Track and Field Athletes Compete at Last-Chance Meets;
Men's Basketball Prepares for NCAA III Tournament Competition/Dan Stout's Summer Journey to Honduras Featured Online
TRACK AND FIELD
A small group of Calvin track and field athletes are competing at last-chance indoor meets this weekend.
At the North Central College pentathlon competition today in Naperville, Illinois, two members of the Calvin women's track and field team fared well as freshman Bethany Van Eck and junior Kelley Tuinenga competed.
Van Eck posted a career-best score of 3,110 points which places her 31st on the NCAA III indoor list in the event.
Van Eck opened the event by running 9.48 in the 60 meter hurdles and followed with a jump of 5-1 in the high jump and a throw of 28-3 in the shot put. She then went 16-4 1/2 in the long jump and ran 2:35.51 in the 800 meters.
Tuinenga ran 10.42 in the 60 meter hurdles, jumped 5-0 in the high jump, threw the shot 27-6 1/4 in the shot, went 14-1 1/4 in the long jjmp and 2:29.85 in the 800 meters.
Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Friday is sophomore Eric Jipping in the men's shot put at a meet hosted by Carthage College.
On Saturday, juniors Sarah Danner and Paige McGahan will compete in the women's 5,000 meters at a meet hosted by UW-Stevens Point while David Vande Bunte and Phil Spitzer will compete in the men's 5,000 meters at the same meet.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin men's basketball team will open NCAA III Tournament play Friday night against Wittenberg University at 6:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be played on the campus of Washington University of St. Louis.
