MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Olivet 2 (OT)
Story by Brett Venhuizen
The men's soccer team hosted the Comets of Olivet in a key MIAA match at Zuidema Field on Saturday afternoon. It was a hard fought win for the Knights who needed extra time to put away the Comets. The Knights ended up defending their home turf with a 3-2 overtime win.
After this game Calvin improves to 10-5-0 overall and 9-2-0 in the MIAA, while Olivet drops to a 9-7-1 overall and 7-4-0 in league play. This win keeps the Knights in sole possession of first place in MIAA standings with 27
points.
Fred Smyser of Olivet drew first blood in the match with a goal off of a Jared Wilson-Santos assist. Six minutes later the Knights would get on the board with a volley shot from Junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville; Unity Christian) off of two great passes from Zach Willis (Wyoming; Unity Christian) and Taylor Pruis ( Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian).
In the second half, Vegter opened up a lead for the Knights with another goal off of a free kick from Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL; Timothy Christian) at about the half field mark. The ball was sent in off of a header from Vegter past the keeper for the goal. The Comets were playing down a man at this point after an Olivet player received his second yellow card.
In the 80th minute the Comets would come up with the equalizer in the form of Gregory Petty off of a feed from Fred Smyser. Ninety minutes was not enough to decide this one though as the game was sent into overtime.
In overtime the Knights came out with energy and only needed a minute and twenty nine seconds to put one in the back of the net. The winner was set up by a great lead pass by Zach Willis to Vegter in front of the goal to complete his hat trick.
The Knights led the match with 17 shots compared to Olivet's 6. The game was physical with a combined 23 fouls and 10 cards given out by the officials.
"We showed a lot of resilience in the game coming back from a deficit to get the win and the three points," said Knights Head Coach Ryan Souders. "This was an all-around team win, every guy on this team had an impact. All 26 players if they played 91 minutes or not at all were a big part of this win for us."
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday the 29th away at Kalamazoo, game time is 4 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Adrian 1, Calvin 0
ADRIAN - A sudden strike by Sam Barker stunned the Calvin women's soccer team and snapped a 12-game unbeaten streak by the Knights.
A senior striker for Adrian, Barker scored with 8:42 left in regulation to lift the host Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Calvin. The Adrian win knocks Calvin out of first place in the MIAA standings as Hope moves three point ahead of Calvin in the league table. Hope has played one additional league game than Calvin. The Knights could still control their own destiny for at least a share of the league title but would need to win their remaining three league games including a November 4 home game against Hope.
Calvin (13-2-2 overall, 10-2-1 MIAA) controlled the tempo for most of the game at Adrian's Docking Stadium, outshooting the host Bulldogs (12-5-0 overall, 10-4-0 MIAA) 16-7 but the Knights could not find the back of the net.
Calvin threatened on a number of occassions. The most dangerous chance of the first half for Calvin came in the 33rd minute as senior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) ripped a blast headed for the top corner only to see Adrian Taylor Roce bat the ball out of bounds with a leaping save.
In the second half, Calvin senior Heidi Scholten (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) cranked a shot that hit the crossbar with 10:05 left on the block.
Moments later, Adrian began a counter-attack through the middle led by returning MIAA MVP Erin Weide who found the feet of Barker. Barker took a few dribbles and then ripped a shot from the 10-yard line past Calvin goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) for the eventual game-winner.
Calvin threated in the closing minutes and had a shot by senior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) fly just wide on what would prove to be the final play of the game.
Calvin will now prepare for its final slate of regular season games. The Knights will host Kalamazoo next Wednesday at 4 p.m. followed by a trip to Olivet next Saturday (noon kick). The regular season finale with Hope on November 4 is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
In addition, the four-team MIAA Tournament has already been set with Calvin, Hope, Adrian and Alma all qualifying. The only thing left to determine is the MIAA regular season champion and the seeding for the upcoming tournament.
