WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

KALAMAZOO - The 10th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team dominated the MIAA field on Saturday at the MIAA Jamboree, cruising to a first place total of 20 points. Calvin finished 39 points ahead of 20th-ranked Hope as the Flying Dutch took second.

Calvin took the top three spots and placed five in the top eight to run away with the win. Sophomore Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS) was the race winner, clocking in with a time of 22:29 while sophomore teammate Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory) was second (22:36) and senior teammate Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) third (22:42).

Also finishing in the top 10 were senior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) in sixth (23:31) and senior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in eighth (23:39).

Rounding out Calvin's top seven were sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in 11th (23:51) and senior Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) in 13th (24:12).

"It was a good day for our team," said Calvin head women's cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Cassie Vince ran a real tough race and Lauren Strohbehn and Sara Danner worked very nicely together to give us a really nice punch up front. The rest of our top seven filled in the holes where we needed them too. One thing I would like to see improvement is to continue to narrow the time gap in the middle of our pack. I think this team will do that as the season continues. Overall I am very pleased with what I saw today."

Calvin will now prepare to compete at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational next Friday with several nationally-ranked teams from around the Midwest expected to compete.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

KALAMAZOO - The 23rd-ranked Calvin men's cross country team pulled away for a convincing first place win at the MIAA Jamboree on Saturday morning in Kalamazoo, posting a first place team score of 29 points.

Calvin placed five runners in the top 11 including four in the top seven to seal the win.

Calvin sophomore Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) was the race winner as he led from start-to-finish. Nowicki was challenged in the final 1000 meters by Adrian's Thomas Windle but used a strong kick down the final stretch to win by a 10-second margin with Nowicki clocking in at 25:35 and Windle at 25:45.

Freshman Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was Calvin's number-two finisher, placing fourth in a time of 26:20.

Junior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) was sixth in 26:26 and senior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was seventh in 26:28. Junior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville HS) was 11th in 26:35, junior Andre Otte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 13th (26:38) and junior Jonathan Gingrich (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty HS) was 14th (26:43) to round out Calvin's top seven.

"I thought Zac Nowicki took another step forward and ran a great race," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "This was not an easy course. It had two big hills and it made Zac and the rest of our guys dig deep. Zac was really pushed by Thomas Windle near the end and he responded very well. It's a good confidence booster for Zac and a race that he will learn from."

Diemer was also pleased with the break-out performance by Rylaarsdam. "Andrew ran a very strong race," said Diemer. "He has really come on and continues to impress. He has a lot of potential and he showed that today."

According to Diemer, Saturday's race provided learning moments for the entire team. "This was a tough race and our pack got broken up some and at times, we had difficulty finding each other and we need to improve on that," said Diemer. "That's part of the learning process and I think our team will learn from today's race. The bottom line is that we took first place at our first conference race which was our immediate goal for today."

Calvin will now prepare to compete at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational next Friday which will include several nationally-ranked teams from around the Midwest.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Kalamazoo 0

The Calvin women's soccer team hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon, looking to keep its conference win streak intact.

With a pair of goals from sophomore Allie Corp (Livonia/Stevenson HS), the Knights did just that, scoring a goal in each half as Calvin defeated the Hornets 2-0 to improve to 3-3 in the MIAA.
Despite being outshot by Kalamazoo 7-5 in the opening period, it was Calvin taking a lead into the break.

In the 19th minute, Corp put the Knights on the board. Junior Sydney Kinney (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS) played a ball into the box that ran through the Kalamazoo defense and across the face of goal to a waiting Corp, who tapped it in.

A minute later, Kalamazoo nearly equalized as Katie Sorenson put a shot top-shelf that was just tapped over the bar by freshman keeper Jenna Shelton (Bloomfield Hills/Troy Intersect HS).

The Knights then took the one goal lead into halftime, as well as a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Out of the break, Calvin had a great opportunity in the 69th minute. Junior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) received a well-played ball behind the Kalamazoo defense. Going one-on-one with the keeper, TenHarmsel's shot was just wide of frame, and Calvin's lead remained 1-0.

In the 85th minute, Calvin doubled its lead as Corp doubled her goal tally. TenHarmsel received a cross and laid the ball off at the top of the box for Corp. Taking a touch to her right, Corp blasted a shot past the Hornets keeper and into the right side of the net for a Knights 2-0 lead.

In the final five minutes, Calvin held the Hornets without a shot, and the Knights claimed their third straight win and third straight shutout.

For the game, Kalamazoo outshot the Knights 14-12 while Calvin held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Shelton made three saves in net for Calvin to earn the clean sheet.

"I think the first three games, there was a mindset that just moving the ball or being on the field was going to generate a positive outcome. Over the last three games, we've been pushing for more complete team movement, both defensively and offensively," said head coach Mark Recker. "What you see here is the growth of a young team learning that it has to come every game. Our two away games were the start of more proactive play, and today, I don't think we necessarily played at the same level with have in the two previous games, but we took good advantage of the opportunities we were given."

The Knights improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA after starting 0-3 in the league, while Kalamazoo moves to 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.

Calvin now looks forward to Tuesday when it travels to Olivet College. The Knights and Comets are set to kickoff at 4:00 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Adrian 0

ADRIAN - The Calvin men's soccer team stretched its win streak to six games and remained unbeaten in MIAA play with a 3-0 road win at Adrian College Saturday afternoon.

The Knights are now 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA, resting on top of the league table.

Calvin dominated play in Saturday's game at Adrian's Docking Stadium, outshooting the Bulldogs 22-6 including 15-1 in the first half.

Calvin gained the early momentum 8:33 into the match as junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) pounced on an Adrian turnover and rifled in a shot for his third goal of the season.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Calvin then doubled its lead in the second half as freshman Mitch Stark (South Lyon/South Lyon HS) scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.

Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) closed out the scoring with a goal in the 87th minute on a feed by junior Sam Hanover (Saint Johns/Saint Johns HS). The goal was the eighth of the year for Vegter including the 52nd of his collegiate career. Vegter now has 124 career points and is tied with Joel Veldhouse for third place on the Calvin career points list.

Senior Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bishop Foley HS) had a pair of saves in recording his first shutout victory of the season.

"I thought we again moved the ball well and played well as a team," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Adrian is a difficult place to place. Any time you can come down here and go back home with three points it's a happy ride home."

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Trine at Zuidema Field at 4 p.m.
