Vlot and Avila Named to NFCA Division III All-Central Region Softball Teams;
Track and Field Teams Compete at GVSU Last-Chance Meets - Banning Breaks Triple Jump Record
SOFTBALL
Two members of the Calvin softball team have received NFCA Division III All-Central Region honors. Freshman Cassidy Vlot has been named to the NFCA Division III All-Central Region second team while senior Lina Avila has been named to the third team.
Vlot is from Chowchilla, California. She is a graduate of Chowchilla High School. She was a dual threat at the plate and in the pitcher's circle this spring. As a pitcher, she was 10-7 in the circle with a 2.30 earned run average. She had 12 complete games, three shutouts and 78 strikeouts while walking just 21.
At the plate she batted .370 with 10 doubles, two home runs and 25 runs batted in. Her doubles total matches the ninth-best single-season total in Calvin history. She also spent time at first base and between the pitcher's circle and first base, compiled a fielding percentage of .983.
Avila is from Lakewood, California. She is a graduate of Valley Christian High School. She is receiving all-region honors for the third consecutive year. Avila split time betwen first base, designated player and occassionally the pitcher's circle this spring.
She led Calvin in hitting with a .385 batting average while blasting nine home runs to go with five doubles and and one triple for a slugging percentage of .664. She had 47 hits which ranks as the ninth-best single-season total in Calvin softball history. She also had a team-leading 33 runs batted in which ranks third on the Calvin single-season list. Her home run total is the third best. She is the Calvin career leader in home runs (34), runs batted in (131) and total bases (294) and ranks fourth on the Calvin career list in hits (151) and is second in doubles (33).
Calvin finished the year with an overall record of 22-15. The Knights finished fourth in the MIAA regular season standings and then reached the MIAA Tournament and compiled a 20-win season for the first time since 2005.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's track and field team competed at a pair of last-chance meets hosted by Grand Valley State this weekend.
On Friday night, senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) had a season-best time of 3:57.54 that was good for fifth place in the 1,500 meters. Senior Ben de Waal Malefyt (Midland Park, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was also seventh in the discus with a throw of 152-11.
On Saturday, junior Erik Holstege (Keswick, VA/Monticello HS) had a season-best time of 14.79 in the 110 high hurdles. Sophomore Lucas Wolters (Vincennes, IN/South Knox HS) was sixth in the pole vault (14-11). Ben de Waal Malefyt also bumped up his weekend performance in the discus, tossing a throw of 157-4.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin women's track and field team competed at a pair of last-chance meets hosted by Grand Valley State this weekend.
Highlighting the weekend was the performance of senior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) who captured the triple jump on Saturday with a school record leap of 39-3 3/4, breaking the previous mark of 39-1 1/4 set by Julie Bratt in 2009. Banning's jump places her fifth on the NCAA III qualification list.
In the women's javelin on Saturday, senior Lauren Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a season-best throw of 133-2 that was good for second place.
On Friday night, senior Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) took first place in the 200 meters with a time of 25.52. Senior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) was second in the 800 meters (2:17.76) while senior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) was third (2:18.10).
In the 5,000 meters, senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took first in a time of 16:42.74 while freshman Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS) was fourth (17:30.33) and junior Sarah Danner (Watkin Glens, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) was fifth (17:41.97).
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) had a season-best time of 11:07.42 as did junior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a time of 11:10.87.
