coming back to win the first and with the momentum on their side they took the second set rather easily from the Blue Jays.

The third set saw the Blue Jays come out with the intensity they did in the first and took a quick lead. The Knights rallied back however behind the serving of Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who gave the Knights four straight points to bring the Knights up 7-4. The match was back-and-forth till the end of the set where Calvin made a couple of costly service errors which led to the Elmhurst victory in extra points 27-25 to force a forth set.

The fourth set was very close as well but the Knights came up on top with a 25-21 victory. The defense of the Blue Jays seemed to bother the Calvin hitters forcing a lot of scrappy plays for the Knights back row.

Elmhurst was a menace defensively for the Knights with eight total team blocks as it put a ton of pressure on Calvin's offense. "Their block was massive and really frustrated us as hitters. We did a good job of working around it but we can always do better." said Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) who led the Knights with 17 kills. Maggie Kamp was right behind her with 16 kills and she also tacked on 16 digs. Senior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawka Penn HS) added 10 kills from the middle as well.

The serving was also a key to this victory for the Knights they had nine service aces with only six errors. Also the Knights serve receive was on through out the entire match. Defensively Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) led Calvin with 23 digs. Freshman Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had 53 assists and 11 digs.

After the match Coach Warners had high praise for the Elmhurst team and the way the Blue Jays played in the match. "Our program doesn't take for granted any wins and we are grateful to walk away with a win tonight especially in this region. It's going to be a battle tomorrow and we will have to be ready."

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 0, Rose-Hulman 0 (Calvin wins PKs 4-3)

By Mark DeHaan

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team faced off with the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Friday evening in an NCAA Tournament first round matchup.

For the second straight game, the Knights advanced to penalty kicks, and for the second straight game, Calvin survived, outscoring Rose-Hulman 4-3 in five penalty kick rounds after playing 110 scoreless minutes.

In the opening minutes of the game, the Knights held the majority of the possession. Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) picked up in the NCAA Tournament where he left off the regular season, creating a number of opportunities on goal, including a header that was just over the crossbar.

Vegter also had chances in the 16th minute and 34th minute, but each time the Calvin threat was met by Rose-Hulman keeper Drew Miller.

At the end of the the first half, a corner kick by the Fightin' Engineers resulted in a couple shots on goal. Calvin's defense was able to block all of the opportunities, however, and at the break, the game was tied 0-0.

The Knights outshot the Fightin' Engineers 8-4 at the break.

In the second half, Calvin created a few more chances.

In the 60th minute, junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a header on frame that was cleared off the line by a Rose-Hulman defender.

Minutes later, a long ball from junior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) sent Pruis in toward goal. Reaching the ball just before the keeper, Pruis chipped a shot toward goal that deflected off the post and out of bounds as the game stayed scoreless.

Despite a number of other chances, neither defense relinquished any strong scoring opportunities, and the game headed to overtime.

In the first overtime, sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had a shot in the 97th minute that was on frame but right at the keeper.

After an eventless second overtime period, for the second game in a row, Calvin's fate would be decided by a penalty kick shootout.

Both goalies stood tall in the shootout, and after a fifth spot attempt from Rose-Hulman was blocked by junior Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, ON/St. Augustine Catholic HS), Hooker scored the winning kick to send the Knights into the second round.

Calvin outshot the Fightin' Engineers 23-8 over 110 minutes of play. The Knights also held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Miller made six saves for Rose-Hulman while Giantsopoulos made three for the Knights.

"When it gets to penalty kicks, anyone can win," said Rose-Hulman head coach Sean Helliwell. "They've got a very good team, very athletic. I couldn't be more proud of my guys. I thought we gave 100% effort, I thought we battled, and that's all you can ask as a coach."

"Rose-Hulman came out very disciplined, very dedicated to their method of play, and they frustrated us for 110 minutes," said Calvin head coach Ryan Souders. "When you get to the tournament, it's survive and advance. Niko was able to come up with a couple of big saves, and our guys finished their penalty kicks. There are no easy games in the tournament, and we just have to focus on us. Eat well, get some sleep, and come out and be ready to fight again tomorrow."

The Knights advance to second round play where they will face Ohio Wesleyan University, who defeated Penn State-Behrend 3-2 in overtime in the second game of the night.

The second round contest will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. at Hope College's Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Calvin has already faced Ohio Wesleyan once this season, defeating the Battling Bishops 2-1 in overtime of the first game of the year.
