CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 5, 2013
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Hope 1
By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Holland on Saturday to face the Flying Dutch of Hope College. In the final game of the first half of the conference schedule, the Knights claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Van Andel Stadium behind a pair of goals from sophomore Paige Capel.
Hope took the lead in the first half from freshman Sarah Fazio, who collected the ball in the box off of a rebound and put it into the back of the net.
Hope took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The first half was very defensive, with Hope holding a 3-2 advantage in shots at the break.
After halftime, the defenses began to open up, and Calvin equalized in the 52nd minute. Paige Capel made a run into the center of the box, and with a strong, left-footed shot, put the ball top-shelf past the Hope keeper to tie the game 1-1.
In the 69th minute, Capel scored what turned out to be the game winner. Sophomore Sydney Kinney placed a corner into the center of the box which was flicked on by senior Heidi Scholten to the feet of Capel. Trapping the ball, Capel slotted the ball near-post to give Calvin a 2-1 lead.
Despite a lot of pressure from Hope, Calvin held on for the win, with senior Ashton Hearn making four saves to earn the win in net.
Both teams totaled eight shots in the second half, with Hope holding an end-game edge of 11-10 in shots. Calvin held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
"My challenge to the upper class strikers (at halftime) was to go compete and decide how badly they wanted it," said head coach Mark Recker. "Kelly (Koets) came out big in the second half, breaking (the Hope defense) down. Paige (Capel) can do the left foot shot any time, she has that gift, and I just want her to do that more. I felt like we were good to go if we just pushed forward, got some energy and created opportunities - and that is what we did."
Calvin improves to 9-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the MIAA while Hope moves to 8-2-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play. The Knights now look forward to Tuesday when they host the Scots of Alma. Earlier this season, Calvin lost to Alma in its MIAA opener 3-2.

MEN'S SOCCER
Kalamazoo 3, Calvin 0
Kalamazoo surprised the host Knights in front of a large crowd at Zuidema Field as the Hornets defeated Calvin 3-0. The victory is Kalamazoo's first at Calvin since 2002.
Calvin (5-4-0 overall, 4-1-0 MIAA) also saw its five-game win streak come to an end.
The Knights outshot Kalamazoo 19-9 but the Hornets were opportunistic on offense and strong on defense. Kalamazoo grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first half as Noah Bushaw pounced on a loose ball near midfield, dribbled into the Calvin zone and launched a 25-yard rocket that knuckled just under the crossbar.
Calvin pressed for the tying goal in the second half but Kalamazoo struck again on a counterattack in the 57th minute as Werner Roennecke drilled a rebound shot from point-blank range into the net. The Hornets then scored an insurance goal with just over three minutes left in regulation.
Calvin's best scoring chance came in the 68th minute as junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) took a free kick just outside the Kalamazoo box and whistled a low hard shot that Kalamazoo goalkeeper Beau Prey was able to snag. Prey finished the game with seven saves. Kalamazoo's defense also cleared a ball off the line early in the first half after a shot got past Prey but was cleared by a Kalamazoo defender.
Despite the loss, Calvin remains in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as Olivet defeated Hope 2-1 in overtime, keeping Calvin three points ahead of a logjam of teams now tied for second place which includes Hope, Alma, Kalamazoo and Adrian.
Calvin will host Alma on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. match at Zuidema Field.
