MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Hope 0

HOLLAND - The nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team took firm control of the MIAA title race with a 2-0 victory over rival Hope Saturday night.

Playing in front of a standing-room only crowd of nearly 3,000 fans at Hope's Van Andel Stadium, Calvin scored two second-half goals to seal the win.

Ranked 12th nationally, the Knights are now 13-2-0 overall and 10-0-0 in the MIAA. With four MIAA regular season games remaining, Calvin is nine points clear of second place Hope and can clinch a share of its eighth straight MIAA regular season crown with a win in any of its final four remaining league contests.

With its victory Saturday night, Calvin also recorded its ninth shutout victory of the season including its third straight. The Knights have now outscored MIAA opponents 35-2 this fall.

Although neither team scored in the first half, both teams had high-quality chances. Calvin senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) came close twice, ripping a shot from the left side of the box in the fourth minute of the game that was saved by Hope goalkeeper Ethan Beswick and later ringing a shot off the goalpost. Calvin sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also had a header on the break off a feed from Vegter that Beswick made an acrobatic save on.

With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Hope broke loose on a long chip into the Calvin end that forward Cameron Dice was able to collect. Dice broke free through the right side of the box but sent a shot wide of the Calvin goal.

In the second half, Calvin upped its ball possession and broke through for a goal with 27:58 remaining as senior Reed Bowden (Uxbridge, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) sent a throw-in into the Hope box that senior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) was able to collect. Broekhuizen whirled and sent a cross that deflected off the Hope defense right to the feet of Vegter. Vegter made no mistake in whipping in a low-hard shot into the back of the net for his 18th goal of the season and the 62nd of his career.

In the 72nd minute, sophomore Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) teamed up with Vegter on a fast-break goal. VanDoorne was able to beat a defender to the ball near midfield with a toe-poke pass to Vegter who quickly created a 2-on-1 situation with the Hope backline. Vegter placed a well-placed ball back to the feet of VanDoorne at the top of the box and with a quick one-touch and a left-footed shot, VanDoorne put the ball into the right hand corner of the net for a 2-0 Calvin lead.

Calvin's defense continued to hold strong down the stretch with junior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, ON/St. Augustine Catholic HS) recording one save in gaining the shutout victory.

"I think this win was about commitment for our team," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "In the first half, Hope stuck to their game plan and did a great job. In the second half, we remained committed to our passing game and finding space up front and Travis and Isky got some very nice second half goals. Hope has a very good team and a win against them anywhere is a huge accomplishment. To get a win against them with an atmosphere like tonight is even bigger."

Calvin finished the game with a 15-5 shots at goal advantage.

The Knights will host Adrian on Tuesday at Zuidema Field at 4 p.m.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

OSHKOSH, WI - The Calvin women's cross country teams competed at the power-packed UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday. Competing in a team filled with nationally-ranked teams, the 14th-ranked Calvin women's team took sixth with 203 points.

Grand Valley State took first place with 40 points. The field also included top-ranked (Division III) Johns Hopkins which placed third (106 points) and fourth-ranked MIT (Division III) which placed fourth (127 points).

Calvin placed three runners in the top 35 led by sophomore Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS) who placed seventh individually with a time of 21:14. Sophomore Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory HS) was 16th (21:41) and senior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) 33rd (22:03).

Rounding out Calvin's top severn were senior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 73rd (22:39), sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) 84th (22:47), sophomore Jessie Mulder (Holland/Holland Christian HS) 90th (22:52) and senior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) 91st (22:52).

"I thought we had a really good performance," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Cassie Vince ran with the front-runners and Lauren Strohbehn was right in the thick of it giving us a real nice one-two punch up front. Sarah Danner was very steady and solid and I though the rest of our pack ran very well together. We are excited about this performance. This is definitely something for our team to build on."

Calvin will send runners both the Lansing Community College Invitational and the Eastern Michigan Invitational on October 24.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

OSHKOSH, WI - Racing in the power-packed UW-Oshkosh Invitational, the 24th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team took 12th with 332 points.

Top-ranked North Central (Division III) took first place with 36 points.

Calvin placed three runners in the top 65 led by sophomore Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) who placed 59th in 25:30 with senior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) right behind in 62nd in 25:31. Senior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) also kep pace, placing 64th in 25:33.

Calvin then had a solid pack of four led by junior Andre Otte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 112th (25:57), freshman Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 113th (25:57), senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) in 114th (25:58) and junior Jeff Meitler (Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in 116th (25:58).

"We lacked a little bit of the up-front punch that we needed to make a run up the standings," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "I think the encouraging thing for our team is that our pack in the back was very good and steady. Andre Otte led that pack and Andrew Rylaarsdam continues to be a solid fifth man for us. We've got a few of our runners that running a bit tired right now but I think we'll start to reel that guys back in the next few weeks. If we do that, we could do some fun things as a team over the next few weeks."

Calvin will send runners both the Lansing Community College Invitational and the Eastern Michigan Invitational on October 24.
