Calvin Sending Five to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field team will be sending five individuals to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week in in Delaware, Ohio, on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Representing the Calvin men's team will be senior Ben de Waal Malefyt and junior Steven Haagsma. Representing the Calvin women's team will be seniors Nicole Michmerhuizen and Hilary Banning and junior Sarah Danner.

The following are capsules of the five individuals competing for Calvin:

MEN'S TEAM

BEN DE WAAL MALEFYT - (MIDLAND PARK, NJ/EASTER CHRISTIAN HS) - de Waal Malefyt will be making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He will compete in the discus where he is seeded 19th with a throw of 163-5. Earlier this spring he was the MIAA champion in the discus and earned a spot on the All-MIAA men's track and field team.

STEVEN HAAGSMA - (GRANDVILLE/CALVIN CHRISTIAN HS) - Haagsma will be making his second consecutive trip to the outdoor national meet and will again compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Haagsma is seeded 11th in the race with a time of 9:05.47. A year ago Haagsma competed in the prelims of the steeplechase but did not advance. Earlier this month he was the MIAA runner-up in the steeplechase at the conference championship meet at Alma College.

WOMEN'S TEAM

SARAH DANNER - (WATKINS GLEN, NY/CHARLES DICKERSON HS) - Danner will be making her first appearance at the national meet. She will compete in the 10,000 meters where she is seeded 14th with a time of 35:56.61. At the MIAA Championships earlier this month, she was the league runner-up in the 5,000 meters.

HILARY BANNING - (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) - Banning will be making her first appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the triple jump where she is seeded ninth (39-3.75). She is the school record holder in the triple jump. At the MIAA Championships, she captured league titles in the long jump and triple jump and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third straight year.

NICOLE MICHMERHUIZEN - (Holland/Holland Christian HS) - Michmerhuizen will be making her third consecutive appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. A four-time NCAA III All-American in track and field, Michmerhuizen will compete in the 10,000 meters where she is seeded third (35:35.15) and in the 5,000 meters where she is seeded fourth (16:36.36). Last year, she captured the national title in the 10,000 meters and later placed 12th in the 5,000 meters. This past March, she took second in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year and then placed fourth in the 3,000 meters to claim All-America honors in both events. At the MIAA Championships this spring, she was the league champion in the 10,000 meters, winning the race in an league record time of 35:35.15. She is the Calvin record holder in both the 10,000 and 5,000 meter runs.
